Today's games (Sat 28th March)

Recommended Posts

Pleasing set of results. 4 points gets us 2nd which is assuming Arbroath win their last 5 games. With Saints playing Arbroath next weekend something has to give there, hopefully Ayr keep Brown in place until then as never like playing a team who have just made a managerial change.

A week ago SJ were 8 points clear and not withstanding a difference in games played, to everyone the league looked all over. A week on their is a big difference in the picture. The lead is now down to 3 point and it's game on!

Im taking some credit for this. At the start of the week in a text conversation with a friend, an Aberdeen supporter, I told him I fancied Morton to win and QP to draw. On Friday following our victory over Ross County he texted to say "hope you win the league would prefer to face SJ in the play-offs".

And yes I have a lottery ticket!

A word on the Scotland match.... disappointing, but when Japan made their final substitutions (bringing on a few of their normal starters) they upped the pace and directness. They're miles ahead of us in the rankings, so expected win for them. But what was most disappointing was the terrible first-half performance by Scotland. According to the BBC, we had two touches in their penalty box in the entire 45 minutes. We were subjected to repeated, excruciating  displays of up to 20 or so passes in our own half, sideways or backwards, not even attempting to move forward, with all opposition players already in defensive positions. It's a dreadful tactic, with every such pass making it less likely that a goal will come, that is, unless one of those passes gets intercepted and the goal is for the other team (almost happened vs. Japan, and we've seen it happen with Thistle). Attempt that in the WC (if it goes ahead) and we'll get eliminated with no more than a whimper.

I was at the game. The real tragedy is that Japan hardly got out of 3rd gear

Yesterday was the first time I have been to Hampden for a good few years to see Scotland play all I can say is it was dire, I feel sorry for the guys who have paid a lot of money to go to the World cup and we play like that, I realise yesterday was a friendly but come on..

I wouldn't pay the game or performance any mind.

I've long since stopped going to friendlies, as they are dire.

They're probably more damaging than anything else and we're never up for them.

Not saying we'll win many games at the WC but we won't play as we do in friendlies.

Completely pointless imo.

In fairness to Clarke International friendlies are nowadays a waste of time. Only value from a Scotland perspective is to give minutes to guys like Gunn and Paterson who aren't playing at club level.

Moving back to Thistle related events. Yesterday pretty much confirms second place which given there are still 5 games to go is a really excellent achievement. It now leaves us with a free shot at chasing down St Johnstone secure in the knowledge that we have an 11 day rest period if we have to enter the playoffs.

The rest of the league is starting to finalise. Its not impossible Ayr don't win a game between now and the end of the season however it still looks like County and Airdrie would struggle to get 7 points from their remaining fixtures.

Also looks like Arbroath and Dunfermline are getting close to clinching 3rd and 4th. However Dunfermline have a pretty busy April with 7 games in less than 4 weeks. Hard to see their squad being in great shape for the playoffs. Arbroath seem to have not picked up as many points since January and their squad may struggle to sustain any sort of playoff run.

Our fixture run in is interesting. If Ayr don't sack Brown its possible we play Ayr at the right time. By the time we play Dunfermline they could be tired after 3 games in 7 days and equally comfortable in 4th. Airdrie may be relegated by the time we play them on the 18th. Hard to see how Arbroath and Queens Park will have much to play for by the time we play them in the last 2 games.

Conversely St Johnstone will have to play Arbroath next week who will still need points to secure the playoff and 3rd. Airdrie will probably need something against them on the 11th to have any hope of avoiding 10th.

That being said its hard to see us winning the league unless we get 5 wins and even then St Johnstone would need to drop 4 points given their goal difference so its still far more likely we finish second

In the Premiership its possible for anyone of Kilmarnock, St Mirren, Aberdeen or Dundee to be in the playoffs. Its also looking unlikely that it will be resolved until the last fixture so whoever goes into the playoff probably goes in having not had any rest and perhaps a bit dejected having slipped into 11th on the last day.

Our bench on Friday looked quite strong and if we go to the playoffs hopefully we get a couple more back. I think livingston last year showed that to get through the playoffs you need a big squad, a bit of a rest and to catch the 11th placed team when they are on a downer. We look like we might be shaping up for that.

Regarding Airdrie, I think at most they would be 7 points adrift with 3 to play when we play them.

Nothing to do with football, but a bit of an anomaly for our away games in April. We play Ayr, Airdrie and Arbroath all teams like the month we play them in begin with A.

Maybe we could fit in away friendlies against Aberdeen, Arsenal and Athletico Madrid!?
