I think I want Dunfermline to win today, will give us a better shot at 3rd. Also good to have Airdrie lose momentum. Although as long as we pick up the points, doesn’t really matter.

I was  thinking a draw would be the best result. Usually is in  these situations.

  2. In the 1st minute one of our players completely took a Dunfermline player out. The ref didn't think it was a foul. From that moment on I knew we were in for 90 mins of terrible refereeing, and it came to pass.

More concerning is our continuing attempts to protect a lead. Why does everyone drop so deep? Why do completely lose the ability to play football? We played some decent stuff 1st half; 2nd half was all panicked clearances, often when there was a straightforward pass to a Thistle jersey.

Whatever the merits of the penalty, we allowed a Dunfermline player to run from almost the halfway line unchallenged to play the ball into the box. Robinson actually moves away to give the guy a free run up the park. If we insist on defending a lead, we need to learn to defend every inch of the park.

Hope the injury to Lawless is as bad as it looked.  Fingers crossed he's available for the playoffs. The main positive was that we deserved the draw from our 1st half performance and it inches us a little closer to said playoffs.

Tonight's game was a strong argument for VAR. In fairness, I was sure Graham was offside but the linesman didn't flag - did the ref convince him he should have?

We played well enough in the first half against a poor Dunfermline side but I still had the feeling that we might lose a game we should win comfortably. Without Lawless, we had nothing to offer on the right flank and again we lost soft goals - that's nine in the last 3 games. The substitutions had the look of frantic panic and once more our lack of fitness was an issue.

It was worth giving Stewart a start since we already know that Sneddon & Mitchell are no better than ok - I don't think he's an upgrade.  Muirhead made a bad misjudgement for their second goal - Neilson looks a classy player at times but he was poor at their third goal to add to his two errors for Livingston goals. Do we need a defensive coach?

Last season we had Tiffoney or Turner in the free role behind Graham - they both carried a threat and kept defenders occupied - McInroy doesn't really and Alston even less - I think that's part of the reason our midfield gets over-run and we lose so many goals.

When we had a full fit squad last season, we were the best team in the Division and showed that in the play-off games. There have been very few times this season when I've thought we were significantly better than the opposition. I'm not confident we're good enough to get through the play-offs...if we make them.

As seen on TV. Graham was about a yard onside. First disallowed goal was also onside, although that was a very tight decision. Dunfermline's 2nd was also onside.

  4. For me the worst goal was their 1st. Regardless of the goalies inability to push the ball away from goal, the rest of the team were culpable. We had effectively cleared the ball, the Dunfermline defender wasn't that far the  halfway line. Lawless, who had sclaffed the ball upfield to him, for some reason ran away from the advancing player.  Not a single other player in our team had the gumption to get out and engage with him. Absolutely shocking standard of defending.

The ref wasn't the problem. Conspiracy theories just cloud the actual issues.

You're probably correct and he  certainly isn't responsible for our obsession with protecting a lead very badly. We were so much in control in the first half hour it was criminal not to press home our advantage. If I'm honest our 2nd goal was so much against the run of play, I didn't feel we were secure when it was scored.

It doesn't change the fact that their 1st goal came from an absolute joke of corner. It so blatantly deflected off the Livi player it beggered belief. He is a liability of a referee, never seen him give anything other than a car crash of a performance. Think my favourite today was when  Muirhead got halfed in two right in front of him and he still didn't detect a foul.

Having said that Livi kept going when we were in cruise control, for that alone they deserved to win.

  6. I've seen a hell of a lot of bad refereeing recently but not sure if I've ever seen a ref completely lose the plot as much as that. In mitigation, it was a difficult game to ref, scrappy and ill tempered.

Poor performance saved by a brilliant goal.

Fitzy deservedly MotM but Bannigan ran him close

Possibly those two were standouts but the biggest plus point was that almost everyone pulled their weight today. First half was pretty even but Arbroath were taken apart 2nd half.  So good to see Thistle keep going for more when on top.  Could have easily been 6 by end.

It’s fine so long as we get the desired result, which we have done when leading for most of that 18 months (including last weekend!). I was in the JLS last weekend and never really felt we were in danger of conceding. It’s very possible that we might have lost more points being “more positive” against teams putting everything into equalising in those last few minutes every time we’ve had to defend a narrow lead.

Well you're obviously OK with the tactics we employ when we try to defend a lead. Fair enough.

Personally I see the gilt edged chance Airdrie missed at the death last week to take a deserved point. That and the 13 points lost from winning positions this season.

It was indeed a problem in our premiership era. Of course it was. I don’t agree it’s been a significant problem since then. Obviously we’re going to concede late goals when defending a lead sometimes. Every team does. That is entirely natural when the normal dynamic is one team throwing their everything at the other. It’s when it happens an unnatural amount of times that it becomes an issue.

I’ve looked through all last season’s results and this season’s to date, and there are very few which have ended by us losing points in the last 5 minutes and not many points lost from winning positions. Our record from winning positions in the past 18 months or so is in fact excellent.

I suspect you might still be unduly traumatised from the premiership years,

No it's mostly about the entire team dropping back to the 18 yard line en masse, mainly since we were relegated from the premiership. I've lost count of the number of times I've been part of the Jackie Husband stand all urging our team to get up the park. At least keep your shape.

I’ve never understood this sort of post personally. Raith have excelled all season in snatching wins at the death. Meanwhile we’ve not lost much late on this season, except to Raith. Maybe Raith are just better than us this year?

It's been a recurring theme for years and years. Off the top of my head from last season Dundee and Cove. It was the same last week when we were hanging on for grim death.

Defending a lead isn't necessarily a bad thing if you actually know what you're doing. Problem is we are absolutely shit at it. We completely lose our shape and drop deeper and deeper. Watch Raith's equaliser, a complete replay of the two late goals at Firhill, pass the ball past the statues and you've scored.

About the only respite in recent years was the end of last season and the playoffs where when we were on top we kept going for the jugular.

It's not so much that we got beat tonight, Raith were the better team, but when we went ahead they were on the ropes until we decided to see it out. Normal service has been resumed.

  11. Brian Graham really needs to get a grip of himself. What a way for a grown man to act. You'd think at his age he'd be able to take a bit of baiting from opposition fans.

His behaviour and an absolute car crash of a refereeing performance really took the shine off the game for me.

Edit, perhaps elevenone's post gives a bit of context. If true that's truly disgusting but not particularly surprising from Morton.

Maybe been mentioned but I'm kinda sure Jamie got a touch on a ball in the first half (dive to his right). Mr Collum signalled a goal kick. Sneddon looked just a tad miffed his save hadn't been recognised. Anyone clear that one up?

eta 49 secs on above video

It was a clear save by Sneddon. How Collum missed it only he knows and he didn't get any help from his linesman who was well placed. Replay showed it was probably going wide.
