New Manager Thread

Apologies for the half-inebriated response.

I've seen names from various clubs (people who've done nothing (ZILCH) at their previous/current cub) being touted to take over.

No! No thanks! Let guys who know our weaknesses and any strengths we might have take us forward.

I might be in a small minority but I'm not against Imrie and I can see the sense in it if it happened.

It feels to me like the current squad and season is the last act of the team and style McCall built. Doolan did for a while get the team playing better but I think one of his issues was that despite quite a few transfer windows he still relied heavily on McCall signings and signed players to play with them therefore the style and attitude of the team hasn't changed all that much. I think Rhys McCabe could be ok but probably would continue the same style as Doolan tried and not sure that's what they need.

We really need someone who will implement a completely different style and attitude whilst doing so with a lesser budget and making best use of the players that are under contract. That's pretty much what Imrie has done at Morton.

I know Imrie come across as a bit of wee bit of a ned and I well remember his robust performances for the Clyde team was largely a Maryhill Juniors select. However he doesn't suffer fools demands 100% effort and he would kick his granny for 3 points which is an attitude we don't have enough of. He's kept a poor Morton squad competitive in the league when most of it was the squad that he inherited and which was regularly in the relegation playoffs.

Imrie also seems to have the knack of getting performances and another season or two out of players that looked done at other clubs. That was very much Lambie's real strength and both had the same weakness of not really wanting to give younger players a go.

Not convinced McCabe or Imrie are the answer but equally I could see the sense in either being appointed. Unless we are going for some complete unknown I'm not sure there is any better candidates in Scotland that we could reasonably get.

Let me join you in the minority.

My preferred choice would be Steve Robinson   currently St Mirren. In our current circumstances I suspect this would be an  unrealistic suggestion. Perhaps an idea gor the future.

I know Imrie is unpopular perhaps because as a player he always seemed to do well against us. I however, not withstanding his dress sense when it comes to chinos, have no problems with him being appointed  our next manager.

I think he can offer us a lot most of which Laukat covers in the above post. Most of all I think we have suffered by having too many 'nice' managers and what we need is a tough b******!!. Someone in the Bertie A6uld mould would suit me fine. I think Imrie has potential in that direction. He certainly won't tolerate the lacklustre, couldn't give a toss performances we have witnessed for a while now.

If he is appointed we all need to get behind him. It's for the good of the club.

If Imrie gets us to the Premier League no one would care about the history of the man. Its not a popularity contest.

Surely that’s relevant about any manager or do you mean because he is likely more unpopular than other coaches we are linked with eg Rhys McCabe, Ian Murray etc

Appointing Imrie would not be good for the club. It would alienate the majority of the support.

And please don’t tell me what I have to do.

I am not telling you what to do. I wouldn't intentionally do that. I thought I was stating a general sense of purpose and that was that for the good of the club we should all get behind whoever is appointed. The new manager and fans will all want the same thing - success for the club.

With regard to Imrie I don't believe  his appointment will alienate "the majority of the support"; perhaps a minority but not the majority and certainly not Laukat or me.

As far as telling you what to do  I wouldn't kid  myself that I have that level of ingluence. You will do whatever you see fit.

My point applies to any manager who ultimately gives us success. Thankfully the fanbase doesn't actually decide....

I'm surprised that no-one with better computer skills than me hasn't set up a poll for who would make the best next manager.  It's a fan owned club after all.

Where you work, did the share holders have a poll (or any say) in the appointment when you got your job. Fan owned is not the same as fan managed or fan operated.

If Imrie is to be our next manager then I can see why, if you look past his playing style his teams are well coached and punch above there weight year after year, he has shown the ability to vary a playing style and recycle his squad.

With a DoF who doesn't know the division it seems sensible to bring in a manager who does, lessens the risk.

Anyone old enough will remember Brian Graham had a pretty poor popularity rating with the Thistle support before he signed and that seemed to have gone alright.

I’m not sure an experienced manager like Imrie would be a good fit with a Sporting Director who is very inexperienced within Scottish Football.

I also think Imrie would want to play his own brand of football regardless of any Sporting Director’s philosophy

Do you know what the clash between Kettlewell and the Motherwell fans was about ? Whatever it was, it was bad enough that it was affecting his family and that was why he quit.

You'right LJ

From what I read his wife and children came in for vile verbal abuse. I have no thoughts on the identity of the new coach but I do believe we need a Scott brown type to kick a few backsides...

His family weren't abused but stopped going because of what was getting shouted at Kettlewell.

Not pleasant but not unsurprising for a football manager when things aren't going well on the park, even when things are going well they get abuse hurled at them 🙄

Things seem to have changed since when "Hey Auld, are you watching this?" was considered by some to be unacceptable harassment.

I'd love to know what the "banter" was at matches in say, the 1920s, or even before then......

(Over to our talented wordsmiths....!)

I wouldn't be too upset if Kettlewell became our manager. Having grown up in Katewell Avenue, and having been told often enough to put the Kettle on; well, "a watched kettle never boils."

But it can be heated enough to make a good cuppa.

Thank you.

I suppose that if you did not like Kettlewell, you could say that he was not your cup of tea.

I used to go my holidays to my gran and grandpa in glanderstone drive, knightswood. Loved the wee 9 hole golf course when I was about 10. Thistle won the European cup many times by beating the brick built bomb shelter in the back garden. By heck The Drum produced so so many great footballers...

I played on that 9-hole course many times, especially during school holidays. My golf never really improved!
