It had been a 12 team top league which made for some rather big scorelines when the top 5 played the teams in 11th & 12th. Unless teams like ourselves, Motherwell & Aberdeen "push the boat out" nothing will really change. The only other option is that the smaller 5 sides get some additional funding from the governing body to create a more even playing field but I can't see that happening. Qualify for Europe? Not even remotely near it, never have been. In the men’s game, teams at least have a chance, and there are usually some upsets against the old firm. In the SWPL, a bottom 5 victory, or even a draw, against a top 5 is as rare as hen’s teeth. I might be missing the point here so apologies if that is the case but in the men's game there are teams who have beaten the "big two" on a decent number of attempts and achieved top 6 finishes, etc but in the women's game it is has happened far less (shorter period granted) and the top 5 in size will be the top 5 in places (only the order to be sorted). partickthedog Posted August 24 Report Share Posted August 24 One good thing about the women’s game is that there does seem to be a genuine top 5, any one of which has the possibility of coming out on top. The resources appear to be more evenly spread among that top 5. i accept the main point that the almost unbridgeable gap in resources between teams 5 and 6 is a major problem for which there is no obvious solution. Jaggernaut Posted August 24 Report Share Posted August 24 My post last night was largely wine-fuelled, and mainly a lament of our clearly dismal results against the erse-cheeks in the past several decades. As others pointed out, there is at least a greater chance of "upsets" in the men's game (and even trophies). But not, it seems, for us! Cup matches against top-flight teams, for example, can get us all excited in the build-up, but defeat seems-- sadly-- inevitable. As pointed out just the other day by TTA (I think): we've won only one of our last 21 matches against higher-ranked opponents in the League Cup. Jeez.
