Far too sensible an idea to ever be adopted in Scotland. For me the best set up would be 2 leagues of 16 with 2 up 2 down & a playoff between 3rd top/3rd bottom. Below 'league 2' regionalise the leagues (as they do below the National League in England).  It makes no sense to me that Cove travel to Annan or Elgin City travel to Stranraer (and vice verca). There are enough teams in the central belt who can move between leagues if necessary. It's working in England and elsewhere in Europe regional leagues operate below the top divisions.

Teams in the top league will complain about losing fixtures but what they really want is the ugly sisters at home twice a season for the extra gate and TV money.

The extra games against Rangers and Celtic would go away if Doncaster and Co could negotiate deals that were anywhere near as equitable as their English counterparts. Prize money would probably be 4 or 5 times what it is now.

So it's debatable whether our playoff spot is now "secured" or otherwise,  but obviously we're nearly there, and third place over Airdrie is now the main question. That question is unlikely to be settled until the very last game.

I'm wondering what Kris Doolan should do now. Our squad is incredibly stretched, Brian Graham is playing every minute, some other key players not looking their sharpest.

The playoffs are obviously bruising and personally I don't think we're currently in shape to get through them. Though a late season drop off to 4th place would do nothing for morale.

    Would you:

    (a) Prioritise 3rd place and continue with the strongest 11 available through to the end of the regular season, or

    (b) Rotate the squad, even if it means trialling a few very inexperienced players, to give key players a chance to recover and focus on the playoffs?

I think I'd go for the second option. I might be tempted go full strength against Airdrie just to give us the best chance, but regardless of that result I think I'd use the last two games as a reset opportunity, and que sera on 3rd place. Appreciate the financial implications, but I think performance in the playoffs has to be the priority.

Do we have enough experienced fit players for option (b) ?

A bit like us last season

Actually, our form is a bit better this season compared to last, having picked up 10 points in this quarter as opposed to only 7 in 1st 5 games of the quarter(we then got 6 from the last 4) last season.

But if we had won instead of drawing, we would have been second instead of fourth

I understood.  Winning at Starks Park isn’t exactly an easy thing for us though, is it ? If we had won, would people have been saying we gained £160K ? I don’t think so.

I am presuming that it will be the same team as last week. The only debate would seem to be as to whether Stanway retains his place or McInroy comes back in. For all sorts of reasons my preference would be for Stanway. He was a little rusty in the early part of last week’s match, but came on to a good game after that, and I think that it would be beneficial to maintain that momentum. At least McInroy should be able to make a more positive impact off the bench than Alston managed.

Muirhead came across well on the podcast, but is clearly carrying an injury, and one wonders how long that can continue. It would be helpful if O’Reilly and Williams could come back into the picture sooner rather than later.

Agree with you about Stanway. He seems to be pretty consistent once he has his confidence. McInroy less so

There’s been a huge change in dynamics which was badly required as we were all over the place defensively. It was entertaining but the Ayr game ended that style of play. We were clearly the more talented team but we lost 4 goals to a poor side.

I give Doolan some credit although the rearrangement has raised new problems. Neilson looks out of place. Jack and Harry appear more reticent to bomb forward. The wingers are missing their support.

If Robinson or Graham get injured we’re in trouble because they’ve both excelled since the changes. Perhaps this will eventually remove some pressure from Fitzy who doesn’t need to do it all himself. But he needs to lose weight and get fitter in body and mind.  And maybe even enjoy himself.

Regarding McMillan and Milne, I think Jack is feeling the effects of not having had a pre season. He really looks done. I also think Milne has been given instructions to be more defensive. Maybe, when/if we secure our playoff place we will revert to our more attack minded style.

Question: Is like for like replacements what we want when one or more subs is required? If so, then the implication seems to be that no changes in approach are to be expected, just more of the same, with slightly fresher legs. Doesn't that usually fail (at least for us), and lead to more criticisms of the manager? On many occasions (usually those where subs have failed to make any real impression, or they've come on ridiculously late) supporters have lambasted the manager for just continuing to plough the same unproductive furrow, having simply replaced one ox with another (my own simile!).

Of course there are also cases where changing the entire balance and solidity of the team due to substitutions has also resulted in catastrophe (look no further than Thistle).

I guess the question is: Is it better to try new things with subs, or to stick with the same approach, hoping for fresh legs and new motivation leading to a positive outcome? Actually, I'm sure there are examples of failures and successes for both.

If the replacements were of the same standard as the starters I think the subs would be effective more often. I think your 2nd point about changing shape also comes down to the quality/ability of the players.

Couldn’t believe the Stanway substitution, he was playing well at that stage

Incredible change in Stanway yesterday after he setup the goal with his shot from 25 yards. Up to that point, he had been as poor as the 1st game vs Arbroath. Maybe he is a confidence player but the positive is that one bit of good play changes his mindset.

  9. We were poor yesterday. I am inclined to cut them a bit of slack. For the past 5 or 6 games we have had 5 or 6 injuries and yesterday there were at least 7 players out - that’s 1/3 of the squad. Fitzpatrick is getting a lot of stick here, but he at least created a couple of chances. Stevie did nothing. But again I am not surprised because McMillan looks like he is running on fumes. Big problem for us if we have suspensions on top of the injuries. Plus the pitch is a mess. That needs sorted. How much is a hybrid pitch ?

They announced the crowd as 2085..540Thistle fan's..

Just following up on this. I have now seen it in 3 places as 1048 which I am sure is wrong. Really a question for the archivists. Is there somewhere that “official” attendances are logged ?

  11. At this stage of the season to keep our playoff place we need to match 5th place - at the moment Morton. If we want to keep 3rd spot we need to match Airdrie - obviously not playing but would be Raith who they have the upper hand on. So, I would say that a win is probably needed.

Does also that mean Neilson available? If not I'd reluctantly put McBeth back into midfield. Really having Luke playing alongside Aero in defence could be the way to go on the longer run.

Neilson didn’t play last night and the U21s don’t have another game this window, I don’t think. Don’t think I would put McBeth back in midfield as I feel the team just didn’t work with him there.
