David Mitchell goalie on his way apparently

Approx 150 odd games for Stranraer, 40 for Clyde and a handful or so with Dundee and Falkirk….  At 32 years old I guess he’s coming to sit on the bench and not expected to really push Sneddon

Never heard of him.

Clearly a back-up signing, probably quite cheap. Hope he does well when called upon, of course.

Good luck to young Sena down in England. Would imagine that standard down there will be at least comparable to the Scottish championship. Good move for him! (Still think he would do a job for us!)

Me too: think there's been too much haste in releasing him. To be honest, he was hit and miss on the Alloa vids that I watched last season, but I think there's def. a player in there that just needs to be a bit more coaxed/trained .

Think Hartlepool are a fair bit better than us. Certainly their wage budget will dwarf ours.

Is there any video coverage of the game in Alloa?

Any Jags fans go to see it?

Frankly, a run-around with nothing at stake and two almost entirely different teams playing in the two halves: Gotta say I wouldn't travel for that.

If you subscribe to JAGZONE  its on there ....It was an alright game  good to see the young guys...........

With the signing of Mitchell and Niang going I think that means we have 16 signed of which 6 are new signings. The 6 signed so far looked like upgrades on those they have replaced

Mitchell> Stone/ Firth
Milne > Hendrie
Muirhead > McKenna
McMillan > Foster
Lawless> Murray
Dowds > MacIver

If McCall wants 21 in total we still have 5 to sign. The 5 we still ned to replace are

McAllister/Hastie
Mayo
Crawford/Gordon
Niang
Rudden/Jakubiak

With rumours of Fitzpatrick, Maxwell and MacKinnon signing that really only leaves replacing Mayo and Rudden/Jakubiak.  We already have a stronger more balanced squad  than last season but if McCall can find players similar or better to Mayo and Rudden then we potentially have one of the strongest squads in the league.

If I had one concern it would be at defensive midfield. We are very reliant on Docherty and if we go for MacKinnon its asking a lot of a very inexperienced player.

On the plus side we have more permanent signings this season so it might be possible to use the loans to get a couple of players of genuine quality rather than having to fill major parts of the squad like last season.

Falkirk are keen on signing McKinnin.  We may also look at signing the other trialist Kyle Docherty as well

Feel you've answered a lot of questions there. Probably need a specialist defensive mid to help out Docherty. But my one real worry remains. Last season our shape and balance was appalling. I'm sure McCall will do something to redress that but I'm less sure he'll provide adequate cover to maintain the shape/balance if injuries kick in.  He has history in that area. Fingers crossed.

I think you are bang on about our balance and shape last season. We played 90% of the season with 1 winger and the other 10% with none because he was injured. When you add that our fullbacks were not keen on overlapping then it forced all our creative play either through the middle or through Tiffoney.  That was partly down to the recruitment having too many failures for one position. We never did sign a winger able to play championship football. Instead we played sub standard options (Murray, Hastie, McAllister) or players out of position (Smith, Crawford, Turner). When you add that our fullbacks were not keen on overlapping then it forced all our creative play either through the middle or through Tiffoney.

On the plus side last season because we didn't push the fullbacks on we were in a decent defensive position whenever we lost the ball so our defensive midfield didn't have to work as hard.

This years recruitment is very much focussed on bringing width and creativity back back into the squad. We already have Tiffoney and Lawless. If Fitzpatrick and Maxwell sign we have plenty of options in wide positions and with fullbacks that want to get to the byline we look like we will create a lot of chances. However if we are going to push the fullbacks on then it will mean the defensive qualities of our midfield and central defenders will be put under pressure.

Looking at what we are likely to have as a squad I still wonder if we fall between 2 formations. 4-3-3 is probably what McCall wants to play but means Docherty, Bannigan and Turner going box to box and I'm not sure they can. 4-2-3-1 looks the better way of playing our fullbacks and getting most of our wide/ creative players on the park but we just don't have the 2 defensive midfielders. Just now we only have 3 central midfielders so we definitely need at least 1 more, hopefully they can tackle and defend.

Robbie Crawford departs.  Wonder if to free a wage up for another signing.

I agree with McCall re priorities being in other positions but that begs the question of why we signed the lad in the first place. The need to strengthen in other areas was even more evident back then. That right flank partnership of McKenna and Crawford was lucky if it was up to League Two standard. More it highlights the need to have adequate cover in all areas. Last season the right side attacking mid relied solely on Hastie then McAllister with no back up.

We've got the goalkeeper and defence more or less well covered. Attacking central midfield likewise. We lack an understudy for Tiffoney and player with pace down the right wing. I think Fitzpatrick could be a useful signing as he can cover a few attacking options. With the likes of Lawless and Graham in the squad we need to compensate with genuine pace.
