chunky jag
What a crackin season the wee man is having in a team full of diddies, we must keep him if we've any ambition whatsoever, why haven't we offerred a new deal? It's risky for a player to wait until end of season and play russian roulette with the bosman system, what if he breaks his leg, he'll be out a job altogether, if we offerred him some security, say 2-3 year deal with say a £50,000 release clause for SPL clubs (been playing FM solidly this week) surely he'd sign on? I read a month or so ago that new deals were offered to a couple of players. I've yet to hear who they were or if they are going to sign them. Perhaps one of them was Cairney. Of the out of contract players, Cairney, O'Donnell and Paton would be top of my list to get signed on for next season.

uberteeb
He will go unfortunately, if he is not tied to a club he'll get a couple of offers from lower SPL clubs and improve massively on what will be a pitiful wage, if he re-signs with us he will remain on a pish wage, will be less likely to move and will be playing 1st Division football next season. Alan Murray
We will probably lose Paton, Cairney and Sinclair in the summer. The money we will get for Sinclair will be used to plug holes in the budget so Jackie again will have to look around for cheap options to replace these players. Good to Lindsey getting his first game for Brechin the other night, though Jamie Campbell seams to be struggling at Stenhousemuir, which is surprising given he has looked good for us. Hopefully he will start to show this form soon.

GrantB
I'd be gutted if Cairney does a Harkins and signs for another 1st division club. I've no problem with a guy that has given good service to us leaving to play a higher level of football though. Hope we can keep him though. Armand2
It has been an amazing turnaround for him. This time last year I wouldn't have batted an eyelid if he'd been freed, such was his performances. But he has lost weight, improved his fitness and is showing the talent we all saw in his first season with us. I've got a feeling Cairney will still be a Thistle player next season. All logic points towards him departing but, call me crazy, I think he'll sign a new deal. I hope... chunky jag
Having not been at a game since November, I'm not 100% qualified to comment, but I'm amazed yet again to see someone think Paton will step up from us, I just don't see it. Then again, if Buchanan and Boyle can get in the SPL you can't write anything off, but who would be looking at Paton and why? I raised a point in the "Just In" thread that I think Paton is totally wasted in the middle of the park. If he gets a move, it'll be because of his form as a right-back; as a midfielder, he's bog ordinary. End of the day this is Cairneys living and if someone offers him twice what he's on jere whether in our league or not him like you or me would take it, after all this is what put food on his table, and i couldnt blame any player at our level doing the same
MerryHell
For all I think Cairney has improved massively this season, he has only shown the player he can be in THIS Thisle team. I think we've got a good group of players that compliment each other well. I do think a lot of this is down to McNamara - I know money talks but I really do hope that some players will see that they could achieve their potential within this squad and be put out to pasture at a 'bigger' club. That saying, I would move employer for a substantial wage rise, so i'm not going to judge anyone badly for leaving for that reason. IMO, Cairney just doesn't have the pace to be the player that his brain probably has the potential to be. It's this lack of pace that I think will put off SPL clubs, meaning I can only see us losing him to another first division team.

So you have NEVER seen Paton play in his new role as sweeper or in midfield, yet are happy to come on here and share your wisdom? I disagree with Armand in his various posts around the forum, where he states that he is unhappy with PP. I respect his opinion, however - because at least he has seen him play! Man, it's like me at work the other day - I was going on about what a wenk Bruce Willis used to be, and how awful all the "Die Hard" films are. After a colleague reminded me that I had admitted to never having actually watched any of the films, though, I kinda had to shut the fk up and concede that I was talking out my erse... Jaggernaut
Cairney can't jump for peanuts, and he has next to no pace. But he's been my favourite Jags player by some distance this season. Fantastic attitude, gets tore in, and scoring regularly. A few more like him in the team and we might be pushing for promotion instead of just making up the numbers.

I disagree with Armand in his various posts around the forum, where he states that he is unhappy with PP. I respect his opinion, however - because at least he has seen him play! Don't worry about it mate, I've probably saw Paton in a Thistle shirt over 100 times, I don't need you or anyone else to validate my entitlement to comment on someone, I admitted I hadn't seen him in his new role, but having seen him in his dayjob of right back, and having established he's a very ordinary limited first division footballer at best, I very much doubt his move to midfield equals the genius in Davie Irons getting moved back to centre half back in the 90s. Having seen him play as an extremely mediocre lower half first division right back for 3-4 seasons, and watched our results coinciding with his change of position, I don't see why anyone would be looking at him. I'll hopefully be back at firhill soon, and if I'm wrong and there's this new, improved footballer who touches the ball with his left foot in 90 minutes, I will admit to being wrong. That is, if I'm allowed to come on and share my wisdom as I will only have been at one game, will that be ok? To continue using your example, I think you would have been qualified to comment had you seen Die Hard 1 + 2, thought they were crap, and couldn't see what difference another one would do? Kinda like my view on Paton, wherever you put him, same limitations, nowhere near resembles a premier league footballer. But like I say, Buchanan and Boyle are in SPL so you all could be right and he'll be at Ross County or somethin next season. Jaggernaut
According to tonight's Times JM has made Cairney an offer for next season, but PC is biding his time before deciding: http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk:80/sport/paul-stalls-on-deal-but-star-is-still-a-happy-jag-1.1149588
1 John Lambie
I was getting tired of Paton at RB, but at CM he is good. I'd be happy to have him in there again next season, plus he can cover RB if needed, which is good for a small squad.
daxington preamble
As far as I'm concerned Paul Cairney could spend the rest of the season standing in front of the Jackie Husband Stand flicking us the vicks and wiping his great hairy arse with pages torn from Robert Reid's History of Thistle and still he'd be the player of the season. By all accounts he's on a rotten wage, i'd be happy to see him move on and earn what he deserves - he's served us very well, and will always be remembered as a Jags legend by me at least. BTW - slagging Paul Paton is like sooooooooo 2010! OMG soooooo embarassed for you!!
