  6. Would it not be possible to go via Edinburgh without getting a rail replacement bus? I realise it would take longer but to be honest I'm not fussed about time if it means I can avoid the bus, much prefer the train.

Sadly no, its a bus service dundee to perth too....the only trains running out of perth are to inverness as its heading away from the affected zone

Annoying for me as I as often as not take the train from Alloa. So I'm going be put out for our next two home games.

eta thanks for info, Thomas :thumbsup2:

It is, it would be bus to grahamston then into glasgow via cumbernauld

  7. Just to let any fans travelling to Perth on the 28th that there are alterations to train services that day, from next weekend for the folling 4 weekends only, no trains are running via Stirling due to the station being closed for re-signalling and re-laying of lines.

Buses will replace trains between Queen St-Larbert-Perth as all Aberdeens are re-routed via Inverkeithing to Dundee

Best way to check extended travel times is on National Rail Enquiries, or drop me a PM with the time u think of leaving at

  8. A "Pass Comm"? Is that what we oldies would call the communication cord? :happy2:

    Speaking of oldies.....

as I understand it, my concession card gets me a 10 mile journey for £1:30 flat fare.

Does that mean 10 miles only from my "home" station or can I re-book 10 miles away for the next 10 at £1:30?

I.e. if I want to go Glasgow - Edinburgh

do I just have to buy the full priced day return or is there a way of getting a concession price for us over 60s? :secret:

Just thought I'd ask, Thomas, you being in the trade and all that.

You can....its 10mile from where you board, but just ask for another on the train after that expires....spt hate us selling split tickets...but who cares if it saves money

  9.

I would guess, also, that the driver will get a bollocking for stopping in a neutral zone. :frantic:

If it was a 320 or a 318, like 156s and 158s when the pass comm is pulled the train automatically stops, if it was a 334 then the driver can talk to the person activating the pass comm as with the 170s

  10. I know they sent another train in to assist, but im not sure how it works with the electrics and neutral zones, i work diesels so wed get terminated, at the nearest station to de train passengers then sent in to tie up and recover the failed train....so far ive never been involved in a failure either way (probably will at some stage)

  11. Not 100% sure, but from what i heard the failed train was in a neutral section at finneston jn, which is as it sounds, no power to the train, these are all over the network and 90% of the time you dont really know your going through one.

  12. I was caught right in the middle of this. It took me about an hour to get from Glasgow Central to Anniesland this evening. <_<

After being turfed off the train at Anderston I attempted to circumvent the problem by catching another train at Charing Cross. I thought the other line might have been unaffected but I hadn't realised where the train had broken down.

It is amazing how much chaos just one broken down train can cause. This all comes after yesterday's points failure. Of course, I could comfortably write what I know about driving trains on the back of a postage stamp, but it just amazes me.

If youre stuck for half an hour and on a weekly or a normal day ticket you can get 50% of the leg of the journey back, if it was over an hour u can get 100% back....pick up a form at a manned station

If you have a monthly or greater season ticket, you get 20% back of the leg of the journey

  13. For anyone travelling just now, broken down train at Finneston Jn, affecting all routes on the low levels via queen st and central

If you have a valid ticket, can be used on any first bus route and subway between partick and st enoch/buchanan st

  14. Another split ticket doen the east coast is

    Edinburgh-Dunbar/Dunbar-Berwick then Berwick-Newcastle

Its all about changing the ticket from open return (SOR) to Day Returns(SDR) or Saver Return(SVR)

You can get SuperSavers (SSR - england and wales) and SuperOffPeaks (SOP -Scotland), these are not valid before 0915 mon-fri, nor saturdays during july, august and selected dates in december.

If anyone wants me to check prices give me a few days-a week or two notice and ill look up the prices, however i cant look up advance as our machines cant do them.

Another wee tip if you travel a lot, joing loyalty advance, you get free 1st class upgrade at weekends, and offers during the year, just now its 2 returns for £25 off peak and 1st class sleeper for £99.

Not seen or heard about any deals with papers or supermarkets (yet)

  15. Split tickets - best stations to buy to are as follows

Glasgow - Perth for north to Inverness

Glasgow - Perth, Perth - Dundee (also for heading to Aberdeen)

Glasgow - Inverkeithing if your travelling to Edinburgh and staying over....works out just under £5 cheaper than 2 singles

These work as the tickets become day returns instead of open returns

Join Loyalty Advance, you get free 1st class upgrades at weekends

  16. Railtrack as a private company failed - Network Rail is now effectively state run and is not for profit. It works better than the private version.

National Express East Coast failed - East Coast is run by the state and is making a profit. It works better than the private version. (Although for nonsense ideological reasons the Tories now want to privatise it again).

These examples you provide show show clear reasons why the whole network should be taken back under public ownership.

Are you stupid? The whole point of this thread was to discuss providing better public transport (mainly trains) for all football supporters. And yes I do agree with it. I absolutely agree with running public transport for the benefit of the public, in this specific example, football supporters. I would be at Dingwall right now if it wasn't for the fact that if I rock up to the train station today it will cost me £63.10 return.

Buying on the day is always dearer as youre buying either an Open Return, or maybe a Saver Return to these destinations, hence the idea of Advances.....however split tickets are the way, and the rule about changing trains on them are there to be ignored.

Return Queen St-Perth £15,70, Return Perth-Dingwall £35.40 - total on the day £51.10 bit cheaper but not as cheap as advances
