Surely to goodness he must have contacts that could unearth us the next Hreinn 'Turbo' Hringsson, Jesus Tejero or Jukka Santala!!!! The more time that passes, the more I'm convinced Baraclough is the George Costanza of Partick Thistle. Pound for pound, the single worst signing Thistle have ever made. Even worse than Stephane Bonnes And the more I'm convinced that if Mark Wilson was spending his time scouting players, dealing with agents & negotiating contracts, then the product on the pitch would be severely diminished. And I don't get the George Constanza analogy, & I've watched every episode of Seinfeld

What we did before was take punts on players through agents , some worked and some didn’t , so employing a Sporting Director to actually scout , identify and evaluate players seemed a good idea . Before players contracts etc were dealt with by the Chief Executive ( Gerry Britton , Ian Maxwell etc ), nothing to with the manager I fail to see what our Sporting Director has brought to the table that hasn’t been done before.

So you don't believe in employing a sporting director. Many many clubs do, so presumably it is recognized as a valuable role. It's the modern way... a bit like possession football. Hankering after the old way of doing thinks is im afraid to say not moving with the times. Like the manager, the sporting director will be judged by results. So far so good on that front. Fawlty Towers
I do wonder if we had not lost the late goal against ICT and then Samuel scores in the 3rd minute against QP and we get the victory if we are even mentioning Ian Baraclough at the moment? Personally I think it is a good thing having a Sporting Director but it actually does not matter what I think, it comes down to what works best for the head coach in terms of the first team (remembering that the sporting director also has the youth & womens team in his remit).

I'm sure Wilson isn't complaining but at our level where every penny is a prisoner then the role is an indulgance. We're not trawling multiple markets in Europe, we're shopping in an under stocked Scottish market . If we start unearthing gems that Wilson/Rae couldn't have sourced themselves I'll maybe change my opinion. Baraclough at the minute is a glorified overpaid Admin Assistant until he proves otherwise. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. All I would say is that Wilson has stated he does not like the dealing with agents/etc part of the game and really just wants to focus on the coaching element so that needs to be taken in to account. fenski
Exactly. Less punts, less signing failures, i.e. the right thing to do when "every penny is a prisoner". I don't think you can pass judgement on the quality of individual players, where they came from etc. It's about the quality and cohesiveness of the squad overall, less passengers. It's about steady improvement in the quality of the squad year on year, not lurching around because a raft of players have all left, and the manager has been dealing with player recruitment off the side of his desk. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I find the criticism of the Sporting Director appointment strange, when we appear to be steadily heading in the right direction.
Glenboig Jag
Seems strange that we loan out Horn & Diack not to bring in another back up striker as if Watt and Samuel get injured we have a major issue so I can understand why folks are getting concerned about our sporting director

In this window we had a great chance to cement our title aspirations, IMO a creative no 10 and a striker who is going to get at least double figures for the season. Instead as another poster has said we’ve let go two forwards with no replacements, surely a Sporting Director should have a contingency plan in place . Lenziejag
We do have cover if Samuel or Watt get injured - Henderson has played in that role.

Possibly might be the answer, stats last year were Tony Watt 6 goals and Alex Samuel 9 goals in the Championship Hopefully Euan Henderson might be a solution

Duke Gekantawa
It’s difficult to say whether we need a sporting director. However it is absolutely the norm for clubs at our level and lower on the continent, and it seems repeatedly that these clubs outperform Scottish clubs size-for-size. One thing I do know is Wilson’s performance as a manger (so far) with a Sporting Director is a country mile better than his performance without one. How many Clubs in the Championship have a Sporting Director ? And the Sporting Director was in place before Wilson was appointed
partickthedog
35 minutes ago, Jordanhill Jag said: How many Clubs in the Championship have a Sporting Director ? And the Sporting Director was in place before Wilson was appointed I think that the comparison being made was with Wilson's previous comparatively unsuccessful managerial spells with Airdrie and Brechin City where, as far as I am aware, no Sporting Director was in place.
