Docherty is in control of most games I’ve seen. He’s the captain and should stay captain.

He sets a good example to lazy barstewards like Murray although needs to curb his own zealousness.

O’Ware has given Thistle absolutely nothing and should never have been offered a contract never mind the captaincy. The 2 CB’s are playing well and the guy that was injured earlier in the season (McKeown?) looked perfectly competent too. Add  Breen, and O’Ware should be 5th choice.

Ive seen many goals this season from the English PL scored as a result of a cut back from the bye line to the edge of the box.  So Williamson needs to get his head up and the mids need to bust a gut to get there. Presently he’s delivering to the corridor of certainty but perhaps not all his own fault.

Agreed that Ciaran McKenna would be in the first choice centre half pairing if fit.

All else being equal, which currently it isn't as O'Ware has not shown as much defensive quality as the 4 centre backs (including Niang in that) above him in the rankings, the only reason I could see justifying pushing O'Ware up the pecking order would be if he re-discovered his scoring touch (which seems to have deserted all of the centre backs).

Having in Liam Lindsay the perfect combination of a reliable defender who could also score goals was probably the main reason why we secured a top 6 spot (and his absence (or at least the absence of a remotely comparable replacement) was one of the main reasons for our subsequent decline).

I wasn't convinced by Graham's penalty in the last home game and yesterdays was a carbon copy. Its frightening really when you think that your main striker does not poses the composure to strike the ball confidently from 12 yards. Its more of a blooter and hope the keeper goes the wrong way. Yesterday the keeper did his homework and gave him a chance to redeem himself. With the rebound attempt, he didn't even really need to kick it hard, merely a feathered touch, rather than horse it over the bar. You have to pinch yourself when you think that these guys are getting decent money for that end product. Everyone can miss a sitter, but two in as many seconds is beyond belief

Agree there. The rebound over the bar was much harder to excuse than the penalty kick itself.

I don't tho' over criticise players missing penalties unless thy're trying to be too cute. It's as common as not for strikers to miss penalties and Graham may well be the only one volunteering. That's him missed two and likewise I wasn't that convinced with the one he scored. Hopefully we've a replacement lined up and maybe not Bannigan, who I never thought looked that confident taking penalties. My memory ain't that good but I think he had a habit of aiming for the same spot too often? I've no idea who'll get the nod. I don't even know who have previous experience of scoring from the spot.

It’s a pity that Docherty is unable to put the ball in the net from close. I think that’s each of the last 3 games at Firhill he has had chances.

Re Williamson, I agree that somebody needs to be available for cut backs but everybody goes into the 6 yard box

I agree with re Graham’s penalty vs East Fife. Don’t even think he is blootering them, he seems to have mishit everyone

I guess we could look at who took the most impressive penalties in the “wins” vs QOS and Morton

I don’t know if Jagszone showed this view of the penalty save, but it doesn’t look the greatest strike or follow up from this angle (although it didn’t look like a great strike at the time either).  And that is the only fit striker we have missing both chances which is even more disappointing.

Penalty save

If we miss chances like this then l generally think we get what we deserve and yesterday that was only one point when it should have been three.

I thought on a few occasions Cardle was in or around that cut back position. Regardless, Joe's usually too ponderous these days to be effective. Another who'll willingly sacrifice spontaneity to get the ball on his good foot.

That last sentence seems to sum Thistle up. Predictable and teams suss us out.

At the end of that clip, the goalkeeper seems to be giving Brian Graham a touch of the Higgins v Muirhead penalty miss treatment. In which case Graham must have kept the heid better at that moment than a few seconds before when the goal was gaping on the rebound.

I believe it is a cricket term first used by Geoffrey Boycott in the 1990s and picked up by football later

You are correct that cricket got their first, at least according to Wikipedia (or should that be Wicketpedia?)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corridor_of_uncertainty, although this indicates that there is an Australian counter-claim for 1980s authorship by Terry Alderman, Allan Border or Merv Hughes

Yes, i noticed that. Graham really does need to keep the heid just now, as he is the only fit attacker we have at the moment. I really think McCall was hoping to play Graham and Rudden as a front 2, but Rudden's fitness is really concerning. I think  we need someone playing up alongside Graham to get the best from him. Lyons is another concern, another player who has come to Firhill with a lot of expectation and really so far done nothing.

Lyons and Rudden. The latest in a long line of players who have come to Firhill with. Lot of expectation and done nothing.

Lyons is a strange one. He scored 4 goals in 6 games as a loaned out Thistle player last season in this division. At very least you'd be expecting him to be effective as an impact sub. McCall has said Lyons is having difficulty adjusting to full time training. I assumed he was on full time training during his loan out spell.

I might be wrong, but i seem to remember something about him finishing a university course while still at Montrose.

I don’t get that. He was fit enough to play in this league (and score) last year when part time. Now he’s full time he’s not? If anything that shows issues with our training. He started 24 times for Montrose last season, now he’s went full time he’s not fit enough?

Its an even worse miss than I first thought. He deserved getting the pish getting ripped out him by the keeper after that.

I think Lyons has an issue adjusting to playing on grass. Twice I have seen him at Firhill now, and he spends more time on his arse than on his feet.

Has nobody told him you can wear boots with screw in studs of differing lengths?

I hope that his degree isn't in Sports Science.  Someone should buy him a pair of pukka boots for Christmas  :santa_laugh:

Bannigan missed a couple last season, I wouldn't be confident about him taking them again.

Playing amateur football, a century or so ago, I recall being asked to take penalties. The advice from the coach was:

1. Never kick the ball at a height that is between the goalkeeper's knee and shoulder

2. Make up your mind before you start your run up to the ball where you are going to put it and don't change your mind during the run up.

3. Where ever you put the ball kick it as hard as you can.

Worked for me. Never missed a penalty in my entire football career. I have to admit I only took one penalty as the team Captain and penalty kick specialist returned from a 1 match suspension the following week!

Could Penrice be the man for penalties?

Was always told hit it waist height, hardest for them to reach (that was from an ex keeper). I scudded the post once and never got another shot
