Brownley, Holt, Aero and Tunji. Why do we need Mayo as a 5th defender. Unless it is to play him as a defensive mid, in which case why not get someone who is a specialist in that role.

Maybe IMC wants to play 3 at the back with cover for injuries/suspensions/form...  But I wonder if Akinola is staying, he never looked the same player in the second half of the season and wasn't first choice anymore. Perhaps the lad is homesick and wants to move back south. I have no knowledge just wondering. I'd be delighted if he stayed and rediscovered his form though.

If Mayo had been our player and we had  got promoted I'm almost certain we would want to hang on to him. Based on that then I reckon it'll be unlikely he'll return this summer. You'd imagine he'd want to either get loaned out to a club further up the current pecking order or stay at sevco and fight for a squad place. Our best hope is that sevco feel he's got a bright future with them but think another season (half season) in the Championship would benefit him more. McCall would have to indicate that he sees Mayo as a regular starter. I kinda sense that Brownlie and Holt will be our first choice centreback pairing, so if Mayo was to come back it would be strong indication we'll be going with three at the back. Personally I believe Mayo would be very useful playing in the middle of a back three. He gets forward with ease and isn't slow on the ball.

My Airdrie friend was initially not a fan of Murray but started to warm to him as and I quote " Murray had turned Airdrie into a winning team playing attractive football"!

He was quite neutral  about Murray leaving for Raith but is now furious that he it seems, is planning to take Airdrie's best player(s) with him.  The Airdrie rumours are that Easton is not the only player going to Raith.

I was surprised to read that IMC considered our midfield one of the best in the keague and wondered if anyone can recall when we last dominated the middle of the park!

Our midfield could be one of the best if we can get away from putting Bannigan and Docherty as the first two names on the team sheet.

Our goal in the 1-1 draw with Killie at Firhill came from a forward run by Mayo from deep in our half. His run ending with a pass to Docherty who of course scored with a wonderful strike low into the right hand corner of the goal.

More of this if we can land Mayo would be good.

And the header he scored to win the game at Firhill v. Accies.

If McCall was to move to playing 3 at the back then more CB's would be no bad thing, there is no guarantee that Brownlie will be the same player after such along lay off certainly not straight away.

Akinola, Holt, Brownlie, Muirhead and Mayo/another  would be a good set of options, especially as many of these can fill in a RB/LB/CDM etc also

If indeed we do sign (or bring in a loanee) another centreback I feel whoever it is should have a bit of mobility about him. Mayo fits the bill and can also play defensive mid if required. There's adequate full back cover there as well tho' has to be noted only from a defensive viewpoint.

Must admit that instead of all the speculation, I prefer to wait until new signings are actually announced,...

and then we can trash the new signings as journeymen, rejects, too old, etc. before they go on to confirm those things that all the supporters could foresee while the management was blind.

Regards McCall. Yeah he is blind when he says we have the best midfield in the division and they create very little.

The problem with that is there has been an almost penny pinching attitude for many a year at Firhill which has resulted in many seasons signings being left to the last day.

This would mean having little to discuss all summer till the last day of the season.  Granted the trend has been bucked a little this season with the signings of Dowds, Milne and Muirhead.  But we still are well short of players, not least in the attacking/forward areas
