:detective: 09.08.2016 Dundee United 3 Partick Thistle 1 (League Cup 2nd Round)

  • Sean Welsh maintains his 100% spot-kick record - now 4/4, all in competitive action. Only 6 players with a 100% competitive record are believed to have ventured beyond this point: Davie Mathers (5); Norman McCreadie (5); Bill Shankly (6); Gary Harkins (6); Ronnie Glavin (7); Jered Stirling (13).
  • Sean becomes the 6th member of the current squad to take his goals tally into double figures in competitive action for Thistle. He joins Stuart Bannigan (10); Christie Elliott (14); Steven Lawless (29); Chris Erskine (40) and Kris Doolan (90).
  • 5 Thistle players pick up yellow cards, for only the second time this decade. To find a higher yellow card count you have to rewind back to August 2003, when 6 Jags incurred the wrath of John Rowbotham in a 2-2 draw in the SPL at Fir Park.
  • The goals-against per-game ratios of the current Thistle goalies in competitive action are incredibly wide-ranging and read: David Crawford (0.67), Tomáš Cerný (1.00) and Ryan Scully (1.74).
  • Thistle's 39-year-old horror-sequence of Cup defeats vs. Dundee United now stands at 12 consecutive losses. The run is second only to 13 consecutive Cup defeats to Rangers, set between 1936 and 1949.
  • For only the second time in the club's history, lower League opponents remove Thistle from the knockout stage of the League Cup in two consecutive seasons.

ongoing sequences and goals tables:

  • 11 consecutive competitive games with a Thistle goal. (Longest run since: 12 games; 26th Mar 2014 to 26th Aug 2014. Club-record: 36 games; 11th Jan 1896 to 4th Sep 1897.)
  • 44 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 46 games; 5th Dec 1914 to 24th Mar 1917. Club-record: 62 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914. *)
  • 46 consecutive competitive appearances for Steven Lawless, 9th Aug 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Callum Booth - 46 games; 14th Mar 2015 to 9th Apr 2016. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)

* These streaks are perceived and not categoric, and should therefore be considered with some degree of caution. In their favour, two independent researchers have looked carefully at press reports which cover virtually all of the matches from the time. It's entirely possible, however, that penalties may have went unreported or, indeed, are noted in alternative press reports which have not yet come to the attention of the researchers.

:detective: 20.08.2016 Aberdeen 2 Partick Thistle 1 (SPFL Premiership - game 2)

  • Sean Welsh's red card for dissent underlines just how poor Thistle's discipline record has been in recent seasons. In the first season of the Premiership, Thistle won 16 of the 38 "discipline battles" (42.1%). Since then, we've only won 16 of the next 78 (20.5%).
  • Kris Doolan registers only his third-ever Premiership assist. He now has 36 games in which to register a new personal-best of two in one season!
  • Kris Doolan's assist for Chris Erskine marks a rare instance of such a collaboration between introduced subs. There have only been 2 other occurences since I began keeping assist records in 2013-14; Gary Fraser assisted Steven Lawless in the 3-1 friendly win over Sunderland XI in August, 2014 and Kris Doolan assisted Steven Lawless in the 3-1 League Cup win over Cowdenbeath in August, 2013.
  • Erskine's fabulous strike breaks a run of almost 10 competitive hours without a Thistle goal at Pittodrie. He's the first Jag to score up there since Jamie Mitchell netted the equaliser in a 2-1 defeat back in September 2003.
  • Thistle are now 8 competitive games without a win at Pittodrie. In fact, Lambie's back-2-back wins in 2002-03 were the only 2 victories in our last 28 visits.
  • After 7 games, Thistle have yet to draw a competitive match this season.

ongoing sequences and goals tables:

  • 7 competitive games without a draw. (Longest run since: 9 games; 2nd Feb 2016 to 19th Mar 2016. Club-record: 27 games; 18th Feb 1899 to 23rd Dec 1899.)
  • 12 consecutive competitive games with a Thistle goal. (Longest run since: 12 games; 26th Mar 2014 to 26th Aug 2014. Club-record: 36 games; 11th Jan 1896 to 4th Sep 1897.)
  • 45 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 46 games; 5th Dec 1914 to 24th Mar 1917. Club-record: 62 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914. *)
  • 47 consecutive competitive appearances for Steven Lawless, 9th Aug 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Aaron Taylor-Sinclair - 56 games; 27th Oct 2012 to 18th Jan 2014. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)

:detective: 27.08.2016 Partick Thistle 1 Heart of Midlothian 2 (SPFL Premiership - game 3)

  • The Jagzone is launched and for the first time fans outside of the UK and Ireland can pay to view the live action from Firhill, with multi HD camera angles and two match commentators. Fancy!
  • With Sean Welsh's absence due to suspension, Callum Booth and Ziggy Gordon are the last men standing with maximum competitive game-time (720 minutes) in 2016-17.
  • Chris Erskine's assist puts him way out in front in our competitive Goals/Assists combi-table for 2016-17. With 6 in 7 appearances, his tally is now twice his nearest rivals. In the "all games" category he is now into double figures for the season (8 goals + 2 assists) - not too shabby by the end of August!
  • Liam Lindsay registers his third competitive goal for the Jags. All headers, he started with a 5-yarder at Dens in Nov '15, progressed to a 6-yarder vs QP 4 weeks ago, and now a 7-yarder vs Hearts.
  • Thistle have scored in 13 consecutive competitive games; the club's longest run in more than 10 years. You need to rewind back 42 years to find a longer streak wholly recorded whilst a top-flight club; McParland and Auld shared a run of 19-in-a-row in 1974.
  • Thistle remain unbeaten in second-half competitive action this season.
  • With this defeat, Thistle have lost 3 consecutive home League matches to Hearts, an unprecedented occurrence

ongoing sequences and goals tables:

  • 8 competitive games without a draw. (Longest run since: 9 games; 2nd Feb 2016 to 19th Mar 2016. Club-record: 27 games; 18th Feb 1899 to 23rd Dec 1899.)
  • 13 consecutive competitive games with a Thistle goal. (Longest run since: 14 games; 31st Dec 2005 to 14th Mar 2006. Club-record: 36 games; 11th Jan 1896 to 4th Sep 1897.)
  • 45 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 46 games; 5th Dec 1914 to 24th Mar 1917. Club-record: 62 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914. *)
  • 48 consecutive competitive appearances for Steven Lawless, 9th Aug 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Aaron Taylor-Sinclair - 56 games; 27th Oct 2012 to 18th Jan 2014. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)

Alf, you're not para, we really do take a regular beating in the Premiership discipline stakes these days, although the Cups have been eachy-peachy.

In the table below Thistle's figures appear on the left column every time, opponents always to the right.

As you can see, our pens (marked with a tick for a converted and a cross for unconverted) and reds are especially poor, and we usually lose out on yellows too.

My arbitrary system counts 1pt for a yellow, 4pts for a red and 5pts for a penalty with the "discipline match" results colour coded light green for a "win", light grey for a "draw" and light red for a "defeat".

As I said, the Cups have been eachy-peachy. The summary below throws up an interesting find; our Premiership discipline record has went to pot after a strong first season back. The more you defensive you are, the more pressure you're under?

I suppose it's logical that the worse you play in relation to the rest of the league you are far more likely to concede a penalty. The more penalties you give away will likely increase the number of red cards. Cup games have usually the same level of pressure on both sides so maybe that's why the card divi out is more equal?

Where we might have to haud the paranoia result is regarding yellow cards. Just an impression and maybe someone can prove me wrong but Bannigan took over the Paton crown for needless/very avoidable bookings (petulance etc) especially earlier in our return to the top league. Also feel as a team we've often picked up cards late in a game that's clearly won or lost (again kinda needless). Think more recently the daft bookings are less often (Welsh's daftness at Aberdeen was more of an usual occurrence for both player and team).

I still believe we should be more than a tad paranoid. I do sense our penalty record is as much down to other teams being more proficient at conning the ref than blatant fouling on our part. I wonder also if our record for picking up the first caution in a match is disproportionate. If it is I'm sure that's an indication of something or other but I'm not too sure what. :)

lib,

Re your last couple of posts... Callum's 45 minutes at Cappielow was the sum total of the two who've combined 1440 competitive minutes not-out thus far, quirky indeed. Unfortunately I'm not recording yellow timings, much as I'd love to know the answer to your pondering!

In other news...

From what I can gather from previous posts in the last couple of seasons there are a number of you who keep your own records for our games.

You might be interested to note that I have settled on Danny Devine o.g. for Queen of the South's recent Firhill goal.

There is an excellent behind the goals angle on QOTSTV which reveals the truth; Ziggy's left boot is making a clearance, Danny's right boot redirects it into the net. Ziggy then gives Danny the stare.

This goal was particularly nasty for stattos. QOS give it to their own Dale Hilson (as does the match referee), Thistle give it to Ziggy Gordon, whilst the SPFL website reckons it was Liam Lindsay.

Truth > Referee. Right?

:detective: 10.09.2016 Partick Thistle 0 St Johnstone 2 (SPFL Premiership - game 4)

  • Our new signing from Portsmouth, Adam Barton, becomes the 24th player to be listed on a competitive team-sheet for 2016-17, but doesn't make his debut.
  • Ryan Scully comes on as a substitute 'keeper for the third time in competitive action for Thistle, thereby matching the existing club-record which had solely been held by Paul Gallacher.
  • Thistle lose both halves of a competitive match for the first time since April.
  • Thistle lose their 4th consecutive competitive match and consequently slump to the bottom of the League. Co-incidentally, the last time we lost 4-in-a-row was last September (the run went on to 6), and that also resulted in our hitting the bottom spot.
  • Kris Doolan has now played 8 consecutive competitive games without scoring - especially remarkable in that it comes on the back of his personal-best run of scoring in 6 consecutive competitive games. The longest barren spell of his 8-season Thistle career is 14 competitive appearances without a goal, set in 2013-14.

ongoing sequences and goals tables:

  • 9 competitive games without a draw. (Longest run since: 9 games; 2nd Feb 2016 to 19th Mar 2016. Club-record: 27 games; 18th Feb 1899 to 23rd Dec 1899.)
  • 45 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 46 games; 5th Dec 1914 to 24th Mar 1917. Club-record: 62 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914. *)
  • 49 consecutive competitive appearances for Steven Lawless, 9th Aug 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Aaron Taylor-Sinclair - 56 games; 27th Oct 2012 to 18th Jan 2014. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)

Here's one from social media:

Has Kris Doolan ever received a red card?

I have a very foggy memory of him getting a second booking once but I cannot find any record of it in old discipline charts.

If he's never been sent off it wouldn't be surprising though. He is one of the most "well-behaved" footballers we've had.

WJ, your mind's playing tricks on you...

... the number nine is now in his 9th season as a Jag, and his crime count amounts to just 6 yellows, the most memorable of which was for cuddling Thistle fans after a 121st minute equaliser at Almondvale.

After today, the Red Card count for current Jags reads:

3 - Stuart Bannigan

2 - Abdul Osman

2 - Liam Lindsay

2 - Sean Welsh

1 - Ryan Scully

6 yellows in 9 seasons?? That's a stat and a half in this day and age.

Dools' elevation to sainthood has just gone up a notch - just 9 more goals to go!

A winner against the south side infant to confirm sainthood would do nicely.

:detective: An update for Sep / Oct... vorsprung durch technik.

vs Killie

  • With the inclusion of Thorsten Stuckmann, Germany became the 40th known country to be represented on a Thistle first-team teamsheet.
  • Steven Lawless marked his 50th consecutive competitive appearance with his 30th competitive goal for the club
  • Kilmarnock's Ivorian centre-forward, Souleymane Coulibaly, registered the 9,000th competitive goal against Partick Thistle.
  • In time added-on, Kris Doolan became the first Thistle player in history to be substituted 100 times in competitive action.

vs Well

  • With Callum Booth's non-selection, Ziggy Gordon was left as the last-man standing with maximum competitive game-time for the season.
  • With his 31st League goal for Thistle, Chris Erskine entered the Top 50 in our All-Time League goal-scorers chart.

vs the bigots

  • Thistle played their 5,500th competitive fixture.
  • The injured Kris Doolan failed to make a competitive appearance for the first time in almost a year, ending a run of 38 games not-out. The last match he missed was the 4-0 home defeat to Hearts on 31 October 2015.
  • Thistle have now played 23 competitive games without a win versus Rangers, currently our longest winless streak against any SPFL side.
  • We’ve now played 47 consecutive away League games without a penalty award, a streak which is now second only to the club-record run of 62 games set between 1911 to 1914.

vs Accies

  • Will be our 2,000th home League game.
  • Will be our 2,500th game at Firhill.

vs County

  • Will be our 4,000th League match.

vs Dundee

  • Will be our 2,000th away League match.

^ With this surreal 4-in-a-row run of landmarks, October could be just the month for milestone man to strike; I’m backing Doolan to open his League account and move closer to the big 100.

I hear you Barney, but…

:excl: Shan patter alert

As often happens, doin’ the Stats to reference quality requires black and white rules and, as much as I’m loathe to give any favour to the bigots of Backwardsville, they win this battle – from the point of view of the Statto, at least.

Whilst I appreciate and enjoy the fact that Rangers 1872 and Rangers 2012 are different legal entities, it’s my considered position that all clubs are institutions which exist, almost spiritually, as a direct consequence of the emotional investment of its supporters. There is zero doubt that this is the case for the loathsome hordes which followed old Rangers in 2011 and continued to follow new Rangers in 2013. We can still see them, hear them and smell them. They are, quite clearly, still Rangers. Whilst there’s a logical argument that says we should divide all club histories into legal entities, frankly, this would serve no practical purpose in terms of the Stats, and would distort various stories left, right and centre. Better, therefore, to treat all clubs as single “spiritual” entities, consistency being the deciding factor for me. Clyde, for example, were bankrupted in the late 19th century and no one in the sporting world batted an eyelid when they set up a new company and continued as normal. It’s also my position that Airdrieonians and Airdrie United should be treated as one and the same. In my opinion, our old Premier League opponents, Clydebank, are currently alive and well in the Juniors. If they rose through the ranks and we played them again I would join their two legal entities under the same H2H. The same goes for Gretna and Gretna 2008.

That said, if A.N. Other wishes to maintain that was our first-ever game vs Rangers then I would not contradict them... the point is not invalid.

ptd,

 How do you even think up these things???

Amazingly, that was a first in competitive action (although a small percentage of teamsheets remain unknown)

Amazing stuff TJR, as you bridge 133 years of history.

If I can further crave your indulgence, in our last 2 games, we have started with 5 players with surnames which begin with vowels.

Against Motherwell we had the aforementioned 3Es plus Azeez & Amoo. Against Rangers, Osman came in, but Elliot dropped out.

Is this a record? Have we ever fielded a majority of payers with surnames beginning with a vowel?

Maybe we should not be surprised, when our manager is Alan Archibald

Glasgow Thistle, along with Northern, were one of only two sides with whom we shared our first three League campaigns (2 Alliance, 1 SFL). Neither made it to our 1894-95 campaign; Northern failed the election process and would be wound up a few years later, and Thistle were out of business within weeks of seasons' end.

I'd recommend that all Jags fans read Niall Kennedy's early years season-by-season story like a book, maybe taking a season at a time. It's fascinating stuff - the insight is terrific and you'll get a flavour of all sorts of activity from the 19th century.

http://ptearlyyears.net/

Here's an excerpt from 1893-94 (Glasgow Thistle's last season):

"Glasgow Thistle were struggling – off the pitch they were financially embarrassed, and as an effect were having problems fielding teams. Partick Thistle visited Braehead and found the place in disrepair. A poor crowd attended the game, which saw Partick Thistle fans unkindly shout that the club should “pawn the park”. Freebairn scored another three goals, Harvey also netted, but Partick Thistle thought they should have scored better in a game which finished in a 4-3 win."

  • Sean Welsh maintains his 100% spot-kick record - now 5/5, all in competitive action. Only 4 players with a 100% competitive record are believed to have ventured beyond this point: Bill Shankly (6); Gary Harkins (6); Ronnie Glavin (7); Jered Stirling (13).
  • Kris Doolan comes off after 85 minutes, becoming the first Thistle player in history to be involved in 200 competitive substitutions.

DOUBLE-WHAMMY FOR ADE AZEEZ

  • Thistle start with the same eleven who played Ross County 4 days earlier, breaking an 8 month run of 27 consecutive competitive games with ever-changing line-ups.
  • Thistle play their 2,000th away League fixture, becoming the 8th Scottish club to reach this milestone, just 4 days after Hibernian.
  • Ade Azeez gets the assist/goal double-whammy, the first Thistle player to do so in the League this season.
  • Kris Doolan breaks the second-longest drought of his Thistle career, ending a run of 12 competitive appearances without a goal.
  • Thorsten Stuckmann replaces the injured Ryan Scully near the end, and Germany duly becomes the 40th known country to be represented on the Thistle appearances list, which now reads: Albania, Angola, Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Gibraltar, Guadeloupe, Guinea, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, Mexico, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the Czech Republic, the D.R. Congo, the Netherlands, the USA, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, Wales & Zambia.
  • At 6' 6, Thorsten is the tallest Jag in the great Jaggy database, ahead of almost 700 others who have a height quoted. He looks down on Glenn Daniels and Declan Gallagher, both of whom were listed as 6' 5.
  • Thistle secure their first away clean-sheet in the League in almost 6 months.

29.10.2016 St Johnstone [a] W2-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 11)

HISTORY MADE IN PERTH

  • Kris Doolan's first-half goal means that, for the first time in the SPFL era, Thistle have netted in 4-consecutive first-halves.
  • Kris moves on to 83 League goals - only 8 short of the required total to overtake Willie Sharp's record tally of 90. Should Kris's next 8 goals all come in the League, then his 100th competitive goal will be the one which sees him become #1 in our all-time League goalscorers chart.
  • Archie's Jags are the first Thistle side in history to win 3-in-a-row away to St Johnstone.
  • It's only the second time this century that Thistle have won back-to-back Top-Flight away games, both times under Alan Archibald. Willie Thornton's Jags were the last to go beyond this point, winning 4-in-a-row between October and December '67. The club-record is 5-in-a-row set in 1932 and equalled in 1959 and 1962.
  • 2 Top-Flight away wins in the space of 4 days is unusual, but it's not a record. We once won 2 in the space of 3 days back in March '58; a 3-1 win at Palmerston on the Saturday being followed by a 2-1 win at Brockville on the Monday!

04.11.2016 Aberdeen [h] L1-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 12)

DÉJÀ VU vs DONS

  • Prior to the match, Ryan Edwards - one of only two ever-presents this term - won the McCrea Financial Services player-of-the-month for the second-time-in-a-row. He's the first player to do so since Kallum Higginbotham, who won three-in-a-row between February and April 2014.
  • Once again Thistle shoot towards the North Stand in the first-half; it's now more than one-year since we did the opposite.
  • Adam Barton gets his first goal for Thistle, bringing the season-spread for the category up to an impressive 11 players in all competitions.
  • Thistle have lost their last 3 matches vs Aberdeen by the same 1-2 scoreline.

19.11.2016 Motherwell [a] L0-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 13)

FIR PARK HOODOO CONTINUES

  • Chris Erskine registers his 200th competitive appearance in Thistle colours.
  • In nearly 14 years, there have only been 2 occasions when the opposition haven't utilised a substitute versus Thistle; Mark McGhee's Motherwell done it in February of this year and did so again in this match. His side registered 2 goal winning margins on both occasions.
  • Thistle are now 12 competitive games without a win at Fir Park, 10th August 2002 to date, a new H2H record.
  • We have now played 50 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date, our second longest run in history.

26.11.2016 Rangers [h] L1-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 14)

DOOLAN ON THE VERGE OF HISTORY

  • Thistle start with the oldest eleven of all their games this season, clocking in at an average age of 27y, 2m, 11d.
  • Liam Lindsay matches his personal best run of 13 consecutive competitive appearances as a Jag.
  • Thistle retire with a 0-0 HT for the first time in the League this season, ending a run of 16 competitive games without such an occurrence.
  • Kris Doolan registers his 99th goal in all games for Partick Thistle and is on the verge of becoming the 12th Thistle superstar to hit the 100 mark.
  • Thistle hit the bottom of the Premiership for the third time this season - our stay there lasted just one game on each of the last two occasions.
