Stenny v PTFC - Tuesday 15th September

Now I see why St Mirren fans couldn't stand Smyth. Breezy evening on a hard plastic pitch slick with water - so what does Smyth do? Play shit3 lobbed balls with the outside of the boot that rolled out for a goal kick every bloody time (I counted six from him alone). Any player with more than two firing neurons would know that it wasn't working.

Major issue is that MW has been figured out tactically. We have sod-all through the middle of the pitch, so as long as you keep Drozd and Fitzy out of the game, you've essentially nullified our "attack." It isn't being helped by exemplifying what we already know: Stanway and Samuel hit a purple patch last season - but Championship is squarely their level; Watt is at least a stone too heavy with his best days way, way, way behind him; Crawford is Bryan Hodge incarnate; and Fitzy is probably wondering why he didn't just sign for St Mirren because he clearly can't be arsed here.

The tale of the tape last night was simple. Stenny have an experienced and competent goalkeeper while we simp for developing a child from another team. And, last week Stenny moved fast to sign another striker in Kargbo, while we stubbornly refuse to address the obvious deficit at the top end of the pitch.

Kargbo also gives them the Option of "Route 1" ~  when the pitches are Heavy during the Winter at opposing Grounds

Imo when you see the view from behind the goal it's a foul and if VAR was in operation it would have been disallowed. That aside we made more than enough chances to be ahead before they scored.

I was just to the right of the goal and, as a former keeper, I think he should have been coming right through everyone to clear the ball. He seemed to try and just catch the ball rather nonchalantly, the striker more forcefully attacking the ball. No foul for me and a similar thing happened earlier, this time the header off target (and that was from a smaller Stenny player).

Bring back Diack and give him the same kind of run that Watt and Samuel automatically get even though they score zilch and miss absolute sitters week after week!

Maybe a bit less time on Clyde Super Scoreboard ( the day after a defeat) & selling socks & a bit more time on core fitness -and shooting practice might be an idea

I think there needs to be some quite radical moves this Saturday in terms of the starting line-up. I think big Cale has done well, but I think Ashcroft will come back in. Either Henderson or Watt need to play in the No.10 role with Samuel also up-top at No.9. Would like to see Crawford dropped for Dempsey, and Stanway dropped for T.

Ingram must also be wondering what he needs to do. Reading/McPherson have been steady this season - but that is about it.

It was a poor result and makes Saturday against Raith a pretty important game this early in the season.

I don’t think we’ll be the last team to lose at Ochilview and a first defeat since January is no great disaster but it’s the performances in the last few weeks that we need to seriously improve on if we want to be pushing for the title.

Wilson seems to be struggling to find the best solution for the team.

Recruitment on the whole has been good but I do think we’ve overloaded in certain areas to the detriment of others. Macpherson and Ingram are two of our better players but both play right back. Throw in Cammy Logan and we effectively have 3 guys whose best position is at right back. Could that budget have been better spent elsewhere? An attacking mid or striker would have been more beneficial.

I get why we signed Ingram, he was great last season but he’s twiddling his thumbs on the bench at the minute because we can’t fit him and Ben in the team. I doubt he’s on a low wage either.

Watt and Samuel are both struggling and both seem to be carrying a bit of extra timber. I’m hoping the next few weeks will see us become far sharper but I’m not sure why they weren’t good to go from the off.

I’d say Dempsey and T might be due a start on Saturday and none of the midfield could grumble about being dropped.

Stanway has offered nothing on his return, he can only use lack of sharpness for so long.

Ashcroft will come in to deal with Oakley but after so long out that is a concern.

Plenty to ponder!

Plenty to ponder, indeed. So apologies for the selected quoting. In a way I'm glad to see Ben McP called up as it will give I'm assuming Ingram valuable game time. Logan (a better attacking option?) maybe called upon as a sub.

Difficult to argue, when we're so goal shy, that we're not over blessed in defence to the detriment of up top. I'd put that largely down to the time line over the summer. Stanway's late and to a degree unexpected signing probably put paid to a further quality signing in attack.

On the subject of Stanway I thought, perhaps contrary to most others, that he had a good/improved game on Tuesday night. Judging that mostly on his first half performance and don't think his substitution for the last quarter was unwarranted. Hope I'm right as he's obviously a key player.

Can’t argue with you on any points there. I’m probably being a bit unfair on Stanway, holding him to higher standards when he’s been no poorer than his midfield sidekicks who all had a full preseason.

I think you’re right, I think the Stanway saga tied our hands behind our back in a way. Wilson was probably reluctant to make any other signings when the possibility of Ben resigning was still there.

Perhaps starting Smyth and Dempsey slightly deeper on Saturday with Stanway further forward will get us clicking again.

We have not looked god since the start of the season except vs Livi & Hibs

we struggled to beat bottom of the table Morton have managed 1 point out 6 against the 2 promoted teams both away from home which is not championship winning  form

Think all Jags fans are concerned on how we have no back up strikers to solve our lack of goals

it will need to be sorted  very soon or our season will go flat very quickly

With regards to the Raith game it will be a first in terms of the ref as it is 24 year old Cameron Stirling taking charge. He was the ref for the last Friday night game (Morton v Livingston) and I had just switched it on as he was leading the teams out and my first thought was "does his mother know he is out". Could not comment on his overall performance as the game did not really hold my attention. Must be highly thought of if he is getting Championship games at that age.

I am officially concerned about our early season form. We are not fulfilling the ‘favourites’ tag.

End of season form is more important.

That said, don’t want this to go on much longer, but if we can get the bad spell out the way now, and then be the form team then should set up a  good end to the season.

Separate, but I see Bartley and Lennon have been linked with Hibs. One would be good news for us, the other could bring another team into contention 😀

I think its more a case of all refs being moved up levels quickly as they need to use a load of refs for VAR in the premier league.

Roughly the same age as Willie Collum when he got his first SPL gig. So should be nothing to worry about there......
