Could this be another case of one of our brightest prospects offski before we even really get to see him, while our first team continually gets filled with free-transfer journeymen and over-the-hillers?

Every cloud and all that, least means we're getting something right at academy level. Anyway clubs from down south cherry picking young potentials has always existed. It would tho' be great to see the likes of Loney & Braid play for us before moving on but this is the next best thing.

I'm well used to most of our top first-team players leaving before we get the best out of them (my first realization that life was unjust is probably when Joe McBride departed), but when the players are disappearing now when they've just barely left school, it rankles a bit.

Because of Brexit English clubs with lots of money can't take players under a certain age 16/18? so fill their boots with Scottish, Welsh & N Irish players but not sure how well it suits those players and our clubs getting any decent £

Good article about this in the Herald recently (paywall) https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/24644862.english-clubs-brexit-brawn-drain-putting-scotlands-academies-risk/

The cynic in me thinks most of them will end up back in Scotland anyway, since they won't make the grade down south (Fitzpatrick).

Loney and Braid will probably be getting paid more to be in English U18 teams than we pay to most of our first team. How are we supposed to compete with that ?

By having a league structure that aims to benefit all member clubs rather than just two?

Just a suggestion. Silly, I know.

Is there anything to even stop a club down south from opening a training academy in Scotland?  Eliminate the middle man altogether?  I’m surprised no one has done this yet - kids would be lining up around the block to try out.

Overseas clubs do this all the time here in the States.  The kid who lives across the street from me played for Olympiacos or some club.

It still wouldn’t get anywhere near the sponsorship that the English leagues get. All the TV companies want up here are old firm games.

+90% of players won't make it regardless of where they are from in UK/Ireland or Europe.  Unfortunately most drop out of the game all together.  Academies suck up players weakening previously strong established youth teams and even amateur teams esp U21 level so famous clubs have gone.

I think you're right. It might be different now, but my school had many outstanding players, some of whom (e.g., McGrain, Gray) went on to be international legends, and other highly became highly successful club players (e.g., Stevens, Miller at Ibrox). But many more somehow never got spotted by scouts either during school matches or in clubs outside of school or for some reason they weren't considered good enough, even though they were streets ahead of us "average" (flattering myself) players. Others, despite their obvious talents, got to play for lower league teams (e.g. Morton, Hamilton, Queens Park), but never made it any higher.

Said in the "Bobby Dinnie" thread that I was awaiting "The Scout: The Bobby Dinnie Story". Since read the book. It's part autobiography part biography and I found it very interesting and a good read. Certainly relevant to Lambies Lost Doo's last post in so much as it dwells on a pre academy era. The likes of times when Arsenal and Aston Villa had first dibs on young talent from Possilpark etc. I'm sure without much difficult I could come up with an all time international XI exclusive to those players whose senior debuts were down south. Law and Bremner to name a couple.

From a Jags point of view I don't know if under the old system we'd have been in the position to sign the likes of Loney & Braid. That could be down to a matter of where the lads youth teams were based and if we had a working relationship with that particular club. At the moment we don't appear to have a scouting system. Even when we appoint a Sporting Director we may still just rely on connections and recommendations. I sense to be ahead of the game we need the academy. It's a matter of quality that's crucial.

Was that Eddie or Frank gray, or indeed both? You must have had a terrific school team ..
