We start with a winnable home tie vs Brechin City, a team we haven't played in a good while. Three points is a must and hopefully the team can get us off to a winning start for season 2026/27. Much better than we have been in previous seasons, also good consistency from last year with much of the squad knowing what Wilson is looking for. That said, I do worry about central defenders as Dan/Lee looked a bit suspect at times and neither is the most mobile of defenders. Thistle_1876 Posted July 10 Report Share Posted July 10 Quite glad the squad is relatively settled for this group, annoys me every year how a major competition has basically had to become a pre season friendly exercise for a lot of sides because of how early it starts but we have always seemed to fair well in it, especially given how it can be a good source of income if you can progress through. These games tend to have more than an element of friendly mode about them. More so for the bigger teams. Even at that we should beat Brechin. Regarding the season I'm about as optimistic as I was immediately after our ARR Craib Cup win in 2012. Given a bit of latitude we're only maybees a few loan signings away from having a complete squad. A squad that's not suffered any major overhaul. Pressure is then on us to get off to a good start in the League. Grinding out a couple of away wins would help immensely. Fawlty Towers Posted July 10 Report Share Posted July 10 McPherson and Diack are still carrying injuries from end of last season so miss out. Ingram is a bit behind in terms of fitness and Dempsey picked up a knock so misses out. Hopefully be a bit cooler tomorrow - will we have a hydration break? The eventual winner (notwithstanding St Mirren’s triumph last season) will almost certainly come from the European competitors who will be seeded and parachuted into the last 16 of the “competition” effectively they will play 4 games and one of them will pick up the trophy. Perhaps it is a good thing to have competitive matches prior to the start of the league campaign but there is also a suggestion that this competition has a loaded dice feel to it and will ultimately bestow the honour of victory and the bulk of the financial spoils upon sides who have barely had to actually compete in it. Good points, well made. I like the format though and this Cup has been good to us in a way over the years. I doubt many teams have as many accumulated points in the league stage of this tournament than us, and it's way better than friendlies. The sad thing is, the footballing world embraces formats such as these, as sponsors and the majority of fans (including neutrals), want to see the 'big' teams in the latter stages. The World Cup format has achieved this outcome in 2026, where the top 4 seeded nations were 'drawn' to avoid each other until the semi-final. With Scotland being out and now being classed as a neutral (barring one team of course), I'd much rather see a France / Spain v Argentina final, than an Egypt v USA for example. Double standards I feel from myself, as if my team were still in, I'd be advocating a free-for-all non-seeded draw. When we're out, I'm happy to watch the big guns.
