New Manager Thread

When we decided to go down the sporting director route I had figured it was going to be a fairly modern move, bringing in someone with a blend of commercial and football knowledge.

I had expected it would end up being someone few had heard of, maybe someone in a football operations team at a bigger club looking for a leadership role just as an example.

Going down the "failed" ex-manager route doesn't fill me with any particular excitement or optimism.

I had the same expectation. However, I think every manager is going to have failed somewhere in their career. The other thing that I was hoping to see in the SD is someone that is going to be able to lead the club’s football direction for a good number of years.

Alex Ferguson was sacked from St Mirren after taking them into Europe - Lambie was sacked by Falkirk - all Football Managers are sacked at some point - its the nature of the Game

Got to feel sorry for the guy, having to watch that!

His role at Ayr United was a dual role. I always thought it was a way of justifying his wages, if he wasn't going to play too much. Scouting for Wigan may have been through his relationship with Shaun Maloney, who has now left them.

I'm sure he will be on the lookout for a new job in football. No idea if he is looking to become a Sporting Director or not.

I would take McGeady in a Heartbeat - Great Pro

Ferguson had long since left St Mirren when they qualified for European competition for the first time.

I stand corrected - I just vaguely remember a Newspaper Ad that said "Saints don't Smoke" - with the Team on the Park with Fergie-  and had in my Head it was a game in Europe - Age making things up again - not for the first time 😀

Yahoo sport are reporting that Lee Clark is on the shortist, however I don't know if that is a reliable source. It also mentions McCall, which @Jordanhill Jag has dismissed and I tend to believe JJ on this one.

I'm sure I recall JJ discounting McCall due to his disinterest in the womens' and youths' side of the game. I'm not sure whether he meant the board or McCall himself ruled him out down to that.

Whoever gets the job should expect to last no longer than 2 seasons (more precisely, 23 months), which is the median tenure of our post-Lambie managers. The obvious long-duration outliers are McCall (1st spell, 4 years) and Archie (6 years and some).

Hmm.... what if Archie got the job.....

I thought we were hearing but the end of the week about the sporting director role?

Anyway, looks like it is Brian Graham's job to lose.

We all have to wait on the process but I'd not be upset if he gets the job.

Why Graham and not Mark Wilson who has done just as good a job ?

I don't think we'll be appointing co-managers. So if Graham gets the job you'd assume Wilson will be his assistant. Although you probably knew that 😉😇

Or Wilson, with Graham as assistant was what I was suggesting

Maybe. Does player assistant- manager have more scope than player-manager?

Who knows.

I think it would still be Graham named as manager if the club goes with the interim pairing.

Think this makes sense on a couple of levels. Firstly they deserve to be kept on. Also it helps the incoming SD in so much he won't have to make a difficult decision straight off.

Comes from the Daily Record so would advise taking with the contents of a mine in Siberia.

Among the candidates shortlisted from over 100 applications were former boss Ian McCall, Danny Lennon and ex-Motherwell and Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough.

First time I have heard Danny Lennon's name mentioned.

No problem with Graham and Wilson staying on. But are there jobs that should be getting done at this stage of the season, which cannot be done without a manager and while awaiting a Sporting Director?

I'm thinking like renewing contracts, identifying potential targets etc. Or is that not really a priority at this point?

2 former Clyde managers. They got that story out a day early.
