An excellent victory today against what was the form team in the division. Good to see a large crowd and I even thought the ref had a good game. One for the archive guys but when did we last have a game with no bookings?

Don't know the answer to that off hand but the no bookings outcome is seismic in the context of these two clubs!  More Thistle players have been sent off against Airdrie than any other club Thistle have played (16). [Next nearest Falkirk and Morton with 15.] More Airdrie players have been sent off against Thistle than any other team Thistle have played (17). [Next nearest St Mirren 11.] Many of them will have been second yellows. Reports of these two clubs playing each other over the decades suggest it's hard to believe there were any matches where at least one player wasn't cautioned. They seem to bring out the worst in each other but in contrast, yesterday was played in a hard but fair spirit.

Massive game next week. Happy enough with the point and just keeping our nose ahead of Airdtie.

Looking locked in for a playoff place but I really want 3rd, for the extra prize money more than anything.

Anyone got a link to the Championship shares of the prize money this season? "Needle and haystack" springs to mind.

Jim we are trying to build up cash reserves of which we had none. We may have money but none available to spend.  Cash income isn’t steady over the season it’s front end loaded (Season tickets and sponsorship) and tail end loaded (prize money).

Our outgoings though are continual, and we can get unexpected hits to this via postponements due to weather etc, or game’s getting moved to Fridays to suit TV (which we get nothing extra for except less hospitality and less walk up fans especially away fans).

The building of reserves builds us a safety net for the peaks and troughs of income vs expenditure.

Interesting point about BBC TV coverage Norgethistle. Is it correct clubs don't get anything for being televised?  Seems strange any club would have agreed to that given that it only results in less income overall. Can clubs "refuse" to be selected?  BBC must be pleased with the outcome. There have been some decent matches this season - ironically including Thistle's.

  4. This is well past tedious.

Being swept along on the tide of so-called fan ownership doesn't mean an end to financial worries. They will always exist. Clubs at our level will always need investment from whatever source they can find in order to survive. Our club must be the only beneficiary of funding from a multi-millionaire but, in short time, have to rely on a random cup draw to be able to play the wages.

Business men have put £500k into the club. From all reports they would like to top that up to £1m yet here we are squabbling about if it should be allowed and why, who said (or didn't say) what, where, when etc.

Please find an alternative platform for all this stuff. First and foremost we're a football club and this is a football forum.

  5. Wouldn't disagree with any of that. The worry is surely that this was against a team that is demonstrably the worst in the Premiership by a mile and only 3 positions ahead of us in the mythical 42-club league. They've won twice in 25 matches, shipping 42 goals in that time. We are often told there's nothing much between the lower part of the premiership and the upper part of the Championship and "league expansion" gets an airing. Are they that much worse than the other 11? There must be some reason they are so easy to beat but Thistle never really looked like finding it.

We rarely beat teams above us in the cup, indeed cups going back to the 80s when we were largely a second tier team.

I still fondly remember the victory away at Love Street when we beat St Mirren 3 - 1. Apart from that, were Dundee a Premier league team when we beat them, to get to the cup semi-final?

I'd be surprised if we have beaten  a team higher up the leagues more than a handful of times since we became a team who spent as much time out of the top flight as in it.

However, on the face of it this should be a team we are looking to beat. The perennial question is how we do that? Doolan will have a gameplan and hopefully that works better than the our visit to Hearts in the summer.

If BBG is playing, he's fine with hold up play and flick ons but if left isolated doesn't have the pace to threaten the opposition defence. As in other games, this allows the opposition to commit another player forward. So another perennial problem, which Dools suffered from too, is finding a player or system to support him.

The players who experienced that collapse last June, will be looking to win and will need no motivation. Hopefully that spirit can see us through to the next round.

It won't make up for THAT day in Dingwall but may exorcise some ghosts for players and fans alike.

Also any funds from another game will not be budgeted for so will be useful on the financial side.

    TL:DR

Don't know if I could face ANOTHER penalty shootout up there so I'll go for a hard fought 2 - 1 win for the Jags over the Stags.

OLAS For we made a promise...

Statistically, you are correct Jagfox. Since joining the SFL in 1893/94 Thistle have beaten teams in a (then) higher division just 7 times.

     ·        1899/00 St Bernard’s (Div 1). Thistle in Div 2.

    ·        1982/83 Kilmarnock, eventually! (Prem Div). Thistle in 1st Division.

    ·        1988/89 St Mirren after a replay (Prem Div). Thistle in 1st Division.

    ·        1999/00 Livingston (Div 1). Thistle in 2nd Division.

    ·        2000/01 Dundee after a replay (Prem Div). Thistle in 1st Division.

    ·        2005/06 Inverness CT after a replay, ET and penalties (Prem Div). Thistle in 2nd Division.

    ·        2023/24 Ross County (premiership). Thistle in Championship.

Remember of course that between 1902/03 and 1969/70 Thistle spent 61 consecutive seasons in the top flight so beating a team in a higher league was impossible. Keep a look out for more on this in the Stats Watch in The Thistle Archive later today.

  7. When you've finished with hospitality and the toilets is there any spare cash left to upgrade the floodlights? They've deteriorated badly over the last few seasons. When I see Friday night matches on BBC I'm struck how much brighter other clubs' are.

Those new blazers for Maxwell and his pals don't pay for themselves you know

But Maxwell is SFA, not SPFL. Please don't tell me "the company" in these rules means the SFA. That would be even worse!

Having looked at the rulebook on the SPFL website:

    C26.1 After deduction and retention by the Home Club of 15% of the aggregate of all ticket receipts and admission charges (gross excluding VAT) received or receivable by the Home Club in relation to a Play-Off Match in the Premiership/Championship PlayOff Competition, a levy of 50% (plus VAT if applicable) of the balance, after such 15% deduction and retention, of the aggregate of all ticket receipts and admission charges (gross excluding VAT) received or receivable by the Home Club for or in relation to the relevant Play-Off Match shall be paid by that Home Club to the Company not later than seven days after the date on which such Play-Off Match is played;

Someone keep me right here but if I've understood this gibberish, (ignoring the VAT for the moment) for every £100 in receipts in ticket/gate receipts...

Take in £100.  £15 goes to club immediately. Leaves £85.  £42.50 goes to SPFL. Club retains remaining £42.50. Total club income from the match therefore £57.50. Is that correct?

In one sense a home play-off match is no different to a league match. The away team does not share the "gate". The SPFL do not  get a cut. (Do they? ) If so, then the obvious question is why the SPFL get their mitts on £42.50 of every £100 generated. Who voted for that nonsense?

  10. My favourite anecdote about "Big Tiny" was when Jimmy Johnstone thought Celtic should have had a penalty (the ball went out for a goal-kick). As they were walking back up towards the half-way line Johnstone says to Wharton "Haw Mr Wharton, that wis a penalty" to which the reply came "I think when you read your Sunday Post tomorrow Mr Johnstone, you'll find it wasn't".

  11. I was at that game but remain rather confused. Is it not the case that touching the ball is not enough? I thought the rule was the ball has to travel its own circumference to be deemed in play. If it didn't then the corner hadn't been taken and Craigen claiming it had been was wrong.

  12. In a previous spell at County he brought his team to Firhill and went 1-up. They got a free-kick just inside their own half  near the dugouts. The ref blew his whistle and the County player fired the ball up the park for a goal-kick. Just the stuff to bring back the fans.

  13. More questions than answers!

Is football about to be rid of yellow cards? If not, what sort of offence would merit a sin bin but not a yellow card? Some of the yellow cards that are issued are verging on the trivial as it is. Would a sin bin replace a yellow card for persistent fouling but not one specific foul? Can a player be sin-binned more than once in a match? Would a second sin bin mean a red and off? How would you sin bin a keeper? Sub keeper comes on for 10 minutes and then the sin binned keeper comes back on? Wouldn't be a player reduction punishment however so would a midfield player have to go into goals for the sin bin duration so that the team is reduced to 10?

I see the proposed colour of a sin bin card is orange. That will go down well in some quarters (not).

  14. Two observations.

With McMillan injured, Lawless has been far less effective. We've had 3 blank sheets out of the 4 games he's missed. Their combination play down the wing has reaped benefits with entertaining and effective cut-backs and goals from close in. That option has largely disappeared. It's a pity because it's not long since posts on here were suggesting Lawless was playing the best football in his time at Firhill. Speedy recovery by McMillian is needed to make the best of him.

Agree with earlier posts there was little pressure down the wings. Fitzpatrick on his game shows how dangerous he can be - even if spasmodically at times. (Again speedy recovery please.) That said however there have been several occasions where hasn't tracked back and left opposition players in lots of space and the right-hand side of the back four exposed. Count the goals we've lost at the back post this season.

  15. Geez Oh. Are there no depths our club will dive to to become a laughing stock? Are we seriously saying the Chairman's sacking was over flying a flag? Who is saying that? Where is the proof?

How many Thistle fans have ever noticed the flag polls? How many are there? What flags are flying on them?  Do they care? We play in a city where clubs have been closely associated with flags for decades - often with dubious connotations. We're supposed to be above all that. Does it really matter?
