Jaggernaut
https://ptfc.co.uk/ptfc-news/luke-mcbeth-joins-ayr-united-for-an-undisclosed-fee/ I'm sorry he won't be with us for the season that's about to start. Reliable, never hides, as good as most at this level in the positions he can cover. Especially disappointed as O'Neil and Ashcroft are both increasingly getting caught out because they're getting slower, whereas McBeth is still only 27 (I think). Maybe they've offered him more money and/or more guarantees of starting matches. Hope Wilson has somebody at least as good coming in or ready to step up when required. ETA: Wilson's comment about Luke's departure indicates that playing time was indeed at least one factor. That's not the first time I've made that same mistake. No idea why! Probably lack of sleep this time (up at 2 am for Brazil vs Germany, straight into German vs Paraguay, then straight into the office......) Jaggernaut
Well, at least this is right: Brazil and Morocco both prevailing in extremely tough matches, and into the quarter-finals. Makes Scotland's exit at the group stage appear not as bad as many of us feel it was. Either Netherland or Japan would have mollicated us. partickthedog
Amazing number of players have both Thistle and Ayr on their recent CVs. Without even pausing to think or check external sources I came up with the following team. I am sure that someone can identify a more recent forward to replace Mark Roberts. Going further back, Thistle legends such as Andy Lyons and Jean Yves Anis also played for Ayr. David Mitchell/Josh Clarke Aaron Muirhead Luke McBeth Kevin Holt Paddy Reading Ross Docherty Ben Dempsey Stuart Bannigan Robbie Crawford Logan Chalmers Mark Roberts

jagfox
Mixed feelings about this as Luke is a character with a load of good qualities about him. Always gave his best but it would be fair to say not the best player to grace The Palace of the Gallus but was popular with his teammates, gave his all and had some important moments. In some ways we will/ could miss his versatility. Hopefully he can nail down a position and a starting spot at Somerset Park. Their manager certainly seems to think he is an important addition to their squad. Footballing wise he also had a few clangers and sometimes just could not get into a game. Overall sad to see him go but I feel we need to improve the overall quality of the squad to tie in with the manager's plans. Pleased to get a transfer fee for him which could help in improving the squad.
lady-isobel-barnett
Sorry (and a tad surprised) to see Luke go. I thought his dual role as a centreback who could play holding mid (or vice versa) was enough to guarantee both value to us and sufficient game time. Obviously Wilson's major priority is to increase the overall quality of the squad and I've no reason whatsoever to question his judgement. To acquire this I'd suggest Luke needs direct replacing, in so much as signing a centreback that's comfortable bringing the ball out of defence. Important if/when we go to a back three one centreback will regularly cross the halfway line. Of course a defensive mid who can play in the back line would be equally sufficient. If the transfer fee is more than merely a nominal sum then there's no reason to believe we can't increase quality.

I can't imagine we'd let Luke go without having lined up a like-for-like (Luke) replacement. Or even an upgrade.
