Described as a sweet moving left half who made the ball do all the work, the Geordie signed for Thistle in May 1942 and made a valuable contribution to the club throughout the decade, the undoubted highlight being his key role in the Summer Cup glory run of 1945. Maurice played in 5 of the 6 games and scored 3. His brace against Hearts won the day in the Quarter Final and "no Hearts forward could hold a candle to Candlin for opportunism, always on the spot"... a f kincaid Posted June 10 Report Share Posted June 10 Jimmy McGowan was the epitome of rugged, 40s and 50s full-backs. He played 553 times for Thistle and numerous press reports are testament to his ability to come back on after treatment - often when he had been stretchered off. It took something "special" for him to miss matches - such as broken ribs or appendicitis. The "Evening Times" reported that against Hearts on 17/1/1953 while he was off the park for treatment, a spectator was heard to say "Ach, it's only a broken spine. They'll weld it on Monday". On his last appearance for Thistle against Nairn County on 3/5/1956 (he had been persuaded to come out of retirement for one last game), the "Weekly News" reported he pulled a muscle in the first few minutes but ignored all attempts to be taken off. He played on in agony and even prevented a goal with a desperate lunge in the last minute. The "Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser" ran a feature on him in his retirement (in Plains, Lanarkshire) in 1981. Jimmy recalled one of his favourite scrap cuttings about a bus skidding into him at 50 MPH outside Firhill. He got to his feet and made for the players' entrance as if nothing had happened.
