Stevie Lawless - Testimonial Match

Watched the game on the stream and it was a good workout. Glad to see Martin back and Ashcroft get the first 45 mins which I assume was the plan. The youngsters did not let themselves down and Lawless got his goal so all good (apart from MacKay going off early). Even though it was only a friendly still good to win as it becomes a habit.

Any idea of what the crowd was?

For a friendly testimonial match, it was pretty competitive, and as the live stream commentators stated, under normal circumstances there would have been several yellow cards for some of the tackles. A particular mention for Budinauckas, who kept us in it with a string of important saves (and our young sub keeper also had a couple of excellent saves near the end). Those saves, and the sheer number of corners that St Mirren had tells a story: they were pretty much on top, and we had to defend (which we did well). Definitely enjoyed the match, and all of the youngsters who came on in the second half did well.

Did anyone see what happened to MacKay? I wonder if a deal can be reached in January to move him on (although it's never a good look when injured). I know it isn't his fault, but he's been an absolute waste of a wage for almost two years. Setback after setback.

The most competitive testimonial I’ve ever been to. We defended well and both our keepers were in good form. At one point we had 3 youngsters and Logan playing our back 4 and they didn’t look out of place.
Special mention to Scott Martin who played very well and scored a peach, he has plenty to contribute for the remainder of this season, and never stopped talking and encouraging the youngsters.

Wee Stevie’s penalty was a textbook finish even if the award was in the “complementary” category.

Sad to see Dan Mackay falter again, a nightmare 15 months? for him.. but good to see Ashcroft get 45 and the aforementioned Martin get 90. Overall a good night.

Noticed Mackay hoping around on crutches in the tunnel a wee bit after he got subbed off. Agree with @Yellow & Redneck that its probably time to move Mackay on. If you're getting injured taking fresh air swings in a testimonial game then it probably suggests he struggle to ever put a run of games together.

Good to see Martin get 90 minutes and Ashcroft looks close to being ready which is also good.

Couple of decent performances from the youngsters. The boy Nosa looks massive and pretty quick it'll be interesting to see how he develops.

Always thought testimonials was meant to be a bit more fun, with cameo's from former players and some exhibition football. Tonight felt more like a reserve game.

Hopefully Lawless got a decent amount. Given the weather, the short notice and lack of advertising the turn out was ok.

I enjoyed the 2nd half better than the 1st, but it was a bit of a strange night especially with Stevie going off after about an hour. I thought the first half penalty claim was a good shout and it was almost like the ref gave us the one in the second half due to some words from Martin & McBeth after he awarded the St Mirren one.

Martin had a good game , I was impressed by Dolan (again) but a most of youngsters played well & Budinaukas had a few decent saves.

I hope Stevie did ok out of his testimonial ‘season’ even with the short notice of tonight’s match. He has been a great servant to us but a bit of an unusual testimonial situation having a few years break between his spells at Firhill.

That got me thinking; Are there specific stipulations about when a player qualifies for a testimonial? If so, is it decided by nationwide authorities, or is it up to individual clubs? I've long thought that if you play for 10 seasons, you get a testimonial (whether you want it or not!), is that right?

Which Jags players have had one? From (frazzled) memory, I remember Donnie McKinnon, Jackie Campbell, Alan Rough, Kris Doolan, Stuart Bannigan, and now Stevie Lawless. Anybody else, maybe from earlier years? I don't think Davie McParland got one, though nobody would be more qualified than him. I also seem to remember a few "benefit" games (e.g., for injured players who retired from the game), but details escape me.

Kenny Arthur and Alan Archibald had testimonials and so did John Lambie.

As has been said its not the player's fault. fault. I think the club now needs to investigate if this latest setback is a recurrence of his original injury and if so does it threaten his career.

If not then I think we should persevere with the player until the end of the season. After all we gave Bannigan 2 years.

MacKay is under contract, so the club gains nothing by releasing him. It also would be very bad for the club's reputation with other prospective players.

Main thing is it is so unfortunate for the player, who himself must be wondering if that's his career over. For his sake, I really hope this is just a minor setback.
