Thistle v St Johnstone

Recommended Posts

This season has exceeded all my expectations, but the injuries to key players really showed tonight. Full of effort and well drilled, the Saints didn’t really test Clarke, but we never really looked like scoring and it’s hard to see where the goals are coming from for the remaining games.

I think the main positive I took away from that was Wilson obviously recognised we were nowhere to be seen after half time and changed the shape which seemed to unsettle STJs rhythm and allowed us back into it.

They aren’t particularly great and will drop more points before the end of the season. Unfortunately so will we.

First thing my Dad said when he picked me up from the train station was "St Johnstone should have had a man sent off for elbowing Fitzpatrick". Did not see it at the time but does seem to have been a naughty one.

We clearly missed the injured players but those who played worked their socks off. If we can pick up the 3 points on Tuesday I think we still have a slight chance as I would not be shocked if Saints drop points before the end of the season.

Wilson’s tactical change helped in the second half but overall middle to front we were lacking any meaningful threat throughout the game. Needed big performances from the likes of T and Crawford but never got them. Samuel looked quite isolated for most of the game. Unsurprisingly the absence of Watt and the general lack of depth were apparent.

But if we can win on Tuesday and Friday we’d be only 2 points behind them going into the weekend albeit having played a game more. We looked pretty tight at the back tonight and with OReilly available again we might only need a goal in each game to take 6 points. StJ are good but not great and could easily drop points in the remaining games. Head says we won’t catch them though.

I heard the total  attendance as 6,100+ with StJ bringing 1,400+

Mate watching it on tv said it should have been a red card for an elbow in Fitzpatrick’s face. If only there had been VAR……. 😱

We could have played till midnight and would still have never scored .  Letsosa runs about like a headless chicken should have been hooked earlier than he was .. Thankfully we have still got Alex Samuels...

Lets'osa had a good first half, including a brilliant run to the byeline and cross that nearly led to a goal by Stanway. However, I agree that he fell away in the second half. Crawford was ineffective too.

Ashcroft and Loughery both excellent. I was very surprised that St Johnstone did not bring on Agyeman.

So given the depth and quality of the Saint Johnstone squad, to which Wilson has already referred, surprisingly we stand on equal terms with them with a win each and two draws.

I think this is commendable performance given the lack of depth in our squad aggravated by the recent trio of injuries and the suspension of O'Reilly. Four of our key players missing from tonight's game.

I must admit I was dreading this game because of the above factors  and thought we might be heading for a heavy defeat. So we'll done to the manager, coaching staff and players and especially all the fans who were at the game. who by securing a draw moved us another point ahead of Arbroath.

If we win our remaining 7 games I'm sure we will be well in the hunt for the title.

C'mon the Jags.

A hard fought game with neither side showing much guile or looking like scoring. With so many of our better players missing, a point was a decent result but we needed a win tonight. I've never really quite been convinced that we had a title-winning side but we've given it a really good shot.

We defended well throughout with McPherson keeping McPake under control at least in the first half - too far away for me to see second half. Bold substitutions to try to win the game  Deliveries from set pieces was disappointing again.

We now have a squad limited in numbers and I would hope we get more from Fitzpatrick, Lets'osa & Turner who are talented footballers. However I can see no merit in Crawford - not a ball-winner or goal threat, can't pass and never looks for the ball. Letting Martin go on loan looks like an error.

Eyes can't be everywhere. You either see it or you don't. Have to accept these things, as the alternative is the nightmare of VAR.

True. I didn't see the elbow myself and it was more or less in front of me. Looks a straight red but you have to ask why Baird would want to deliberately clock Fitzy and risk a sending off.

Wasn't as critical as others re our first half display. In fact felt quite upbeat at half time. Second half was a different story and I doubt there's many who watched the game will be that surprised it ended goalless.
