Thistle v St Johnstone

Recommended Posts

If we have an advantage its probably that with injuries no-one really knows what formation or starting 11 we'll go with.

If they are fit I would expect to see Clarke, McPherson, Reading, Ashcroft, Stanway, Let'sosa, Crawford, Fitzpatrick and Samuel in our starting 11.

However no idea if we go 3-5-2 or some shade of 4-4-2.

If its 3-5-2 then 2 from Ingram, Loughrey and McBeth will be in beside Aschroft and maybe Fitzpatrick off of Samuel but the again 3-5-2 tends to mean 2 target men so maybe Diack and Samuel?

If its some sort of 4-4-2 then maybe McBeth at the base of a diamond or a similar setup to St Mirren with Stanway at the base, Fitzpatrick in behind Samuel and Diack?

I think our biggest problem is if we go behind we don't have really many ways of changing our attacking options.

Given we might not be as creative from open play set pieces become even more important so hopefully we have been working on these in training. During the game tomorrow (and the remainder of the season) I would like to see us put the ball in the box more often from free kicks as we tend to take ones that are outside of shooting range short.

It will be difficult but we only need to look to last season when Falkirk came to Firhill and we went down to 10 men before half time and still won (just a thought but is Ablade a free agent).

I hope that we don't resort to endless sideways and backward passing.  Our playoff position is virtually secure, and tomorrow night should see us take risks by quick movement as we did against St Mirren.

I'd like to see Turner start this one, I appreciate out wide is not always his best position but he's got a good delivery, he's fairly defensively responsible and he would have McPherson covering a lot of ground on the overlap.

Clarke

McPherson Ashcroft McBeth/Loughrey Reading

Turner Letsosa Stanway Crawford Fitzpatrick

Samuel

We need FItzpatrick wide and having a more defensively sound option on the other side will maybe give him a bit more freedom to take people on.

Gives very little in the way of options off the bench but it's a huge opportunity for Turner to step up and contribute.

Against a strong opponent like StJ, I'm happy to cut the team some slack on this. At least sideways and backwards passing tends to mean we keep possession. Also means a lower tempo game which might be important if our bench is light.

For anyone living in the US, for the second week in a row, our game is shown live on Paramount, at 3:45 pm EST, along with the Napoli game.

Napoli game on BBC Alba tomorrow night also. You could say the Napoli game is the starter with our game being the main course. :happy2: :fan:

Last season we were down to the bare bones come the end of the season and we still managed some of our best results until we ran out of everything vs Livingston.

I'm not writing off Friday night but the disparity in squad strength & depth, makes any talk of Thistle winning the title a pipe-dream.

A win will be massive in terms of cementing second place then a chance for some squad management to build momentum towards the playoffs.

It won't be pretty but worth a watch, under the Friday Night Lights of Firhill.

Looking forward to this evening as at the start of the season I did not expect us to be in with a chance of winning the title at this stage and being 25 points ahead of Ross County (with a game in hand). If we win then still all to play for and a draw or defeat means second would be the aim which would still be our highest finish since came back to the Championship and make the playoffs slightly easier.

John Lambie stand is sold out, and St Johnstone had sold more than 1500 tickets (as per the Perth courier) last night, looks like being a big crowd

I see someone posted a link on Facebook from 15 minutes ago stating that we had now sold 6000 tickets.  still a few hours to go yet would be a great bit of income if that figure kept increasing.  The last few times we have had attendances over 6000 have been when we had Celtic in the cup and the play off games and in these games we had to give half the gate money to Celtic while in the playoff games the SPFL takes half the gate, at least with tonights when stewarding and police costs have been deducted its all for the club

Assuming that’s including STs
