I'm not happy. Never have been and never will be.

But because "Most Jags Fans are happy" I am to be silenced and not allowed to have an opinion.

Never thought I would say this, but I am so glad that Boris/Nicola run the country rather than you.

Who would you rather have and would they be doing a better job? Bottom line is the team's performance whether we like the manager or not is largely irrelevant.

I've no idea how we would know. What I do know is if you repeat something often enough, whether true or false, then a considerable amount of folk will be convinced.

I think someone mentioned it on another thread, gerrybritton9 maybe?

Last night was the best perfromance I've seen from a thistle team since St Johnstone away in January 2018. Caldwell got his formation and tactics exactly right.

Playing 4 at the back with 2 wingers and Gordon in the number 10 slot behind the striker worked really well.

Gordon was in such a forward position was a revelation last night, Harkins strolled the game and McGinty dominated in the air. Elliot defended really well and didn't jump into tackles. We actually had a functioning balanced midfield last night which has been posted missing all season.

Special mention would go to Spittal. Versus his Alloa his efforts to compete for the ball in either tackles or headers was weak. When he came off the bench last night he was clearly very fired up and fully committed to all tackles.

If Caldwell continues to deliver this type of formation, tactics and performance he will change my opinion of him.

Yes the team was really up for it and gave everything for the full 90 minutes. No question marks over fitness.

I wonder if we had sneaked a win yesterday how much of the above posts would have flooded in? Small margins. It will be like this every single game. That game in hand IS vital also.

Or if Falkirk had lost.  One positive out of their win may be that Ayr won't have much to play for as now pretty much safe in the top 4.

Will make belated attempt at quick summing up of how the team played. To be fair on all of us who attended and have not posted, it was a difficult game to report on, as much of it was thoroughly unmemorable. A shallow shelving end stand means that you are quite far away from the pitch to start with, and the way the game panned out almost all of the action was at the far end and consequently difficult to see.

In the first half Inverness had an attack that lasted far longer than it should have, as we kept presenting the ball back to them until Hazard finally gathered a bouncing long range shot which could have been awkward. In the second half Storey broke into the box and had a clear sight of goal but was closed down and blocked off before he could pull the trigger. And that was about it in terms of the major action we saw close up.  The result was everything on Saturday. It was nothing like the classic 4-0 demolition of a then very strong Inverness team, with Ryan Stevenson and Gary Fraser leading the way, or even the 3-2 win with the Buchanan double and Archie's goal of the century, running the length of the pitch with two 1-2s and slotting the ball home, before the team had to hang on as a sickness bug led to players dropping like flies. I could probably even now remember more of these two games than what happened a couple of days ago.

Hazard was solid, although I would like to see him claiming more crosses. He did not have any difficult saves to make, and had no chance with the goal.

Elliot was combative, covered well for other players and made one superb crunching tackle. He might have done more to stop the cross for the goal, but that is perhaps being  a bit harsh.

Penrice was again in timid mode and even though he was a wing back with less defensive duties, he was still not attacking the box and the byeline  with the elan he was showing earlier in the season. Was unlucky that conceding possession at the corner flag led to a goal at the other end, but very lucky that his misjudged header at the death confused the Inverness striker who let the ball bounce off him to safety. However, bonus points for managing to slip some dry humour about Christie Elliott into his pre-match Jagzone interview!

Anderson was the epitome of the experienced and commanding centre back and it was impressive how in his first game he could take control of the situation and talk everyone else through. His goal was a welcome bonus and assuming that his fitness will improve to enable him to last 90 minutes, the only concern would be his lack of pace. Just not sure if he could be so effective as one of two rather than three centre backs, and that might limit our options if we wanted to field a more attacking formation.

Saunders and McMillan (like Anderson) are very reassuring and intelligent players. No doubt they are not perfect, but they seem less prone to the crazy goal-conceding mistakes that have dogged previous centre backs this season. All the defenders willing to take a booking for the team, so a certain level of streetwiseness, but of course you can only do that once each per game, and even then suspensions will come knocking.

Bannigan and Slater composed, and combined well for the first goal. Controlled the game first half, but seemed to fall out of things in the second half. There was a lengthy worrying period when we continually handed back possession, and perhaps we were looking for one, the other or both of them to step forward and keep the ball to close down the game  in the manner of Banzo's classic performance away against St Johnstone in the week before his serious injury.

McCarthy made a few tackles, though otherwise had little noteworthy impression on the game and could not improve the ball retention. Harkins took time to settle, but once he did he began to get on the ball and helped see out the last minute by running round 3 Inverness players.

Spittal was popping up all over the place in the first half and had a few attempts at goal. Cannot remember seeing much of him in the second half but I am sure that he was grafting away in the manner he has done of late.

Fitzpatrick took his goal brilliantly and did really well not to foul the Inverness player who lost control of the ball. He also set up Spittal well in the first half. Otherwise he was fairly quiet, but you always feel that when he bursts into the action he is going to achieve something.  Storey was his normal self, a few mazy runs with  little end product. In the second half, neither forward player was able to keep the ball down the other end of the park for any length of time.

Reading it back, the above sounds a bit more negative than it is meant to be. There were no outstanding performances, but there was plenty to appreciate, especially in the first half. The second half was uninspiring but the team held together. Job done and done well, but no reason to get carried away.

Fantastic to celebrate an away victory, and that long dark journey down the A9 is totally transformed by the warm glow of success.

Are you having a go at people who went to the game because they aren't writing a match report for you?

No I'm not having a go at anyone. Usually 3 or 4 people who were at the game volunteer their views on who played well who didn't etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is interested in this. I don't expect a full match report personalised for me.

Would be good to hear a review of the game from anyone in attendance.

Still not seen one. What's the point of this thread if those of us not able to go to the game can't find out how the team played?

I don't think anyone disagrees that many of Archibald's decisions were poor in the last 12-18 months.

I would say that, as I recall it, after our first season in the Premier league it was pretty much only Archibald who thought it was worth retaining Lawless. He hadn't had an effective season, and most (on this forum certainly) were surprised when he was given another deal, with many being unhappy about it (waste of a wage etc.). That turned out to be a good decision at the time.

We also don't know why Lawless left (well I don't). Maybe he, perfectly understandably, did not want to take the drop in wages that Doolan and Erskine were prepared to take (even if he wanted to stay). He did, after all, find employment with another Premier side.

I thought he said he hadn't been offerred anything. Could be wrong.  Wish he was still with us.

Absolutely spot on. Erskine is only 31 and should be able to play at this level for another 2/3 years.

Not convinced by the signings so far. I get that others think they are improvements on what we let go but those we let go weren't playing (Quitongo, Storer) and the ones we signed weren't setting the heather on fire at clubs around us

Harkins - QOS fans weren't to upset about him going, Cardle - Dunfermline thought he did well but his time was up, Hazard - Falkirk weren't desperate to resign him, Saunders - couldn't get a game for Livi.

So far I'm not really seeing anything that massively improves our starting 11.

I don't see where Harkins fits into the current system when we have such a lightwieght midfield. Hazard might be better than Sneddon but is he really experienced enough to see us through a relegation fight? Cardle being a left sided winger might provide more balance than fitzpatrick and its hard to believe that Saunders isn't a better option than Elliot or Keown so he perhaps those two might improve things slightly.

If Saunders was getting a game at Livi he wouldn't be interested in coming to us. Got to be cheaper and at least as good as Keown

I worry about some people on here ....

    1. The training centre is being built for us by the Weirs it is literally costing the club nothing

    2. We then lease the facility for the same amount we currently pay to use the various training arrangements we have

    3. The advantages of a dedicated trading centre with training, fitness, medical aspects etc should be fairly obvious

It’s  the best news we have in the current s### !

Maybe we should have started with the same 11 that finished last weeks game, rather than starting with the same 11 who lost the first half last week and lo and behold lost the first half today.

This. Started with the same team as last week and the same situation at half time - what a surprise.

It is a bit difficult to win that argument given that the tactics/strategy used did actually win the game.

Maybe we would have been ahead at half time with Sammon on from the start. A one goal lead with 20 minutes to go is not a situation which would fill  most Jags fans with confidence I would suggest. Anyway the main thing is we got the win.

Sammon coming on helped change the game. That doesn't mean because a substitute is effective the manager was wrong in his team selection.  in fact it would probably be more than a bit risky playing that narrow from the start.

In a must win game I would argue that you have to take a risk

That's a poor poor substitution Archie.

Now we go long ball for the rest of the game, which Hamilton will be delighted about.

Totally wrong here.  It changed the game, Sammon should have started. We didn't go long ball and nice play to the feet of him an a number of occasions.

Haven't heard the Abdul interview but I didn't see much of a change of shape. They did press higher, go for more first balls instead of just picking up the second balls and generally push forward more.  I'm maybe being a tad pedantic as they certainly played with a different attitude.  Re Woods & Osman it's hard to say if it was fitness/tiredness, just poorer play or a combination of both but I agree about their 2nd half performances (more so as the game wore on). Very noticeable as I though both were on top of their games in the first half.

It would have been interesting if he'd been asked if he thought fitness was an issue with the team but maybe those sort of questions are too controversial.
