  1. Agree with most of what's been said

The positives - another clean sheet. Cut them open a few times and Graham and Robinson both missed sitters. I haven't managed along to many games this year, was my first look at McBeth apart from a sub appearance at Cappielow months ago, like of the look of him. First I've seen O'Reily too and I thought he looked decent in his cameo.

Negatives - yeh just overall, end of season waste of time feel to it. Thought Neilson struggled in midfield - too upright & stiff a runner for a midfield, too slow on the turn, be hard to change the shape/personell after so many clean sheets but can't help thinking McBeth in the middle instead of him and O'Reilly next to Aero would be better? But with so many clean sheets, maybe changing it would be stupid. Yeh an off day for Fitzy, but u have to give him then, cos you know when the lights are on in the play offs, he'll produce moments. I've been going to Thistle since 1992, i cant think of a more two footed player we've had in that time than Fitzy.

Agree about the ref - thougth he was excellent, game flowed, wasn't too whistle happy. Was a really easy game to ref to be fair, but he's best ref I've seen in a long time.

  2. Should have won, didn't really get out of 2nd gear apart from that spell first 20 mins or so of 2nd half, where we created a ton of chances and should have got a few goals.

Great first goal from QOTS, last 2 were frustrating, conceding 3 against a team that was camped in the whole 2nd half is frustrating.

Thought Lawless was clearly the best player on the pitch, and pass marks also to Stanway who faded a wee bit after a good first hour or so, but look tired later on, but overall he did really well. Jack McMillan had a decent game too I thought, otherwise nobody covered themselves in glory.

Looked really vulnerable on the break too, just running through the middle of us, I didn't see Robinson do much to be honest but I was watching on stream so not always the best way to judge.

Our record in this competition is abysmal.

  3. The League 1 win was hugely down to signing Tiff, we would not have went on that run if we'd hadn't got him on loan.

But overall a frustratingly streaky player, either ripping teams to shreds, or poor, with no in between it seems. Thought it was his 2 worst games back to back for us vs Ross County, very wasteful, and can't strike a ball well, I'd loved to have kept him but won't lose any sleep over it either.

  4. Nice to know I'm not the only one. Been going since 1992 and never took a defeat like this, even Tannadice or other relegations, Sunday was just pure stress, didn't enjoy it at all, was a bag of nerves all week and felt the poor finishing at Firhill on Thurs would come back to haunt us.

But the weird almost extreme grief reaction I had is beyond anything every caused by a football match before. I think the brain chemistry of it all probably plays a part - being 20 mins or so away from a dream outcome, full of adrenaline waiting on/expecting a lifetime moment watching thistle win an unexpected promotion, and to have it all taken away in blink of an eye, just a massive come down!

I would have went home on 90 mins if i was on my own - i got a lift, but had i drove up myself I'd have went home on the 90, wasn't enjoying it and knew it was over, felt so exhausted that I don't think I'd have made it to the pitch invasion even if we'd won.

  5. Reading this thread has put me in a more suspicious mood with regards to reasons behind this...

but before coming on this thread, to me the obvious thought was that this decision was taken after cove, but they didn't want to give a rookie manager rangers away for his first match?

if we have anyone with any form of forward thinking/succession planning, we'll have been on the phone to folk this week and i'd expect an early appointment this week?

I dont get how it can be a cost cutting measure, surely their compo would skin us and we'd be better letting them run out their contracts, it has to be a team performance thing?

very strange and probably the most surprising dismissal in my 30 years as a jags fan

  6. Definitely feel Sunday had a hand in this. The sombre atmosphere at what we used to have, painted GC in a bad light.

McCall or Lennon would be fine with me, as a wee outside shout what about Martin Canning? Thought he did well with the accies on a shoestring, always liked him

Today felt really weird. On one level it was a wonderful tribute to an amazing Thistle career. But on another level it felt like we were in some collective sense mourning something that had been lost.

I hope that feeling proves premature.

That’s how i feel. Feel like ive been at a funeral. Struggled not to blubber like a baby at the end when he waving and pounding the badge. What a player. What a great team that was

I’m sure we played there in a midweek pre season game and won 1 or 2-0,  maybe around the early 2000’s?

No we went up in the winter break I’m sure when Gerry Britton and Derek Whyte were the co-managers. We won 4-0, midweek friendly. Think Gerry scored 2 and maybe that young lad we had Matthew Shields?

  9. Neilson is the outstanding candidate but there’s zero chance we can afford him.

Goodwin to me on paper is the sort of appointment I’d want. Young hungry manager, who has promotion already on his cv.  Knows our level of football too

Interview with Archie on Jagszone...   says that two player could still yet exercise their 'relegation clause' in their contract, Spittal is one...      Mentions that the 3 up for sale are too expensive too keep but if we don't get offers they might still be here at the start of the season...    we're looking mainly in the Scottish market, players from England are on "flip flop" time plus they tend to ask for rent free accommodation which we cannot really afford (that might apply to 2 out of the 3 up for sale?) ...   All in all, we're starting from a fair way back compared to some other clubs. Achieving top spot first time of asking would be a remarkable achievement under the circumstances....

Yeh the boards comment about promotion is still confusing to me. Very little chance in my mind that we can win promotion the now, in fact with the massive rebuild i would not be surprised with a lower half finish (hope im wrong of course)

Relegated 2003/04 from premier league return to premier league 2013/14 1year?

They are getting at the fact we were relegated again right away, and after 1 year we were in 3rd tier, and thus them being clever as we were out the 2nd tier. Its the sort of argument my wife makes when shes trying to get on my tits

  12. There are no names I'm really that excited by that we could realistically get.

Paton I'd take if at the right price, still think he would contribute at a high level in the first division. The first 6 weeks of the first division winning season under Jackie was the best run of form I've ever seen from a Jags team, the football was out of this world, and Paton's pressing and aggression in the middle was a huge part of that.

That said, going back the way isn't always a good idea, but then again I thought Rowser was just as good a contributor when he came back as he was when he was first with us, so Paton in my mind would be worth a punt.

But last time we won the league - who had heard of Doolan, Erskine, O'Donnell, Taylor-Sinclair, Lawless, Craigen etc before we signed them? Not many folks. I'd rather go down the route of hungry young guys and build again. We have enough experience with the guys we've held onto, lets get some young guys with a chip on their shoulder.

  13. JJ - this is one of my major gripes from this season.

I am in no way shape or form an expert in this field, but I feel the management of the long term injuries, and the subsequent reliance on them coming back to save us, shafted us this season (amongst other things).

Lost count of the amount of jagzone interviews where Archie seemed perplexed Bannigan had broken down again, and stated they had been advised wrongly about waiting on him being operated on.

Archie puts a lot of stock into the sport science part, you often here im say things about how many miles players have in their legs etc, and how he consults junior mendes about who is fit and who needs a rest. But injuries are such a common thing for us that you could argue it's not working. It could however just be bad luck, we'll see this season. As previously stated by many - if we don't get off to a good start, the natives will be restless.

The statement was a bit strange. Patronising toward Archie a bit, whilst admittedly wholeheartedly supporting him. A bit aggressive with "win promotion or bust" messaging - I presume this is sell season tickets. But with no Maxi, and squad about to be ripped to shreds, it's a huge task to get us promoted right away, I'd be delighted with play offs this year, but fully expecting 5th-6th. Then make a push next year.

We'll  see how it goes, hope the loyalty pays off for the board, and I hope Archie can turn it around this year.

  14. elevenone did I sign up for this? I did it last year but don't know if I signed up this year.

im skint just now-paid a week tomorrow so if I signed up - let me know and i'll send u money a week tomorrow is that ok?

    Cheers

    Agree entirely.

Just about every manager will eventually lose his job. And EVERY experienced manager that posters on here say "would do a good job for us" will have lost his job elsewhere, more than once in many cases. I'd like to know the skill set employed to know that their selection would do the business for us. Same goes the other way round of course and who's to say just because a manager has been sacked once or twice he'd be a failure with us. In my mind then as every manager has failed somewhere in their career, is whether they've learned from their previous errors. And are they all the stronger for their poor management?  And again I would ask the question re the skill set of any of us as to how we know who would cut the mustard and who wouldn't.

As far as I'm aware we're all Jags fans on here and want the best for the Club. I just feel we should remember that the names we bandy about should be taken more lightly. So in that vein I'll suggest we look for a manager who will get us promoted even if that's as far as he's capable of taking us. Ideally someone with  experience in doing just that.  One name springs to mind but that might not now be feasible and would of course be a very hard sell to many.

agree with this - I would be open to keeping archie for this reason - but board would need convinced has he learned why this season was as poor as it was.

Injuries yeh but we can't keep falling back on that. Recruitment, out of form players who were previously reliable, management of the long term injuries, failure to get any continuity on the pitch (again injuries are partly to blame), players relaxing into a comfort zone, "losing the dressing room" - there can be questions asked of all these issues. The goal difference is embarrassing. Losing in the play offs to Livi is embarrassing (but good luck to them).

Huge questions for archie to answer if he wants to stay, which isn't a given. I hope he's learned from this season, and could use his experience and anger at what happened to lead us back.

  16. agree with most of that laukat - team has reached the end of their shelf life, its been a great ride these past 5 years, and as you quite rightly say it was McCall that put the wheels in motion.

I've been a huge supporter of Archie, but my biggest concern appears to be he hasn't really moved us on in terms of on the field plan - to go into yesterday, the biggest game in our recent history, and the plan is still for Dools/Erskine/Lawless to win it for you, that was the plan 5 years ago, why have we no alternative?

I too would take 5th-6th right now for next year, too often you see teams (happened to us remember) going straight down, we need to stop the cycle of losing every week and not scoring goals. Comfortable 5-6th would do me, and make a push for play offs/promotion the next season.

  17. Hard to comment on following Archie's comments about the clause in many players contracts that they be released or accept a pay cut.

I'd like McCarthy, Erskine, Lawless, Dools, Elliot, Penrice to stay.

Edwards and Cerny too if the price was right, think they could be 2 of the higher earners.

Storey I think would do well in first div, but a whole season on the bench, there's no way he won't trigger his release clause and wind up with accies or dundee or something.

Everyone else, I'm no bothered. If Barton's head was in it and wanted to be here, I think he'd stroll the first div at centre half, but he doesn't want to be here from how it looks.
