Squad Update – 29th May 2026 | Partick Thistle FC

Surprised we're in discussions with GMS unless he's a cheap backup winger

Not sure what to make of Smyth, Ingram and Taylor's loan ending. Had hoped to see at least Smyth singing but perhaps we need to wait until his St Mirren contract ends?

It could be that and there is also the issue of who will be the St Mirren manager. Smyth was definitely out of the picture under Robinson but McLeish or someone else might want to take a look during pre season.

If we assume that Fitzpatrick, Stanway and Chalmers will depart - they should do what is best for themselves and their futures and few would blame them for moving on - then the squad will need some pretty fundamental rebuilding over the close season (and presumably up to the end of August).  A challenge in the short term and an even bigger challenge if we are to be competitive next season especially given the competition- mainly, in my opinion, Dunfermline, Livi and ICT

No issues with any of the departing. None will missed

Hopefully Smyth and Ingram return.

Wingers will be the massive issue this summer. Don’t think Fraser is the answer.

I wouldn’t be touching GMS unless other than in a coaching capacity.

It could be the opportunity to ditch the wingers and play more centrally, with wingbacks providing width

Going by the season just gone Wilson certainly wanted to play in a certain way at the start of the season when pitches were good and then there was a bit of a change later on so definitely need some options in the squad.

Expect it might be more to do with that they are contracted to their parent clubs at present, therefore nothing official can be said.

Doesn't mean that talks aren't taking place.

Similarly with Logan Chalmers. If St Johnstone have PCA'd him already, then possibly they cannot officially announce it until the expiration of his Jags contract on 31st My.

Euan Henderson it looks like

Hmm...I'd rather we went for his 'brother' Jay...

We were interested in young Rangers winger Alexander Smith but a deal fell through and he ended up at Dumbarton in February where he impressed and helped them stay away from the trapdoor...could be a decent loan move...

Not sure the PCA not announcing is a thing really, we announced McPherson and Clarke, was a few others ie Sibbald and Falkirk

Who’s to say it’s not a double helping of Hendersons 👀👀

I think Turner needs a fresh start somewhere that will play him regularly in his preferred position. To my mind he's not been the same player since we had him playing at right back last season.

I did read that Raith were looking at him however also read that Raith had some budget problems.

Wherever he goes I hope he can recover what he once had. If nothing else his dead ball delivery used to be excellent but its been a long time since I've seen even that.

Of the players leaving Turner is the only one I feel might be a mistake. However unless Wilson is willing to change the way he wants the team to play then I agree with laukat he probably would benefit from a fresh start. I only hope it's not with any of our likely main championship contenders. He leaves with my best wishes for future success.

Looking at the players we already have lined up for next season I think we need more cover for our goalkeeper and at full back. Also central defence so that we can gradually replace Ashcroft. Someone a bit taller and with a bit more pace than Ash would be good. We also have to decide what we do with McBeth. Is he good enough for the Championship and if so is it in midfield or central defence. We need to be fair to the player and find him a settled position.

Regardless of whether we hold onto Stanway, Chalmers and Fitzpatrick we need a robust midfielder who can win the ball and pass it. Also as was demonstrated in the Cup Tie and Play-off games with St Mirren we need far more guile and craft in midfield. I don't recall us being able to cut through SM anywhere near as often as we should have been able to, especially when, in all 3 games, we battered them chasing an equaliser/winner. I think we also need a 6 yard box striker. We definitely missed Graham last season. Watt and Samuel's, I thought excelled for us in there own way, but how many balls were fired across the 6 yard box looking for the ghost of Graham?

Retention of the 3 players we all expect to lose will cover all the issues related to pace etc.

On last point I would like to see more of Diack next season. I believe there is a player there and I hope Wilson and Rae believe so as well. They are the people who can bring his potential to the surface.

So in summary: we need a

Goalkeeper

Left Full back

Central Defender (robust with a bit of  pace)

Central Midfielder (robust, ball winner and who can pass it)

Midfielder - creative (pace as well would be good)

6 yd box striker

And if we don't retain AF & LC - then 2 pacy wide players (traditionally known as wingers); GMS I don't think is the answer.

Best wishes to all for a great season and an even more successful one coming.

Disappointed to see Turner on his way, thought he was under utilized this season and if we don't get Fraser and a few others back he would have been very useful.

Hopefully good news that at least 1 of the 3 we all thought was away might stay, so fingers crossed for that.

I am interested to note that we are still in discussion with Thomas Horn.

He showed up really well in the very early part of last season, beginning with a smart finish against Glenafton. Obviously not top notch opposition, but still a touch of class. Then in the League Cup, before Samuel was signed and while Diack was injured and Watt was coming up to speed, he regularly got some decent minutes, usually while we were holding on to a fairly comfortable lead. He got in among the defenders, made his presence felt and generally worked them harder and held the ball up better than Diack seemed to do in a similar role.

I had high hopes that he might start to break through at some point during the season, but a loan move to Peterhead did not work as well as expected and I am not quite sure what happened from there. I do not know if anyone else on the forum has any more informed insight as to what the future may hold for him. If Watt and Samuel are both fit, I presume that there is no need for both Diack and Horn. Possibly another loan move, but hopefully one that works out better?

I disagree Euan is the one that has a decent scoring record for the championship, as well as providing a decent number of assists, while Jay doesnt seem to have played much at County at all (mind you they were in a complete shambles last year, going through managers like confetti so it maybe that he and several others were not able to settle at all).

would this be the first time we have had 2  brothers in the first team squad since the Hansen brothers?

Im aware that both Ben and Harry Stanway are also at Thistle but Harry is not playing in the first team at all
