  1. The legislation regarding vaccine passports is to apply to outdoor events with unseated crowds of 4,000+.  They will therefore not be relevant for any games at Firhill or any other sports venues in Scotland.

Perhaps people should take their own advice and not only read the legislation but read it properly and understand it before posting nonsense.

  2. A textbook example of a comfortable home win - Thistle looked like promotion contenders, Morton like relegation fodder.

After a bright start, we looked a bit pedestrian for the remainder of the first half though our defence was not tested as Morton posed no real threat. We needed more options out wide and I was expecting more from Foster & Tiffoney down the left...they came good right of the start of the second half and we closed out the game with the third.

Turner looks a good footballer - a bit light-weight but hits a mean corner...Holt had a fine game...and Banzo has the ability to play shrewd little passes to make space for team-mates. We seem to have good attacking options from the bench and are a team with a genuine threat of scoring goals.

Gordon did ok at right back but like all our full-back options he's not likely to make penetrating runs or put in great crosses. With McKenna out for a few weeks we are really short of cover at the back and with some tough League fixtures next month this could be a challenge.

It's good to have positive momentum at the club after some dismal seasons...the end of September will be the time to assess the progress we have made.

  3. It was good to be back at Firhill...and I welcomed the chance to boo Doncaster.

Queen of the South didn't look as if they will be one of the top teams in this Division but they had us pinned back and merited both their goals. We do look capable of scoring and we managed to do so at just the right times.

I don't think the structure of the side is right with the players available...5 at the back requires the full backs to be an attacking threat and I don't think McKenna or Foster fit the bill...though McKenna did have two assists.  Sneddon really should have saved the first goal,  Bell got away with 2 dreadful errors and I was disappointed with Docherty's contribution.

I would have liked to see us play higher up the pitch - we look to have a bit of invention but with no width, there were few options for Turner and Banzo.  Rudden seems to be a bit of a daftie but is a good partner for Graham...Tiffoney's pace and ability to take on defenders will be crucial.

So scope for improvement but potential too...and we're top of the League!

To be honest, gloating about how right you were on this case is a bit like gloating about predicting that we'd lose a game to Kilmarnock.

You called something that most people thought was a likely outcome, but everyone wanted to believe otherwise. Doesn't mean it was inevitable. Doesn't mean it wasn't worth turning up. Doesn't make you an expert.

    Absolutely spot on Allyo.

It is utterly cringeworthy to see WJ  hold himself out triumphantly as having some unique legal expertise and insight in calling an entirely predictable outcome. I stopped reading his posts after Lord Clark's judgement that the matter should go to arbitration by which time WJ had bored everyone with dozens of tedious posts on why our action would be thrown out immediately by the Court of Session...yet he completely failed even to mention in any of his posts the arbitration issue on which the matter was decided,

I don't think anyone actually expected a judgement to overturn our relegation. WJ's obnoxious and repetitive contributions have turned this Forum into a fairly miserable experience  - he is a vexatious poster...high on self-regard and low on self-awareness.

    When's your lunch break over?

If my place of work operated on the basis of arcane rules and procedures under a pretence of democracy with a craven deference to those in power and a sneering contempt for the lower orders, I don't think I would want to spend my lunch break tediously post-bombing every comment on the Thistle Supporters' Football Forum in support of the SPFL's position.

  6. Nesbit seemed to be a real prospect but his loan spells at both Ayr & Dumbarton were underwhelming and he himself apparently accepts that his attitude at Thistle was not good so I suppose there can be little criticism of the decision to release him at that time.

I didn't have an opinion of his ability because apart from a few minutes as an occasional substitute, I didn't ever see him play for Thistle. I do think it is a legitimate criticism of the Weir Academy and Scottish Football in general that young players with potential are not given a real chance in the first team.  Instead,  we gave regular starts to Ryan Stevenson  (talented but with poor application and not a striker), Pogba ( lumbering, lazy & useless), Azeez (fast, strong, hopeless finisher) and Myles Storey( got into great positions then messed up) plus a few other random almost forgotten guys like Nathan Eccleston. I don't think that lot scored much more than 10 goals amongst them.

I would much rather have seen a young Kevin Nesbit given the chance to see what he could do.

When is Firhill being repurposed as a vexatious litigation training camp and how do you qualify for the more advanced training at Tynecastle?

You don't understand what a vexatious litigant is - look it up in your legal textbooks.

On the first page of this thread, you claimed that a legal challenge was "utterly hopeless"...eminent QC's and a Court of Session Judge (real lawyers) have taken a different view. Now you think arbitration is futile...so what?

You took up pages lecturing us on how our court action would not succeed...but failed even to comment on the arbitration issue which was the reason our case also foundered in 2004. It's the equivalent of that Linesman signalling a throw in against Morton but missing Doolan's Ghost Goal.

Back in the 70's Thistle fans used to chant "Worse than East Fife" at any negative & boring  teams...when I see yet another supercilious post from you I think "Worse than Javeajag"

That last statement shows why comparing an independent Scotland to Norway isn’t a reasoned argument. Sadly Cultural wise they are at different spectrums.

We were asked to distance, and we did.

UK (and Scotland) had to have draconian measures enforced by the police, yet were still broken. Kelvingrove park and Botanical Gardens being 2 examples.

The day we announced bars were closing, people stayed away. The day UK announced the same the bars were mobbed with people try to get one last night out.

The 2 countries are similar in size, only 540 miles apart (Same distance as Aberdeen to London) yet miles apart culturally wise.

There has been overwhelming voluntary compliance with the Lockdown provisions in Scotland...police enforcement has been with a very light touch and was only required to deal with a few neds and dafties who wanted to get bevvied. People who went to Botanic Gardens remained socially distanced so it was no big deal.  The prevalence of Coronavirus in Scotland is currently a fifth of England where a less strict/shambolic attitude prevails. Someone on this thread even insisted we should align with the UK Government and rely on their "world beating"  contact-tracing app.

Not enforcing a strict Lockdown and relying on the good sense of the population doesn't seem to have worked out that well in Sweden.

Quote from Gary Dean's Falkirk Chairman

"One of the lowest points of my football experience was sitting a week past Sunday watching some of the clubs comment about how they were going to vote," Deans said.

"Some of the commentary that was coming through, why they were justifying no votes, was sickening."

Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at that meeting of, I assume, lower league chairmen. Would speculate that Hearts and Jags were the subjects of much abuse!

The interview was on Sportsound on Saturday. He said that from previous discussions  the 14- 10-10-10 had been a popular option but the reason many of the Clubs now gave for voting against Reconstruction was "Cash is King" - presumably they think Thistle & Falkirk in League 1 will be bring larger travelling supports. He said that one club who had put forward 14-10-10-10 in the initial Reconstruction Talks had  actually now voted against it.

He mentioned an angry conversation with another Chairman who was apparently raging at the Court Action. He pointed out that this was the only card Hearts & Thistle had been left to play and that the way to avoid that would have been to agree to reconstruction. He also had declined to put himself forward for the SPFL Board because the structure made it impossible to achieve meaningful change.

It's astonishing that some Thistle fans are worried that Court  Action will turn other Clubs against us. They have already thrown us under the bus so what else can they do...maybe find another bogus reason to relegate us?

  10. Woodstock Jag is not the man to have on your side if you are 2-0 down with 5 minutes to go - "We can't win...we shouldn't even try to score in case we annoy them" For goodness sake, don't you realise the satisfaction you would get from at least having a wild hack at them?

I haven't seen the QC's Opinions or the Petition so I am not sure what arguments will be put forward. However, WJ is right to caution about the likelihood of success in the Court Action - I posted on the first page of this thread that a Court was not a forum to ensure fair play.

I have no expectation of seeing Ann Budge & Jacqui Low  being carried triumphant in Sedan Chairs from the Court of Session carrying a judgement reinstating Hearts & Thistle and awarding them huge sums in compensation. If our case is truly the crock WJ fears, it will probably be thrown out at an early stage. However, I remain hopeful that we might at least embarrass Doncaster & the SPFL Board  and possibly be given some compensation to go away.

While fans of other Clubs can point and laugh at us, I actually think we have had quite a lot of goodwill & sympathy from other Clubs and the Media...it has done us no good whatsoever. I don't care if we aggravate the other Clubs. We have been consigned to a Diddy League which may not play any games so there may not be any promotion...or maybe they will relegate us again on alphabetical placings.

I am scunnered with Football just now. We have been thrown under the bus but to some extent we have only ourselves to blame for our predicament My enthusiasm drained during the Caldwell era which lasted about 9 months too long and I don't see any prospect of watching a good Thistle side for the foreseeable.

I am not sure what else they can do to us. We are now in a league that despite Thistle and Falkirk asking the SPFL to confirm a start date, we don't have one. With a good chance we will not see any football in league 1 until January 2021 and possibly no 20/21 season at all.

That's the point - they have already relegated us to a League which might not play any games - what else can they do that would be worse so why should we worry about aggravating them?

  12. Litigation is not dramatic nor a forum for ensuring fair play - it's a Slow Motion Ritual Dance and ferociously expensive. For these reasons, the vast majority of court actions which are raised do not reach hearings at which evidence is heard - I think  the percentage is around 97%. In most cases, the parties realise that it is better to settle. If we have the safety net of a benefactor who will pick up the tab, that gives us some negotiating strength.

Two Senior QC's have given advice that there is an arguable case and although that is hardly a guarantee of success,  it doesn't suggest that it's utterly hopeless. The  SPFL may have to explain the reason that they declined to put forward a side from the Second Division on the basis that the League Season had not completed but disregarded this where Hearts, Thistle & Stranraer were concerned.  We were so far off their radar that they omitted to mention that we had been relegated when they announced the initial vote.  We may get an offer of compensation to go away and at least it will be a distraction from the games we can't see or don't play.

its very noble to hope to redress this on the pitch. The reality is that irreparable damage will be done. By way of example, Motherwell escaped relegation in 2003 because of the Stadium Regulations - the following year the rules were changed after the event, and Motherwell voted to relegate us. Since then, they have been in Europe and in cup finals and regularly finished high in the League while we have washed up in the Seaside League again.

What are the other clubs going to do if we aggravate them - gerrymander the rules to relegate us for a third time?

Maybe showing my bias here, but I think there is a huge difference between relegation and promotion on the basis of an unfinished season. We were a Championship team when the season was cut short and they were not. Every single game was played on the basis of a 36 game competition and then after all the games were played they decided retrospectively to make it less than that.

I'm willing to accept that it would have been very harsh not to promote top placed teams, or to award Celtic the league. I suppose to be fair I'm willing to accept that it was also tough on Falkirk. But I don't think it's right to suggest that, after an incomplete season, they had as much or more claim on a Championship place than we did.

If a game is abandoned after 70 minutes you don't award it to the team who are in the lead

In 1961, Denis Law scored all six of Manchester City's FA Cup Tie when the game was abandoned  after 69 minutes. City lost the replayed match.  The result in an incomplete game and even more in an incomplete League should not stand.

With regard to Falkirk, I think they have a legitimate grievance - they were one point behind but their final game of the season was at home to Raith. I think there was a very reasonable probability that they would have finished top.  While Celtic, Dundee United & Cove were far ahead in their respective Leagues, Raith have had a very fortunate promotion...and at our expense.

Read the link I posted. 2012 was a proposal. It progressed to a vote in 2013. County & St Mirren voted against it.

I am fairly sure that it was Aberdeen who wanted to retain the 11-1 voting.  St Mirren's former chairman, Stewart Gilmour mentioned in his interview on Sportsound last weekend that he had been unable to get  the change he wanted from 11-1.

My recollection was that St.Mirren & Ross County had voted against the proposal to restructure the Leagues - I suspect that a change to the 11-1 was added to the proposal as bait to get their preferred option through - can you believe that the SPL would have tried such an unprincipled stunt?

  15. Anyone who thinks that law courts are a means of obtaining truth and justice are very much mistaken - they clearly have more baws than brains. In 2004, there was a clear breach of SPL Rules regarding ground capacity with a re-vote to obtain the desired result. My recollection is that while the Court of Session Judges expressed sympathy for Thistle's case, they refused to grant an interim interdict on the basis that we should have exhausted all options with the Football Authorities.

This time, there was a vote of all the member clubs and they came to a  clear decision. There may well have been procedural errors in the voting but even if the Court upheld this, another vote would then have been arranged with the same result...and added hostility from the other clubs.

While I understand and to some extent share the grievance with the other clubs, in fairness, there was little reason for any of them to vote No - they were either saving themselves from possible relegation(St Mirren, Hamilton, Ross County, QoS, Alloa, Forfar, Brechin), gaining a far from certain promotion (Raith) or simply getting a wad of money and moving on to plan for next season.  There is nothing intrinsically unfair about deciding league positions on a average points per game basis if the League games can not be played. A null & void season would be unfair to Celtic, Dundee United & Cove who are clearly going to win their respective Divisions.

The reality is that as in 2004, we are not a big enough Club to matter and we have been thrown under the bus because it suits the vested interests. It doesn't mean there aren't questions to be asked -

    - why was the vote to decide the final places tied to the release of funds?

    - what did Dundee get in return for changing their vote?

    - would the League have been called on the same basis if no games had been played after the end of January? I think Rangers would have been champions by a tiny fraction.

    - will Aston Villa, who are in the same position as us , be relegated? The Premiership are considering no relegation with the top two from the Championship being promoted.

    - why couldn't a deadline have been set to play at least some games before ending the season? The Premiership are considering up to 30 June.

It does leave a bitter taste but we have only ourselves to blame for ending up bottom in a poor standard League - I like McCall but the results have not been good enough...and we were about 10 months late in getting rid of Caldwell.

I'm hoping that something comes out of the re-construction talks...I have attended fewer games over the last two seasons and would have even less enthusiasm for the First Division...however I suspect there will be more serious problems about going to Firhill this year than uncultured football.

  16. The former St Mirren Director Stewart Gilmour in his Sportsound Interview yesterday said with particular emphasis yesterday that Doncaster "really didn't like it" when he didn't get his way and also that SPFL Lawyer Rod Mackenzie habitually used the rules to block alternative suggestions.

Have Ladbrokes suggested that they will be looking for a return of their sponsorship money if the League is not called this week? Would that be a good business position for a betting company to take in current circumstances? I doubt Ladbrokes are short of money or  that the relatively small amount of SPFL sponsorship payment is a crucial financial factor for them. The highest paid Chief Executive in the UK last year was the Boss of Bet365 who was paid a mere £323 million so I suspect Ladbrokes won't be relying on recovering funds from the SPFL to keep their business afloat.

I checked the English Premiership Table and noted that Aston Villa are in a relegation spot but have a game in hand which if they win will take them clear of the drop. It will be interesting to see how that situation is dealt with.

I'm not sure if there is a genuine reason to make an urgent decision at this time - there will have to be  degree of fixture co-ordination for Football though-out Europe and I don't expect Football to return to anything like normal for a long time.

  17.  My recollection is that they managed to miscount the vote at the initial meeting in 2004 and had to be corrected when they tried to announce that the vote to relegate us had been passed - there were only 12 votes to count!  I am therefore not surprised that an email from Dundee which went against the desired result was conveniently "lost".

My resentment at the vote relegation vote in  2004 was not directed against Inverness, who were given the opportunity to be promoted but against Hearts, Hibs , Aberdeen (who picked up the ground rent) and Motherwell( who survived relegation the previous year on the ground rule)

The Forfar Chairman was speaking from his own club's self -interest which is that they will benefit from playing Thistle rather than Stranraer. If we play at Forfar next season (whenever that might be) it would be good if Thistle fans instead of going to Station Park bought tickets for an Inverness home game instead.

Dundee have clearly been got at.  This will now turn into part of the Old Firm Punch & Judy show...which might be our best chance of avoiding relegation by diktat.

  18. There are no neutrals - everyone votes in their own self-interest.  As I posted earlier in this thread, this "solution" would not be applied and the Leagues called if Rangers had been two points behind Celtic with a game in hand...incidentally Rangers would be Champions in that scenario.

  19. I picked up on my Youtube feed yesterday a video of Rangers v Thistle at Ibrox on New Year's Day 1972. We had the League Cup Final Line-up other than John Gibson for a presumably injured Jimmy Bone. Someone with better computer skills will maybe upload it here - though health warning  - it's from Rangers TV.

It's about 14 minutes of highlights taken from Scotsport with commentary by Alec Cameron. Our goal was posted on the Thistle Facebook/Twitter page yesterday as goal of the day - it was a belter with Alex Forsyth surging past John Greig and a flying header by Denis McQuade.

It's good to see that legendary side in action - but although I wasn't at that game and hadn't seen the highlights before, I definitely have seen the Movie - it doesn't have a happy ending.

  20. It was a game which left me a bit flat...it was  hard fought and fairly even...not awful but few real goal threats by either side...Ayr didn't look a better side but they are third  and the League Table doesn't look good tonight...we were ok but there was not much to be enthusiastic about...we don't have many exciting players and although they might be upgrades on what we had, I am not that keen on Old Firm loan players...I was sitting looking along the 18 yard line and had a clear view and thought it was a penalty so didn't even get annoyed...we didn't miss any of the players who have left.

I thought Penrice was the pick of the team, O'Ware won a lot of headers, Bannigan composed(other than colliding with Brownlie), Zanatta nearly very good frustratingly often...Rodden didn't get in the game...MacKinnon made one good challenge and I think I spotted him play the ball on one other occasion.

We have improved and I think McCall has a coherent plan...I don't think we will be relegated...but it is all a bit underwhelming...we seem a long way from the standard of players I would like to see.

Team I remember from a memorable game when we beat yon great Dundee side (who went on to win the league) 3-0. Early '62 iirc

    G.... Niven (his debut)

    FBs....Muir and Brown

    HBs....Closs, McKinnon & Cunningham

    FWDs....Smith, McBride, Hainey (1), Duffy (2), & McParland

I challenge anyone to come up with a more goalscoring forward line.

On a quick check of the Official History, I make that a total of close to 400 goals for Thistle in their careers.

  22. The first time I saw McGinty play, I thought he was clumsy and awkward...I do remember a game towards the end of last season when he made a number of swaggering runs forward but he just wasn't good enough...seemed like a decent guy and good luck to him...a certainty to score against us!

I was more impressed with the first few times I saw Slater play...he was just the sort of capable midfielder who could bring the ball forward and make a pass that we had lacked in our relegation season...way better than Ryan Edwards, Martin Woods & Adam Barton(Version 2). He became less effective under the Caldwell's Shambles and I remember shouting "No One To Pass To" on a regular basis when he and Banzo brought the ball through from midfield. His injury kept him out of the reckoning for the early part of the season and while a decent player, he was too similar and not as good as Banzo & Cole. I would have thought he is far too good for Queens Park's level but they have just gone professional and maybe they are planning to do a Gretna.

I was told that McCall's initial assessment of his squad was that only Bannigan would have been in his Ayr side so I am not surprised at the extent of the clear-out.  I am not disappointed by the departure of any of the players who have left and there a few more who are still there that I would not miss.  We desperately need a midfield anchor but I'm not sure  about MacKinnon...otherwise  I have faith in  McCall's ability to build a team...but the Jury is still out.
