PTFC v Ayr United

Recommended Posts

Thought McBeth was fairly fortunate to stay on the pitch. Nothing malicious but he racked up the fouls after his yellow and thought he’d have ended up with another yellow.

I liked him at the Jags and was sorry to see him go but today showed again he’s not a midfielder.

Wasn't there today. Can anyone confirm if the reason we didn't sign a striker is because we now have humongous unnecessary score board on the bing?

The previous one was an embarrassment, but surely an upgrade should only be the kind of thing you install when finances are buoyant and we're a league above?

Tinpot Thistle strike again.

We're still some distance short of clicking into gear but there were some improvements from last week.

Watt was much better, Stanway was getting into better positions (how he didn't get a penalty I don't know?) and the midfield shape was better however we seemed totally reluctant to shoot in the first half which made it all very predictable and slow around Ayr's 18 yard box.

Thought McPherson was our best player. Personally I think Smyth has been very good for most of this season, he appears to have cut out the silly mistakes and was dictating the midfield for most of the game. O'Reilly's passing in the first half was poor however is headed clearances and defending in the second half was very good.

We are asking a lot of Drozd and Fitzpatrick at the moment. Beyond providing the creative spark they are also being asked to play nearly a full 90 minutes each game so could do with Henderson and GMS back just to have the option to freshen things up.

Dempsey helped solidify the midfield when he came on and played alongside Smyth.

Ayr were not better than Queens Park in the first 45. They were better in the second 45 but we more than deserved our win.

Like the new score board, are we are getting it in for VAR purposes on the assumption we will need it next season?

Man of the Match today was a battle between Paddy Reading and the New Scoreboard.

In answer to criticism above, I thought that the new scoreboard was great. Among other things it made me much more aware of the various sponsors than I would otherwise have been. Surely it will pay for itself very quickly if the extra exposure encourages increased sponsorship.

A comfortable enough win but not a pulsating performance...second half was a bit dull. The opposition again packed their defence to stop Drozd & Fitzpatrick - we really need the midfielders to be more of a goal threat. After all the unproductive corners last week, it was good to get a goal from the Hands of Stone.

Drozd would not have been my choice for MotM - he had some good moments but not his best display...that would apply to just about every player. O'Reilly won every header but passing a bit wayward on occasion. Our defence is not giving up many chances even without Ashcroft.

I expected Livingston & Ayr to be challenging this season but they showed very little.

Do you know that it cost the club anything ? It might well have been paid for by the sponsors

Drink must have been strong in the sponsor's lounge if they thought Drozd was MoM. Watt and Loughrey were far more worthy candidates for that accolade.

Stanway was a waste of jersey today. Clearly ineffective against the packed Ayr defence in the first half, saw a bit more of the ball in the second half when they opened up, but his contribution was still underwhelming. And I say that as a Stanway fan.

Objective achieved, which is always the most important thing, but concerning that after five games we're still not really catching fire.

I thought it was almost a carbon copy of the QP game. Yes, we tried to move the ball a bit faster, but faster sideways passing doesn't actually get us nearer to scoring, there needs to be more running at/around/through defences, rather than inevitable getting our to our wingers who are then standing still and often already double-marked (e.g. Drozd). Our final passes too often overhit or just wild (Smyth again!) and if our crosses even manage to get past the first defender, we just don't have a striker of anything near the class of Doolan or Graham.

What does look very good at the moment is our defence, thank goodness.

I have noticed that all the scores in the recent past have invariably involved the numbers 0 and 1.  That is because the footballing gods are sending us a message in binary code.  I have now deciphered the message and can reveal that it spells out:

"Y-O-U   N-E-E-D  A  S-T-R-I-K-E-R"

I've been saying this for a while and that we have missed Graham. While finding someone who can as a natural attribute score goals against packed defences it is not the full solution. Perhaps more importantly we need a midfield that can not not only dominate the opposition but include players who possess the footballing brain and guile to create chances by unlocking packed defences.

Going bu Wilson's comments related to the QP game we made numerous chances but didn't take them which presumably a natural striker would do. It will be interesting to see his comments about yesterday's game with Ayr.

I dont recall to many occasion in the 60+ years of supporting the Jags when teams played league games against us and parked the bus. An interesting and challenging difference from last season.

Was about to post something similar. I think our difficulty in scoring is down to us being early favourites and teams generally being happy to draw with us. My recollection of Graham's goals were often from slick fast attacking moves, often on the counter. I don't see him scoring so many in games like yesterday.

Would be nice to be winning more comfortably, but out current points to games ratio is enough to win this league. I'm not too concerned.

Biggest concern for me is the lack of goalscorers in the team Samuel and Watt aren’t really strikers who are going to get 15/20 goals a season

Tony Watt’s best work is behind the central striker where he can influence the game , possibly as a no 10

Samuel works hard and possibly playing both of them together might make a difference

Play them together and who do you put on the bench ? They are unlikely to both last 90 mins

I trust Wilson to find a solution with the players we have got. There are goals in this team if we can get the midfield more involved

If that's the case then some communication from the club would help.

The Board have obviously invested heavily on the screen - given our limited financial resources they would not have done so without signing enough Contracts that the additional income ( over and above the existing income) covers the cost of the New Screen + additional revenue - no one in Business puts out large sums of Money on Spec these days.

I hope you’re right , we’ve got 2 strikers who scored 15 Championship goals between them last season , they both haven’t scored in the League this season.

Watched Ben Stanway yesterday and he looked miles off it and he contributed with goals last year .

No idea with Rico Diack was let go on loan with no replacement
