I thought Lawless was terrific, and probably MotM for us, though can't argue strongly against it going to 2-goal Turner. Mitchell again had another fine game.

Arbroath looked slick and moved fast, much faster than us, so each goal came as a relief.

Solid, no-nonsense  defending by us, and in some emergency situations inside the box did well not to concede a penalty.

Certainly a much better game than the dreadful borefest between Dundee and Cove on Friday night.

He was also very poor against Ayr.

When he drops into midfield, as he did a few times today or goes to the wing, it does not give the midfield any options up front.

Graham dropping into midfield created our only goal against Ayr. He did similar to good effect against QP. With Turner, Lawless and Tiffoney we have plenty of other players capable of getting forward and scoring. Graham is a better player when he drops off a bit and gets the ball into feet than when he gets involved in wrestling matches with the centre half.

Maybe I'm getting too inured to the standard of refereeing we've had to put up with this season. I didn't find the ref noticeably any worse than usual. in fact marginally better. That's not to say he still wasn't a joke :)

There were several incidents that stood out for me.
Hilson deliberately throwing the ball the back on the pitch to prevent us taking a quick bye kick; Same players challenge on Holt in 2nd half(Turner got sent off for one like it at ICT); Not allowing advantage when two clean through; and Fitzpatrick getting his head arm locked by O’Brien, I think.

:detective:  BLANKETY-BLANK CAMPBELL MAKES HISTORY

● It's 3 direct goal involvements in 3 consecutive games for the sublime Steven Lawless.
● It's 5 direct goal involvements in his last 4 games for Scott Tiffoney. Livewire.
Kyle Turner nets his first-ever brace as a Jag.
Kris Doolan's Jags have yet to concede in the opening 45 of any match at Firhill and remain unbeaten in the Maryhill heartlands.
● Thistle blank out Arbroath for the 4th time in the League this season. It's the first complete League goal-blanking since Alan Archibald's Jags did so versus Dundee in 2016-17.
● Incredibly, Thistle register their sixth consecutive clean-sheet versus Arbroath. It's only the second time in history Thistle have done so against any one club, the record run (10) being set versus Montrose in 2021.
Dick Campbell becomes the first manager in history to go six games without a goal versus Partick Thistle.
● Partick Thistle go into the final League game of the season as top scorers in the Championship (63) but, mathematically, could still finish anywhere from 2nd to 6th. Cinch.

ongoing sequences:
● 5 competitive games without defeat, 1st Apr 2023 to date. (Longest run since: 6 games, 18th Feb 2023 to 18th Mar 2023. Joint club-record: 16 games, 15th Nov 1975 to 21st Feb 1976 & 30th Sep 2000 to 13th Jan 2001.)
● 5 competitive home games without defeat; 4th Mar 2023 to date. (Longest run since: 6 games; 26th Nov 2022 to 21st Jan 2023. Club-record: 24 games; 5th May 2001 to 17th Aug 2002.)
● 45 consecutive competitive appearances for Jack McMillan, 9th Jul 2022 to date, a new personal best. (Longest run since: James Penrice - 51 games, 7th Sep 2019 to 10th Apr 2021. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games, 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)

Dowds is here next year, Mullen isn’t

I suspect that Doolan's choices in respect of whether Dowds and/or Mullen come on are game specific. Yesterday we were in a comfortable 2-0 lead, and Arbroath were not really threatening us. Therefore there was no reason to change the shape and flow of the  game. Graham was limping with what is hopefully a temporary knock, and Dowds was the obvious like for like replacement to keep things as near as possible the same.

Last week, we were keen to grab a goal to secure the win against Hamilton. Mullen was brought on to partner Graham up front as part of a change of formation. Dowds was nowhere to be seen, perhaps indicating that Doolan does not currently regard him as a potential game-changer.

Moving on to the away section of Auld Jag's home and away doublet, Friday night will be a strange atmosphere with Thistle no doubt backed by a huge, noisy and anxious support, while the Raith fans will be less engaged, perhaps keen to see what some younger squad members can offer.

The fan-occupied stands at either end of the stadium being so far away from each other, with no real human presence on the sides in between, means that even in the most competitive of fixtures for both sides, there is no real fan interaction.

You can imagine that if we were playing one of the teams with whom we enjoy more of a current rivalry (I think that Morton and Ayr are now in that category) at their ground, even if the other team had little to play for, their fans would still be up for it and ready to pour scorn upon us if our promotion play off hopes hit the buffers! I do not see Raith fans being so bothered about what happens to us.

Not sure what impact this contrast between fever pitch and comparative indifference from the respective stands will make on the way the game is played.

Final thought for now. When else when Thistle are playing have we required to be aware of what is happening simultaneously at another game, as it will have immediate and decisive relevance for our own fate, whether as regards winning a championship, securing promotion, gaining a play-off place or avoiding relegation?

The only one I can think of was our last regular league game in the Premier when we were away at Dens Park, but playing close attention to St Johnstone v Ross County. We had to equal or better County's result to "escape" (temporarily, sadly) into the play off place, failing which we would suffer immediate automatic relegation.

County took the lead early, so for around an hour of "real time", County were in the play off and we were going straight down. Doolan scored to put us ahead, and then St Johnstone equalised to give us double insurance.

Cannot remember any other example, but maybe someone else can.

For the avoidance of doubt, I would not count earlier in the season promotion head to heads with for example Airdrie and Morton which had resolved themselves before the final round of fixtures.

But it is easier to blame someone else than accept your own failures. The league was there to be won, but over 36 games we will have come up just short.

We were 3 points ahead of Raith Rovers with an 8 goal difference advantage going into the last game. We lost 3-1 at Ayr and Raith drew 1-1 with Kilmarnock. Effectively we got in the week before.

Correct. We beat Dunfermline 1-0 in the second last game of the season to all but get 4th position. Then went on to lose our next 3 games.

Last season did we not scrape into the playoffs on the final day ?

You are right, now I remember it. Raith needed something like an 8 goal swing, and it all seemed like a foregone conclusion. However, we went 3 down to Ayr and Raith took the lead against Kilmarnock.

Just for a few minutes it became a trifle concerning. Fortunately Kilmarnock equalised and Ayr rather took the foot off the gas. Then the prolific Alex Jakubiak inspired a tremendous fightback to save the day.

PS Just realised that GRE has already explained all that above. Apologies for duplication!

I think 5th is the lowest we could finish.
