In response to an excellent question on Pie & Bovril, we looked back at when Thistle were last at the outright summit of Scottish Fitba'. We did, of course, get joint-top as recently as August 2013 with a draw vs. Dundee United as we were the only game on the opening Friday night!

Interestingly, we shot to the joint-top on our First Division debut, 4 Sep 1897, courtesy of a 3-2 win versus the Scottish champions, Hearts. There was no separation criteria beyond points in those days. Going by the call of midnight on our matchdays, the deepest point date-wise was 22 November 1947 when a last-minute winner vs. Third Lanark at Hampden (of all places!) did the needful. Game wise, the deepest point occurs on match day 15 on 15 November 1930, after a 2-1 Firhill win over St Mirren (per table below). Jags were last outright top on 9 Aug 1980, another 3-2 win over Hearts on the league season opener. Click any of the links to explore more.

This may be shifting the goalposts slightly, but were we sole top of the real time Premier League table at a point in the second half of our third league game in 2013-2014? As you say we began with a draw v Dundee Utd. We then beat Ross County away to get to 4 points. Our third match was a midweek game v Hearts. Were we playing ahead of the other games? We took the lead to reach a real time 7 points which I think would have put us top. Unfortunately Hearts equalised and 5 points at the end of the game was not enough for top spot.

^ That's right, 85th minute penalty had us top of the world. Still quite upsetting, would've been excellent to have that table go down in history. The glory lasted all of 3 minutes!

That is brilliant. Did anyone have the presence of mind to screen shot the real time league table in that 3 minute window..,,….

……….before as all windows do, it slammed shut!

We were fascinated to receive scans of the full 12 page match programme for the Motherwell game on 23 November 1929, with thanks to John Simpson's son, John. The fully scanned programme is now uploaded to our flickr site. A link to the flickr site is also included in the 'Scrapbook' tab for the Well game on the Archive which has been extended today with further press cuttings from the game itself.

It's hard to stitch together the history of the match programmes of Scottish clubs, certainly sporadic pre WW2. Thanks to John we can now see that PTFC had a series in 1929-30. The 8th league game of the season vs. Well was also edition 8 of the programme, so it looks like that tells the story. Celtic and Killie started issuing that season too, although the latter had also done so back in 1899-00. Would be interesting to hear about the history of the programmes in the Scottish game.

Was 1929-30 the first season for Thistle home programmes?

Was the match programme a permanent fixture from then on, or was there a gap until it became a staple after the war?

It's not much, but this brings us up to 49 fully scanned programmes at your fingertips for a flick through. Our list page has been restyled today, giving you a convenient overview of how to quickly access all 49 of them:

It's the 'leader in the clubhouse' Jagger, but you'd expect it to be beaten. Robert Reid stated that the first programme in his collection was dated 15th November 1930, a 2-1 league win at home to St Mirren. That partly helps with the quest for knowledge, Thistle programme issues known to exist in 1929-30 and 1930-31. Jigsaw pieces are being laid down!
