  1. Staying with my " Glasgow aunt" in Shhakespeare Street aged 14 I was taken to Firhill on Christmas Day 1948. On the way along the canal bank the lads tspoke in glowing terms of their new winger. " Just wait till you see him!" And John Erchie did not let us down. The opponents were Morton, then a force in the land with three Scottish internationals, including Jimmy Cowan whose heroics at Wembley a few weeks later helped Scotland to gain a 3 -1 victory. In the second half John Erchie sped down the wing towards the Ruchill End and delivered whaat was then called a "daisy cutter" across the Morton penalty aea, where their finehalff back Billy Campbell desperately sliced the ball into his own net Thistle 1 Mrton0. Happy days, happy memories. Bi sinn gad ionndrain a Sheonaidh
  2. .... and all done with a team which was largely composed of part-time players. Changed days indeed.
  3. Don't get me started on the badge! When if first replaced the classy modern design I described it as having been produced by the infant department in a primary school. Sadly it looks like we're stuck with it for the foreseeable future . It displays a total lack of imagination.
  4. It would be disappointing if this were the case, They could certainly offer Scunthorpe more than we could dream of. Someone posted here that we had 'first option' on Taylor in the event that Scunny wished to release him. If so the ball is in our court whatever Celtic decide.
  5. Down 3-0 at half-time, Thistle scored early in the second half . I remember a thunder of stamping feet from the main stand as our supporters vainly tried to gee -up our boys. Prefer to remember the semi-final where we beat Celtic at Ibrox. Jags played most of the s econd half there with a badly injrued player hirpling on the wing - no substitutes then. Hearts at that time were an exceptional team so the defeat in the Final was no real surprise although we did not expect to lose quite so heavily. Astonishing to remember that tis was our third Final in 5 years. we old boys were spoiled indeed !
  6. " To be honest" ( Alan Mcinally- every second sentence - really grates ) Also from same source, crosses are always " whipped in".
  7. Fhearchar: Ged nach eil a'Ghadhlig agam cho math s bu coir dhi bhith, ,bhithinn deonach coinneachadh la air choiregin ri gaidheil eile a tha leantain a " Cluaran" Aig an aois a tha mi cha n'eil mi frithealadh a h uile geam mara bha mi aig aon am - aig an tigh 's falbh - ach ma bhios an aimsir freagarach bi mi ann gun teagamh.
  8. ..... or even 12 noon. See what mean?.
  9. Stick with the 24-hour clock? I've always found problems with noon and midnight ;which is a.m and which p.m?. Usually go for 2noon or 12 mid to avoid confusion.(mine!)
  10. When the badge was changed to the current puerile effort ( at some expense, I believe) I commented that it was obviously designed by a child in primary 3. I haven' t changed my opinion !
  11. In 1914 and 1915 the war was raging and there was obviously a greater sense of community around. I knew about the match on behalf of the building of an Orange Hall, but not about the one to raise funds for Catholic schools in Partick ( they had no access to public funds at that time). All in all a very interesting insight into social history. Not sure one can draw any conclusions from it relevant to 2014 though.
  12. Official site this morning says Ross Forbes has been released. A player I liked but maybe not sufficiently mobile for the top league. Archie, having released such a number is not messing about, and hopefully releasing resources for the signing of better replacements.
  13. Dundee v Elgin. Now there's a thing. O Maryhill is wonderful ?
