    • Thistle would match their H2H club-record (set in 1934 and matched in 1997) with a 5th straight home win over the Honest Men.

    06.08.2013 Ayr United [h] W2-1 (League Cup 1st Round)
    21.02.2012 Ayr United [h] W4-2 (SFL First Division - game 23)
    17.09.2011 Ayr United [h] W4-0 (SFL First Division - game 6)
04.09.2010 Ayr United [h] W2-1 (Challenge Cup Quarter Final)

In other news, absolutely no way could a different teenager could score for a third consecutive match. Over to you Andy McCarthy or Callum Wilson...

I'll leave the stats to TJR but Fitzpatrick scoring on his competitive debut at 17 year and 4 months approx must be one for the record books.

Tam O'Ware plays in Fitz and starts.

That's my gag done for this year, thank you.

Aidan's first touch was exquisite I thought.

Discounting own goals and unknown scorers, the great Jaggy database has confirmed ages for 75.8 % of our scorers since 1876, which is pretty decent I think. Bearing that in mind…

Ian McDonald is the youngest known Jag to have scored on his debut, and did so aged 16y, 7m, 4d on Wednesday, 30th July, 1975, in a 4-0 friendly win away to Ross County.

The youngest known to have scored on his competitive debut was John Campbell, who did so aged 16y, 10m, 9d, on Saturday, 11th August, 1894, in a 5-2 win at home to Dundee Wanderers in the SFL Second Division.

Last night, Aidan Fitzpatrick became the second youngest Jag known to have scored on his competitive debut.

In the overall picture, Aidan is the 13th youngest man known to have scored for the Jags.

    7 DEBUTANTS

    • Thistle's 144th season kicks-off a just 49 days after the last one ended. It's the 6th shortest close-season in the club's history. The class of 2018 don't have it as bad as their predecessors from 1951, who had a mere 32 days between official season-to-season engagements.
    • For only the second time in history, Thistle's season opens on a Sunday after having closed on a Sunday. The only other such occurrence? The summer of 1971. We all know what happened next ; - )
    • Evan Galasso makes his Thistle debut.
    • 20-year-old Jack Storer makes his Thistle debut.
    • 21-year-old trialist Arlen Birch plays his one and only game for Thistle and, following Maurice Parry way back in 1909, he becomes just the second Welshman known to have played for the Magyars.
    • 24-year-old Sean McGinty makes his Thistle debut.
    • 24-year-old Craig Slater makes his Thistle debut.
    • 25-year-old Tam O'Ware makes his Thistle debut. He becomes the first player since John Baird (2013) to join our scoring debutants club.
    • 25-year-old Aaron Lennox makes his Thistle debut.

    14.07.2018 Stenhousemuir [a] W2-0 (League Cup Group E - game 1)

    EXTRAORDINARY 21st CENTURY RUN CONTINUES

    • 20-year-old Shea Gordon makes his Thistle debut and, at just a little after 3:01pm, scores the first goal of the senior domestic Scottish football season.
    • Jeezo, you wait 5 years for one, and then two come along in a week! Following Tam O'Ware last Sunday, Shea becomes the newest member of our scoring debutants club. Going one better than Tam, he becomes the first player since Steven Craig (2012) to net a brace on his debut.
    • Although goal timings remain unknown for a handful of candidates, Shea's debut brace, at less than 6 minutes after the kick-off, is now the quickest on record for any Thistle player. He smashes the previous record held by Thomas Paterson [ii] who reportedly netted twice within half-an-hour of his debut in 3-2 defeat away to Port Glasgow Athletic back in August, 1895!
    • With his 2 goals, Shea, amazingly, jumps straight in at joint # 1 in our all-time scorers chart vs. Stenhousemuir! At the summit, he joins Jimmy Kinloch (1927-1927), Andy Kerr (1959-1959), Jimmy Bone (1970-1970), Martin Hardie (2000-2000), Paul McGrillen (2001-2001) and Leigh Hinds (2004-2004).
    • Aaron Lennox (substituted) and Jamie Sneddon (substitute) both register their first clean-sheets for Thistle. It's the first time 2 Thistle goalkeepers have kept their first clean-sheet in the same competitive match. Previously, Billy Thomson and Jim Herriot had the unique disctinction of jointly registering their first clean-sheets together, both men featuring in a 2-0 friendly win over Vejle Boldklub back in March, 1975.
    • The attendance of 675 is our second lowest on record for an opening day competitive fixture. To find a lower crowd, you need to rewind back to the days when competitive games made up a very small part of the fixture card. On Saturday, 2nd October, 1880, an estimated 300 witnessed our inaugural Scottish Cup tie - a 1-0 win away to Jordanhill in the Scottish Cup.
    • Jags are now on a H2H record run of 6 consecutive competitive wins versus Stenny, 2001 to date.
    • Thistle are aiming to remain unbeaten in the group stages of the League Cup in a fourth consecutive campaign, and are now on a club-record run of 15 games unbeaten, 1982 to date.
    • Thistle remain unbeaten in all opening day competitive fixtures this century, an astonishing 19 game run which stretches from 2000 to date.

    17.07.2018 Greenock Morton [h] W2-1 (League Cup Group E - game 2)

FIRST-TIME SCORERS WIN THE 3 POINTS

    • 31-year-old Cammy Bell makes his Thistle debut.
    • Jack Storer scores his first goal for Thistle. Even this early, his 30-yard screamer looks odds-on to be the goal-of-the-season!
    • James Penrice scores his first goal for Thistle, and it proves to be the match winner. At 19y, 6m, 25d, he's the youngest player to score for the Jags in competitive action since Stephen O'Donnell (19y, 4m, 19d) netted in a 5-0 League win against (strangely enough) Greenock Morton on 30th September, 2011.

    ongoing sequences:

    • 12 consecutive competitive appearances for Blair Spittal, 31st Mar 2018 to date. (Longest run since: Baily Cargill - 19 games; 23rd Jan 2018 to 20th May 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
    • 16 League Cup group games without defeat, 14th Aug 1982 to date. (A new club-record.)
    • 49 games since back-to-back League wins, 11th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 71 games; 16th Apr 2013 to 14th Mar 2015. Club-record: 77 games; 2nd Nov 1912 to 5th Dec 1914.)

ARCHIBALD'S TAME THISTLE SIDE DESERVEDLY RELEGATED

    • The biggest gathering of Partick Thistle supporters in 5 years bears witness to just how woefully ineffective Alan Archibald's Thistle have become.
    • Thistle's yellow card count rises to a massive 88 for season 2017-18, certainly the highest figure in 21 years, and possibly the highest figure ever.
    • Conor Sammon's 100% spot-kick record comes to an end, his lame stoppage-time effort now leaving him with a rather ordinary 75% success ratio.
    • Kris Doolan, with 11 goals, becomes the first Thistle player in history to finish as top competitive scorer in 5 successive seasons.
    • Thistle finished with a measly 1.02 goals-per-game in League and Cup action in 2017-18 (49 in 48), the club's 5th lowest scoring ratio of all-time.
    • Thistle lose for the 25th time in competitive action in 2017-18, the 7th highest tally of all-time and the most horrendous total since the abysmal season of 2003-04.
    • Thistle gain the ignominious distinction of being the first Scottish top-flight club to lose both legs of the play-offs Final.
    • Thistle become the first Scottish club to be relegated twice from the top-flight via the play-offs.
    • Partick Thistle are relegated for the tenth time in their history, and will now seek to be promoted for the eleventh time. 5 times out of 9 the club have bounced back at the first time of asking.

    league stats:

    • Thistle finished with 0.816 goals-per-game in this season's League (31 in 38), the second worst ratio of all-time. Doolan's goal in the final match at Dens Park prevented a new club-record from being set.
    • Thistle failed to score in 44.74% of their League games (17 out of 38), the highest failure to score ratio of all-time. 17 is a joint club-record with the tally set in the 42 game campaign of 1920-21.
    • Thistle lost 15 League games to nil in 2017-18, a tally which matches the all-time record which was set in the 36 game campaign of 1995-96.
    • Thistle's goal difference (-30) registers as the second worst since the criteria was introduced in season 1970-71, with the figure from 1995-96 (-33) remaining as the club's record low.
    • Thistle finished with a paltry 11 goals away from home in the 19 League games this season. You need to rewind all the way back to 1912-13 to find the one and only time there was a lower total (7 in 17).

    ongoing sequences:

    • 19 consecutive competitive appearances for Baily Cargill, 23rd Jan 2018 to date. (Longest run since: Ryan Edwards - 35 games; 8th Aug 2017 to 3rd Apr 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)

DOOLAN CLOSING IN ON YET ANOTHER CLUB-RECORD

    • 45-year-old Craig Thomson takes charge of his final game in senior Scottish football.
    • Baily Cargill registers his first assist as a Jag.
    • Kris Doolan nets his 11th competitive goal of 2017-18 and moves ahead of Conor Sammon (10) in the battle to finish as top scorer this term. The number nine is striving to become the first Thistle player in history to finish as top competitive scorer in FIVE successive seasons.
    • For the return leg, Thistle's most recent home record vs. Livingston bodes well, the last 10 reading: W8 D1 L1.
    • Thistle are now bidding to become the third side to recently overturn a first leg deficit in a Top-Flight play-off final, following on from Hamilton Academical (2014) and Kilmarnock (2016). Let's hope the bi-yearly cycle continues…

    ongoing sequences:

    • 18 consecutive competitive appearances for Baily Cargill, 23rd Jan 2018 to date. (Longest run since: Ryan Edwards - 35 games; 8th Aug 2017 to 3rd Apr 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)

    Mind. Blown. :o

  11. No finesse and little insight attached, but here's a list of Thistle's average starting elevens in competitive action from the last 50 or so seasons. 98.4% of birth dates are known from the period, any that are not have been ignored in such a way as not to skew the averages in any way.

In contrast to Archie's ever-rising ages, both McParland and Auld generally kept their (low) average ages steady. Lambie's preference was for the seasoned campaigner, but MacLeod seemed to pay the price for following the "Golden Oldies" strategy. The McCall / Macnamara era saw the average age drop dramatically,

Cannot get that Bon Jovi song out of my head now.

But for some reason I keep singing it as "Livingston...A Prayer".

Och, baws. I'll be singing that 'til Monday noo. :(

Re our first-ever play-off match, I'm not sure how many were in the annual promotion/relegation ballot in 1897-98 (there were Thistle, St Bernard's, Clyde and Kilmarnock at least) but it'd be common for several sides to be vying for the vote, and in this particular season, the Top 3 in the ballot would gain/retain top-flight status. Sometimes they didn't even adhere to the expected cut-off points for automatic re-election process; there are several instances of mid-table lower league clubs or even non-League clubs being cherry-picked to join the annual ballot for promotion/relegation/admission. Does your face fit/are you in the masons? Whaur dae ye bide? Can yer team mak' a good fist o' it? Have you got enough money to cover the away team's guarantee? These were the concerns. Thankfully, Thistle had proven themselves in many of these ways, and were never in serious danger of failing the re-election process on this particular occasion; the play-off game in March 1898 was a bit of a box-ticking exercise.

This is how I wrote about it in the Willie Paul story:

In terms of the League, the Scottish Sport’s rallying call from 12 months earlier came back to haunt us, although we very nearly escaped the dreaded “re-election zone” – just another solitary point would have ensured an outright 7th place finish. Somewhat miraculously, Dundee pulled off an unlikely victory against title-chasing Rangers on the last day of the season to catch Thistle. With Dundee and Thistle therefore locked in joint 7th, the SFL committee deemed a play-off necessary, to decide which of the two would be put forward for re-election.

Dundee agreed to play the game at Meadowside where a bigger gate was expected. Way back in September, Thistle, with a Willie Paul goal, had defeated Dundee 3-1 at Meadowside. Alas, there was to be no repeat performance, and Thistle failed to take home advantage, losing by 2 goals to 0, our third competitive defeat at the hands of the Dundonians this season.

For the second season running, our status as a Top-Flight club was dependent on the votes of our fellow Scottish League member clubs.

Our destination was settled on Monday 30th May 1898 at the Scottish Football League’s AGM held in the chambers at West Regent Street. Much to the disappointment of Kilmarnock, the Second Division champions, the status-quo in the First Division was maintained – all at Meadowside could breathe a sigh of relief. Interestingly, a motion from Celtic that, in future, the bottom two in the First Division should retire in favour of the first two in the Second Division was carried unanimously. At some point in the forthcoming 12 months this was clearly rescinded as automatic promotion / relegation was only first introduced in season 1921-22 – a whole quarter-century later!

  13. Superb interview with Doolan on Jagzone.

    Oozing confidence.

Should be the first name on the teamsheet every time - don't give me no over-thought bollox about physicality, out balls or age.

Doolan was putting himself up (and scoring) against hard bruisers in the Juniors when he still a school boy, and he's in peak condition right here, right now.

My impression is that he will do everything to remain in great shape for years to come; next season's team should be getting built around him.

    12.05.2018 Dundee [a] W1-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 38)
    SUPREME CLUB-RECORD FOR KRIS DOOLAN

    • Kris Doolan becomes the first Thistle player in history to register a double figures competitive goals tally in EIGHT consecutive seasons, overtaking Jimmy Walker's 64-year-old record of 7-in-a-row. Remarkably, the legendary #9 has done so with a mere 51.7% of game time in 2017-18.
    • Kris's strike is his 6th against Dundee in competitive action - only George Smith (8, 1954-1959) has scored more often against the Dark Blues.
    • Rather impressively, Thistle have managed to pick up at least 1 booking in all 19 of their away League games this season. Never let it be said that Miles Storey doesn't contribute!
    • Thistle win to nil away from home in the League for the first time in over 15 months, the last such occurrence being a 1-0 win at… Dens Park!
    • There are now 9 competitive games without a draw between these two, a run which stretches from 16th January, 2016, to date.
    • Alan Archibald wins his 50th top-flight game as manager. In that particular wins table, he's chasing down 5th placed Bertie Auld's tally of 65.
    • Nominated by Stuart Cosgrove, Ian McCall and Graham Speirs, Thistle are voted "team of the day" by Radio Scotland's "Off The Ball" listenership. The show plays out with "we're halfway there, oh-ho, Livin' On A Prayer"!

  17. Agree Archie has got to take a long, hard look in the mirror in the next couple of weeks.

If the job is too much aggravation for him, or if it's making him miserable, he should resign.

Deep down, my own gut feeling is that he CAN still lead the club onwards - he's certainly no dud and he can rise again - but the lack of acknowledgement about things is a big concern for me.

He needs to come out with some talk that can rally the troops; instead of the constant chin tickling on Jagzone, how about some straight talking about the problems? Such an interview will never take place of course. The one time Michael Max asked him a tricky question this season he near got his head snapped off.

Alan, your players simply haven't performed for you this season. Why do you think that is?

Are there any lessons that you've learned from this season's abject failure?

Many Thistle fans are of the opinion that a massive clear out is required this summer. What do you think about that? What plans do you have for next season's squad?

Do you plan on doing things differently to try and get better results next season?

Are you confident you're still the right man for the job at Firhill? Do you have a message for the big number of Thistle fans that want to see you sacked?

    08.05.2018 Motherwell [h] L0-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 37)
    ANOTHER CLUB-RECORD FOR ARCHIE'S DUDS

    • With an average age of 28y, 6m, 29d, this starting line-up resets the bar as the oldest of Alan Archibald's managerial career. You need to rewind back to February, 2011, to find an older Thistle team.
    • Remarkably, the Thistle vs. Motherwell fixture has delivered 14 competitive games without a repeated outcome (04.10.2014 to date).
    • Alan Archibald's Thistle lose to nil for the 15th time in this season's League campaign, duly matching the all-time club-record which was set by Murdo MacLeod's side in 1995-96.
    • For only the second season in the last 103 years, Thistle have failed to win back-to-back League games. In all that time, the only other Thistle side to have returned this tragic stat were Archie's Jags themselves in season 2013-14.
    • Thistle, with only ONE away League win in the last FIFTEEN months, and not a SINGLE away clean-sheet in 2018, travel to Dens Park on Saturday knowing that if Ross County win at McDiarmid Park, we must also win to avoid finishing bottom of the League and being automatically relegated.

    ongoing sequences:

    • 7 competitive games without an away win, 3rd Feb 2018 to date. (Longest run since: 10 games; 19th Aug 2017 to 23rd Dec 2017. Club-record: 26 games; 28th Nov 1908 to 28th Aug 1909.)
    • 15 competitive games without a clean-sheet away from home, 4th Nov 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 16 games; 14th Oct 1989 to 25th Aug 1990. Club-record: 89 games; 31st Oct 1885 to 23rd Jan 1897.)
    • 16 consecutive competitive appearances for Baily Cargill, 23rd Jan 2018 to date. (Longest run since: Ryan Edwards - 35 games; 8th Aug 2017 to 3rd Apr 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
    • 48 games since back-to-back League wins, 11th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 71 games; 16th Apr 2013 to 14th Mar 2015. Club-record: 77 games; 2nd Nov 1912 to 5th Dec 1914.)

If he keeps us up (big if) he will be the third manager in our history to retain top league status for 5 or more seasons, that’s an amazing statistic particularly when you consider the top league used to be much bigger than it is now.

Not true. That stat was based on finishing in the Top 10 5-seasons-in-a-row and his side have blown chance after chance to make it happen.

A  study has said the sadness felt after your football team losses lasts twice as long as the joy felt after a victory,so it says it is not logical to be a football fan.

Ah, I was wondering why this season felt 3 times longer than last!

4 years ago today we beat Hearts at Tynecastle to stay up. What's the highest attendance we've won in front of since that date? Guessing away to either Dundee or Dundee United?

14,059 that night. Biggest in-person audience for a Jaggy win since then was 6,517:
    28.02.2015 Dundee United [a] W2-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 27)

TJR, what are the corresponding stats for points lost from winning positions in the previous four seasons?

The 2017-18 figures come from my own data, the rest is lifted from transfermrkt for convenience; they're usually pretty good.

Needless to say, this season is the worst of the 5, mind you, everything is worse this season.
