Fawlty Towers
Looks like the honour of starting the first competitive match thread of the season goes to me Not going to do the who should start, formation stuff as there are others who are better equipped to do that (or so they think). Just a few practicalities for tomorrow. The turnstiles will be staffed so there will be someone there to scan your ticket or code but might add a bit of time on so take that in to consideration. The Alan Rough suite is also open as well as the Aitken suite before the match. There will be a minutes applause before the game to remember all the Jags we have lost during 23/24 season and the summer. The match is being streamed and this includes those in the UK & Ireland. https://ptfc.co.uk/ptfc-news/supporters-bars-on-saturday/ https://ptfc.co.uk/ptfc-news/partick-thistle-v-montrose-minutes-applause/ https://ptfc.co.uk/ptfc-news/partick-thistle-v-montrose-manually-operated-turnstiles/ https://ptfc.co.uk/ptfc-news/montrose-match-available-to-stream-worldwide/ 1
partickthedog
On holiday on the Isle of Skye and so will miss my first competitive Thistle fixture home or away since the opening 2 League Cup ties last year. At least the way the schedule has fallen means that I miss only the one game and I will be back in time to go to Edinburgh City next weekend. My live sports watching today will begin with the Waternish Sheepdog Trials followed at 3pm by the Glamaig Hill Run. 2500 plus feet of ascent up an impossibly steep mountain in the Cuillin and back down again. I hope that playing Montrose will be a little less challenging. Let me put a suggested team out there. No doubt others will disagree! 4-2-3-1: Mitchell Williams Muirhead. O’Reilly Milne Stanway Turner Chalmers Robinson Fitzpatrick Graham Tough on Ashworth, Crawford and Mackay, but I expect them all to come on reasonably early along with Lyon and to make significant contributions and no doubt challenge for starting positions. Enjoy the game everybody!

Enjoy the game everybody! From Doolan’s Jagzone interview, Robinson was ill last weekend and Ashworth and Bannigan had calf strains. He is going to try to give everybody some time in the group games so that they are ready for the league.

An oversight caused by holiday detachment! I will bring Luke in and somewhat reluctantly put Ben on the bench. On the positive side, it shows the excellent options we now have available. I am not saying that this is necessarily our strongest team. I can see Kris putting out 3 equally strong but differently shuffled variations on the theme in our first 3 games. The Motherwell game may start to reveal the anticipated strongest XI, but then again it may not depending on the qualification position in the group.

Stanway back in the midfield. McBeth to centre back. Muirhead to the bench. My new revised team. Not sure which are stronger feet for McBeth or O'Reilly, so shuffle the two round if necessary: Mitchell Wasiri McBeth O'Reilly Milne Stanway Turner Chalmers Robinson Fitzpatrick Graham
lady-isobel-barnett
Tho' I don't particularly like the concept I can see players being fielded to help get them up to match fitness. There always seems to be surprise results in the group stages (eg Spartans beating Dundee Utd last year). Balancing act between taking the League Cup seriously and being 100% ready for the start of the League. Hopefully we can do both. The number of subs we can now make helps. So hopefully we'll have both a strong team out and give other players valuable game time.

BowenBoys
I have a monthly subscription with PTFC TV which I use whenever I'm away in Vpnland. I continued to pay my subscription through the summer. Have just got home from work and logged in to my account to find that I'm expected to pay £12 to watch this afternoon's game. No thanks. I just renewed my subscription, 40 minutes before the game started. Impossible to get the match without paying another 12 quid. Nothing in their instructions works! Feckin' shambles. I give up. Jimmy McD
We made hard work of that today, they go up the park twice and score twice, we go up the park all day long and eventually get 3.. still onwards and upwards..
lady-isobel-barnett
Despite it being so narrow a win I thought there were lots of positives today. Prefer Turner in that forward role but he may have to play further back to accommodate Robinson. Also thought Fitzpatrick used the ball well. His decision making better than usual. laukat
First half anything good we were doing was coming via Chalmers or Turner. Second half Milne and FItzpatrick really stepped it up and in part that was due to O'Reilly being able to quickly move the ball. Having a left footed centre half is a big upgrade on last season. Despite going behind and Montrose equalising it was one those games that I never thought we wouldn't win. Game was marginally faster than a friendly so difficult to read to much into any performances.
HeWearsNumber9
These group stage games are always tricky based largely on how early they come around. Teams slips up against lower division opposition consistently every year. I would say generally off the top of my head we have been very consistent against lower league opposition across all our group stage games since the format was introduced. Winning today was all that mattered and getting minutes in the legs. Again, always an awkward format in the sense it’s basically your pre- season games but you have to be competitive while factoring in game time and testing things simultaneously as if they are your friendlies. HeWearsNumber9
As for the game itself, we created plenty but were far from clinical. That will come with time. Think that would have been robbery if Montrose would have taken anything. They were the definition of clinical as they scored with quite literally their only 2 attacks. Mitchell must have been scratching his head as to how his hands never touched the ball once but to pick the ball out his net twice. Thought stanway had a good game, mcbeth was quiet and the defence had little to do. Chalmers and fitzy both bright and graham not at his best but always in the right place at the right time. What a signing Kyle turner will prove to be and can see him winning player of the year for us already. Cracking player and controlled the game, his set pieces give us a whole new outlet of scoring. My only worry is how we accommodate him, I think behind Graham is his best position and he thrives there. I think Robinson has to play there though, so sadly he may have to be a play maker from deeper.
Fearchar
Stanway might as well have been composing more poetry. Williams looked sound at right-back, if a little reluctant to overlap. He and Chalmers seem to be cooperating well - as did Milne and Fitzpatrick on the other side. Rarely have I seen a game with so many balls going right through the opposition in front of goal without anyone getting a touch, perhaps because Graham kept wandering away from the penalty box. He needs to be kept there insted of trying to do everything himself. Each wing has a winger and a forward-minded fullback: Brian, you are superfluous there. As for spirit or will to win - Robinson seemed to be the only one with it, and he got a yellow card for his trouble. Doolan's teams seem content to stand off the opposition when they are in possession, and try to absorb the pressure. Someone needs to tell them they're not Real Madrid, and need to press all the time when the opposition is in possession, or they'll end up giving away goals to teams from lower divisions. Today's game was nearly lost due that that lackadaisical attitude. Unlike her ladyship, I think Turner is more effective playing from the back, as he did in the near-promotion run-in, and in any case, Robinson wins the ball more often up front. Turner tried there, but little came off for him today.

Jimbo
I prefer Turner in no 8 rather than no 10 role when he can see what's in front of him. One positive for me today was how comfortable O' Reilly looked at at both LCB & LB. Final comment- baffled by Doolan's 3 subs at 2-1. Overconfidence?
