lady-isobel-barnett
Just for the record the playing surface was excellent and the weather fine for football. No idea why we thought lumping the ball was the way to go. But lump it we did. Arbroath looked the full time side and us the part timers.
jaf
Shocker from Stone. Graham was bossed by Arbroath defence. A lot of rain. A second half to forget.

I thought that it looked like the manager decided, with Docherty out, to go for a team with 4 forwards. Sure you can tell players to go back and help n midfield/defence but it's not their natural game. Bannigan was basically left on his own in midfield hence the lumped balls forward and so Arbroath found lots of space to attack us. Their big black centre forward is a bit of a handful admittedly and our defenders found it difficult to deal with him - maybe Brownlie would have but we have to forget him. When Smith and Gordon came on we looked better and got a bit more grip of the game but at 3-1 down seemed to attacking in a desperate kind of way so didn't get anything. Thought managers initial tactics and line up wrong but players take some blame to, especially just after their second goal (good play on the wing by the big forward but totally unmarked player in box to score from his cross) when we seemed to lose the place and could have lost more than 3. Conclusion, still see good things from some players but don't seem to have completely gelled as a team and defence seems to blow hot and cold. lady-isobel-barnett
A good and accurate summary from Mr B. Perhaps the biggest worry is our apparent over-dependence on Docherty. Firstly that's a poor reflection on our defence when they require a nursemaid playing in front of them. Secondly not much better reflection on our midfield if they're so reliant on one guy to cover their defensive duties.

Dick Dastardly
I remember us ending a run of first round defeats in the Scottish Cup by beating them, ending the game with 8 men.
dl1971
Had a feeling we would get a poor result here. Probably history and we struggle on a tight AstroTurf surface. Agree we have to adjust better at such grounds. Early days. Like most sensible posters.....I'll wait until first quarter to judge where we may or may not finish. a f kincaid
Since the 3-1 win away in Aug 2001 mentioned above there have been 4 competitive matches at Gayfield:- 0-1, 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3. [Throw in a 0-1 friendly as well if you wish.] The overall competitive record away to Arbroath since November 1935 (first competitive match) is:- W 8, D 11, L9 = 28.

However, it is time that we stopped using the term as if it is notable in some way.
allyo
Not sure why you'd have to ignore a person's most obvious physical characteristic when describing someone you don't know. Especially where it distinguishes them from others Bald, blonde, ginger, fat (a bit rude), white (when playing for Cameroon, for example).
a f kincaid
However you want to describe him, he was a handful all afternoon. 6ft 6 ins according to the Arbroath stream commentator. Not just a target man, he showed he could play with the ball at his feet as well and exposed our defence down the right several times. Jaggernaut
Watched it on Arbroath TV. Their commentator was fair, and complementary to the Jags and their fans. Thought the camerawork was OK given the constraints of the stadium, though an annoying blurring effect when following the ball going from one end to the other. Arbroath deserved their win, even if they were more than a little bit helped by our 'keeper, whose effort to keep out an average free kick at his near post was laughable, but whose pass directly to an Arbroath player for the goal that finished the game was truly sublime. Sneddon back for the next game, please! No ifs or buts. Arbroath were first into every tackle and were highly effective at snuffing out our attempts to be creative. They had a couple of real livewires, especially Low (or Lowe), and the 6'5" Nouble was pretty much too strong and good at holding up the ball; made our attempts to get the ball off him look like children against an adult. I'd be more than happy to see him playing for us! Foster: looks slow (some might say overweight), and if yesterday was anything to go by, a clear weak link even in a poor display by the team overall. Felt especially disappointed for all the Thistle fans who made the journey yesterday. ETA: When I saw that Gordon was coming on as one of our subs my reaction was "Game definitely over." And it was. And it was. I suppose Gordon has a knack of being unmarked in attacking situations but I was rather surprised Murray stayed on the bench. Our goal assists have a tendency to come from wide areas and yesterday that was effectively left to Tiffoney to provide. Begs the question why were McIver and Gordon preferred ahead of Murray? Guessing the answer might be to do with pitch size or perhaps because McIver had a previous decent game played wide. Still feel that Murray should've started if only to take pressure off Tiffoney and give the team a bit more balance. When you factor in that Hastie will shortly be on the scene you've gotta wonder about how far down the pecking order Murray will be. As already said I agree that Docherty was a big miss but losing one player shouldn't mean the whole balance and formation alters. Perhaps Mayo could've been played in centre mid and allow Bannigan to play in his usual manner? It's easy and no doubt true to believe if it weren't for two goalkeeping errors we'd have come away with a point. Not so easy to believe that point would've been deserved. I'm not sure what exactly they were accused of doing or if it had anything to do with this incident. EDIT: Have just looked on match thread on P&B and it would appear that this is the incident in question. Anniesland Jag
Watched the poorly edited highlights on P&B and got the impression we had our chances and had two goals( I think) chocked off for heehaw .Nuff said about the Stone’s howlers…hope he learns from it but I’d hope McCall is looking for another keeper options as both our incumbents are very young ,relatively inexperienced and prone to basic mistakes . I know the guy involved and he definitely isn’t that, or racist as is being alleged. And hearing from many who were at the game, the guy in question has (again) been racially profiled to pick him out for attention

I have no idea exactly what happened yesterday and it may well be that on this occasion he is completely innocent and did nothing wrong. Jimmy McD
Having watched the replay of the game a few times Just thinking at the 3rd goal did Harry Stone have a senior moment and think that we were playing in Maroon as Hearts do and kick the ball to he thought was a teammate.. I would draw the positives from our successive title winning campaigns of 2000/2001 and 2001/2002, over the combined course of which we had a negative record against Arbroath. This tells me that a Thistle team designed and destined to win league titles is also a Thistle team which is very likely to lose to Arbroath. If we changed our playing style and attitude to such as would enable us to defeat Arbroath, it may be that we would lose the ability to beat all the other teams in the League. Someone please tell me that this is a logical deduction.
