Don't fancy a draw. The shoot out will keep me out the pub.

Expect it to be an even game. Ayr are possibly ahead of us in preparation but we've home advantage.

In the event of a draw, you should just go to the pub. The shoot out will be low tension. I am sure that 10 points (ie no shoot out bonus) would easily put us in the top 4 runners up (as it did last year), so we would still qualify for the last 16. The only difference might be to our seeding, but I do not think that being seeded or not will avoid the inevitable away tie against a boring Premier League team.

Are you just trying to break it gently to me that we'll be visiting Livingston whatever the result? :)

We might be in a West Germany v. Austria situation where a draw suits both and penalties become irrelevant. We will not be seeded for the next round as that would require 3 teams who finished above us last season to be eliminated and - tbh - I doubt that is a realistic scenario - we will get St Johnstone or Motherwell away if we get through - elimination by boredom

If we win on Saturday we will be seeded, the format is as follows:

Knock-out rounds
The eight group winners and four best runners-up progress to the second round, where they are joined by the four clubs competing in Europe - Celtic, Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibernian.

The seeded teams in the last 16 are the four European clubs and the four group winners with the highest points totals.

If we fail to gain one point on Saturday, qualification is dependent on two of the following scenarios coming true at the weekend.

Hearts get less than 3 points

Dundee get less than 3 points

Livingston 0 points or Airdrie less than 3

Motherwell less than 2 points

Kilmarnock less than 2 points or St Mirren less than 3

Watched Archie's pre-game interview just now and mentions Bannigan knocked the knee he had the bad injury on but has been down to London to see a specialist and it looks like he didn't damage the repair that was done previously and should be back in training soon.  Has missed out on competitive games though but as he did the pre-season training shouldn't be too long coming back.

Erskine could be available again, Storer less sure but maybe.   Lennox got a bad one and may be out for 9-10 weeks.

In the interview with new signing Melbourne he did mention he could play left in a back three but you're probably right DB as Penrice (whose also played in a back three) is more likely as he's played more with the other defenders.  Or maybe Keown will make an appearance in a back three.  Whether he leaves or not he is still on our books and will be happy to get game time.

The result, imho will give zero indication to what lies ahead for us in the season to come. We've shown much more fight in the games so far than last season so far which is heartening. That said i just can't get excoted about this tournament no matter how hard i try. Was nice going to stenny and albion just for something different but i just don't get this set up. Perhaps i'm a thikko, it's not that i don't understand the format i just don't get it..............

Consider the groups as being a replacement for the traditional pre-season friendlies, and the competition really starting with the last 16.

I would expect this match to be played like a league match so it will tell us a good bit.
Must be said though Ayr are ahead of us in their preparations. We are still a minimum of 3 players short of the squad we need(could be 5).

Can't Ayr playing an open match - they will try and frustrate and hope they can nick it.

Edited to add most Ayr fans seem to think they are going to win easy. Let's hope we bring them back to reality!

:detective:

  • Thistle would match their H2H club-record (set in 1934 and matched in 1997) with a 5th straight home win over the Honest Men.

06.08.2013 Ayr United [h] W2-1 (League Cup 1st Round)
21.02.2012 Ayr United [h] W4-2 (SFL First Division - game 23)
17.09.2011 Ayr United [h] W4-0 (SFL First Division - game 6)
04.09.2010 Ayr United [h] W2-1 (Challenge Cup Quarter Final)

In other news, absolutely no way could a different teenager could score for a third consecutive match. Over to you Andy McCarthy or Callum Wilson...

Like it's 2017 all over again.

I believe Elliot is suspended for the first league game so I imagine it will be some sort of 352 with Spittal and maybe Melbourne as wing backs tomorrow.

With the league the week after I think Elliott will continue at right back. No point of giving Ayr a preview of how we will line-up against them in the away game, imo.
