Just watching Fake Thistle Vs Arbroath and looking at ex Jags players Devine,. Welsh, Craigan,, and even Riddgers..all playing well and not thought good enough to play for us..

I quite liked all of those players but I suppose the one difference was that we were in the Premiership when we released them. Still think Welsh is a class act

We, Jags Fans  didn't rate Devine and there were numerous negative comments about him every week. Similarly with Craigen though perhaps not as severe. For my part I thought Devine was a solid defender and although he made the odd mistake I thought he didn't deserve the criticism he attracted.

Archibald said he wanted to keep Ridgers but we didn't have enough money in the budget to do so.

Welsh and Craigen left for similar reasons - both wanted assurances of more game time: theassurances weren't forthcoming so they left!

Devine wasn’t good with us, Welsh was injured a lot, Craigan had just joined from uni the season we got promoted and wasn’t premiership quality - Riddgers, I don’t remember.

My memory might be failing me but wasn't the problem with Welsh that he had some medical/health condition that made him a slow healer. This condition meant that even  with normal injuries the recovery time he needed was much longer than that needed by other players.

When he joined ICT he was in and out of the side but in the last few season he has been one of their best players  been made captain and is a regular in the team. I assume the health issue has been resolved or being managed more effectively.

Welsh was always excellent for us when fit. Craigen wasn't quite premier quality (I don't think he's played at that level since). Devine was excellent in his first season, played next to Lindsay in the top 6 season; like so many others he was so much poorer the next season. Ridgers wasn't as good as Cerny and was only ever going to be a back up.

That's basically my recollections. Devine's disciplinary record with us poor. Probably not a coincidence it's a lot better since he dropped down a division. James Craigen was a credit to himself when we were in the top tier. He did lack premiership quality but he always gave 100% and with his fitness levels he just about compensated for any ability shortcomings.

I never really understood the admiration that many fans had for Welsh. But he definitely seems to have come onto a much better game than he ever did when he was with us.

I always liked Craigen for his effort and fitness; almost the exact same as my liking for Christie Elliot. They were both passable even in the Premiership, because not everybody can be a stand-out at that level.

Would I want either one back for next season?..... Yes!

Welsh? Yes!

Lawless? No.

Ridgers? Yes

Paton? No way!

ATS? Yes!

Higginbotham, Cardle, Samsom? No way.

Sena? Yes!

I can remember singing "Christmas Time, Lindsay and Devine" to the tune of "Mistletoe & Wine" in that brilliant 3-1 victory away at Ross County which triggered our run to the top 6. He must have been good to break into the 12 days of Archibald Christmas song monopoly.

ATS is completely done now.  Falkirk released him - according to their fans opposition players in league one were able to run rings round him.  Sadly injury’s have caught up with him and he is nowhere near the player now that we have fond memories of

Would not want Elliot back either.  He had a great attitude and always gave his all but in many areas he was very limited.  In the 8 years he was with us for instance his crossing was diabolical barely went to a Thistle player.  You would expect that to have improved significantly over the period but it didn’t

Talking of ex players and he was for a short period of time Jack McMillan who was young when he came on loan to us and I felt had a lot of potential has refused to sign a new deal with Livi because he doesn’t feel he will be guaranteed enough first team football in the premier league

I beg to differ. You could have a cross of the decade competition with Christie providing 3 outstanding candidates:

1) Cross to Lyle Taylor at Firhill to spark fightback in last game of season v Ross County on our return to the Premier League

2) Cross to Ade Azeez for the equaliser away against Celtic in the top 6 season

3) Cross to Kris Doolan at Firhill to take the lead v Rangers a few weeks later

Most of the time it didn’t.  There was the odd time it did as in the scenarios you refer too.  Still would prefer we moved on from him anyway

You're opinion of course, Jaggernaut, but I disagree entirely with that. I think Welsh was absolutely integral to our promotion. He then performed well at the higher level (when fit). He was regularily a standout for us in the 15/16 season.

I always thought Thistle should have kept Sean Welsh. Great attitude, leadership, skills. He did lose time (twice?) for a bad knee injury but we could have built the team around him and he could still be a Jag today. No such thoughts on Ridgers, Devine or Craigen.

I really rated him and hoped we could keep him after his loan spell.

Hi ‘Third Lanark’!
I was wondering, did you used to be a Thirds supporter back in the day,  before following Thistle or perhaps was there a ‘HI-Hi’fan in your family? My uncle was a big Thirds fan and earlier this year I bought a book called, ‘The Ghosts Of Cathkin Park’: The Inside Story of TL’s Demise’. Very interesting, but ultimately a sad story about a once great Glasgow and Scottish football club, and it’s betrayal by its owner. I saw them play a number of times notably coming back from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 at Parkhead v a pre-Jock Stein Celtic!

I've long wondered if any Jags fans are still around who saw us playing against Third Lanark. I wonder if the two clubs were rivals, in the way, say that Clyde and Thistle used to be. Would there be  big visiting supports at Firhill and Cathkin when it was us vs. them? Any stories?

Hi gents I wasn’t born till well after their demise.  Funnily enough by sheer coincidence I stay 5 minutes walk from Cathkin.

my interest came as my great grandad Johnny Campbell who was a Scottish internationalist (also played for Celtic and Aston Villa6 was a Third Lanark playing legend- played in the 1903-04 team that won the top league and the 1905 team that won the Scottish cup.

2 of his sons technically my great uncles also played for them in the 1920s.

My sad as well as watching Partick Thistle would also regularly attend Third Lanark games in the 1960s.  I was involved in resurrecting them at amateur level in the 2000s

Regarding  Partick Thistle- Third Lanark rivalry- there was none it was friendly.  Last ever Third Lanark captain Alan Mackay told me that for socialising it was always the jags players the Thirds players socialised with.

Third Lanark fans told me they always like Firhill and had a respect for the Jags.  It was Queens Park and in particular Clyde who they described as rivals and who they really loved beating

That book I described above is published by Arena and written by Michael McEwan. It is mainly about the the last seven years of Thirds’ existence when eg they were managed by George Young and latterly Bobby Shearer. The ‘villain’ of the story is a man by the name of Tom Hiddleston who took control of them and who, many Thirds fans believe ‘engineered’ their demise because he saw opportunities to make money on that happening. One story stands out and tells you the way things were. A Thirds player was badly injured (arm I think) and was to be taken to hospital during or after a match. Hiddleston callously told one of the staff going with him in no uncertain terms was the player to be cut out of his shirt at the hospital (to avoid further physical damage/limit the pain of the player before he could be more closely examined by medical staff!) Hiddleston was more interested in not wasting a shirt! Also, the players were paid directly by gate money towards the end (before they stopped being paid at times.) One player said, “We walked out the ground with our jackets bulging with pennies, half pennies, theepennies, etc ! A lot of money  belonging to the club was never accounted for but there were many suspicions. TLFC folded in 1967, the same year Celtic won the Euro. Cup, Rangers got to the final of the Euro. Cup Winners Cup and Kilmarnock got to the semi final of the old Inter Cities Fairs Cup (equivalent of old UEFA Cup, and present Europa League Cup. In addition Scotland beat England 3-2 at Wembley, with Jim Baxter doing his famous keepy-uppy showboating! But, it was a sad moment too for Hi Hi fans and for Glasgow, which previously had had five teams generally in the top tier plus Queens Park-the team who has won the Scottish Cup most, after the Old Firm. My uncle emigrated  to Canada but whenever I met him, he could only talk about the “Great Jimmy Mason” a brilliant Scottish international Inside forward (no. 8) who famously played in the Scotland team v England at Wembley which won 3-1 (and scored!’) I sent out to my uncle a TOFFS (The Old Fashioned Football Shirt Company) replica cotton shirt based on those they wore in the 50s, with the famous badge embroidered on. He loved it! I also sent him a book about Thirds by Bert Bell, the acknowledged expert on their history (BB signed it too.) BB is often to be found telling his stories in the Scottish National Football Museum. I chatted to him last time I visited. He never supported any other team after Thirds’ demise and devoted his time to keeping the name of TLFC alive in various ways. Thirds were my second Scottish team for a very short while. I never saw them as a close rival to Thistle, but perhaps I was/ am more tolerant of certain other teams. I saw the ‘rival’ as Clyde FC-! I saw Thirds play the Jags on a few occasions. But the 4-4 result in (I think 1963)  is one of the stand-out matches in my memory. It’s featured in another book I have called ‘Classic Matches: TLFC.’
