  1. Two pretty evenly matched teams with one able to take their chances.

We had a chance to really take a grip of the tie after we scored but did our usual retreat and invited them on to us before eventually losing a cheap goal.  Poor handling from Sneddon again, a shot he should be dealing with.

Disagree on Tiffoney having a good game. Outwith a couple of promising runs he was largely anonymous, especially in the second half where he appeared to give up.

McCall’s subs were again ineffective and to a certain extent shows the imbalance in the squad he’s put together.

Still in the tie but improvement needed, especially in midfield. Docherty was poor again tonight, takes far too long moving the ball around the pitch and was caught out again for their second goal.

  2. Tiffoney was clearly nowhere near fit to the point where it seemed he was playing with an injury. He ran at half pace, didn’t take his man on once and pulled out of every tackle. Not sure why he was allowed to start.

Another poor game but didn’t think we looked in much danger at any point other than when Sneddon went walkabout.

  3. Richard Foster was on the Open Goal podcast a few weeks back talking about the pitch. Said the Groundsman told the board groundsharing would be a distaster but was ignored. If that’s true then questions need to be asked.

Won’t be many season tickets purchased next year if that’s what is served up on a weekly basis.

  4. A sore one to take but this kind of performance has been coming. We’ve relied on a great defensive record to get us through games, our goalscoring (or lack thereof!) is what is hurting us.

We’ll have a decent fight on now to keep in the playoffs but I think we’re more than capable of it.

The standard of the division this year has been poor and that is perhaps what got our hopes up about automatic promotion. Killie look to have got their act together and with their squad and budget then they are where they should be.

As a newly promoted team with a much reduced budget (350k behind our opponents) before a ball was kicked, then I think a top four finish is a decent effort. I think the frustration comes from seeing what we’re up against and how we’ve shot ourselves in the foot a few times.

The squad has some decent players but I’m not sure how many could make the step up. Compare that to the 2012/13 squad where we had 8/9 who made the jump easily.

McCall does a decent enough job but he can be stubborn when it comes to certain players, tactics etc. He mentioned that if we got promoted he’d happily go with a midfield of Bannigan, Docherty and Crawford. I’d argue that only 1 of those 3 could play a league up and that’s being generous with Bannigan.

His loyalty to his players is not a bad thing but I’d argue the team would benefit from a fresh midfield pairing over the next few games to see if we can become a bit more attack minded.

A tough result to take but hopefully the team can get back on track against Hamilton next week.

  5. First half was very poor but I thought we improved in the second.

The pitch made it very difficult to play any football and sadly it’s only going to get worse before it gets better.

The ref was dreadful, Tiffoney must wonder what he has to do to get a penalty.

Hopefully we can get McAllister fit and playing on the right wing. Crawford was fine but he drifts inside due to being a centre mid and McKenna doesn’t have the confidence to play as an overlapping full back. I like McKenna defensively, he’s solid and sticks to his task well but he’d definitely benefit from having a winger ahead of him. It would also give us another option rather than always going via Tiffoney.

Graham took his goal well but was far too isolated in the first half.

I’d like to think Thistle could hold on to Mayo but I think he’ll be playing at a higher level soon, a great prospect.

Jakubiak looked lively and I think he’ll be a good addition.

I thought McIver was decent enough as well at seeing the game out.

All in a hard fought and deserved 3 points.

  6. A good win when not at our best.

6 clean sheets on the bounce is some effort, even if Sneddon had a couple of dodgy moments near the end today.

We looked a lot better when Smith came on and we went one up with two either side of Graham. When Rudden and Graham play together we seem to resort to launching long balls at them, we're much more fluent when attacking with pace through the middle and wings.

I thought Bannigan was MotM today but no arguments with Akinola, he's formed a brilliant partnership with the impressive Mayo.

All to play for now, big run of games coming up.

  7. Pretty standard stuff, sadly.

Played well enough for the majority of the first half without really threatening and then our usual sleepwalk at the start of the second half resulting in two poor goals being lost.

Docherty was dreadful today, if he wasn't a McCall favourite then not a chance he would have lasted 90mins. Constantly gave the ball away and looked well off the pace.

The defence were poor, I lost count of the amount of times they let a long ball bounce and it was only a matter of time before it led to a chance/goal. To be fair to Shaw, he took his goal extremely well.  McKenna is solid enough defensively but doesn't have the pace/guile to offer much goiong forward and Foster looked very much like a guy in the latter stages of his career by the end of the game.

Kyle Turner has shown in spells that he is a talented footballer but we won't get the best of him being stuck out wide. Might be an idea to start him behind Rudden in the next game and see if that brings us any joy. It might also stop us launching long balls to Brian Graham.

Killie weren't pretty to watch but they had us sussed after about 25 minutes and they rarely looked troubled by any of our attacks. Their big keeper was very commanding, took every cross we played with ease.

Tiffoney looked ok and at least tried to beat his man but his dive was laughable, even more so because he'd already gone past the defender.

That is a very poor Morton team. We could have put 5 or 6 past Morton.

Really difficult to judge how good Akinola and Gordon where because Morton offered so little but both merit another chance to show they are the answer

That being said back 4 were solid and Sneddon will never have a more comfortable game in goals. Special mention goes to Kevin Holt who had Morton's start player Ugwu in his back pocket all game. So much so Ugwu got frustrated and should have been sent off for elbowing Holt in the face.

The second goal was probably the best, with the pass from Foster to Tiffoney an absolute beauty. Tiffoney's lay off to Rudden was also very good.

2 goald in 1 game from corners is just not the Thistle way.   We've probably scored more goals from corners this season than we have in the last 3 or 4 combined.

Tiffoney and Foster seem to have a very good understanding.

In the build up to the second goal, Tiffoney pointed down the line to where Foster should put it and he duly obliged with a wonderful pass off his weaker foot. Tiffoney then played a great cut back for Rudden to rifle home.

Morton were very poor but our attacking options will be a threat to any team in this devision.

  9. Always disappointing to lose but not overly surprising with important players missing and Montrose needing to win.

It should give McCall an idea of what fringe players aren’t up to it (if he didn’t already know).

I think one of the commentary team (I may be wrong) on Thursday night claimed that they wouldn’t be disappointed if we kept every member of the squad for next season.

Probably some sentimentality in those thoughts after just witnessing a 5-0 win to clinch the league but in order to be competitive next year then we’ll need to strengthen.

One of Lambie’s great strengths was replacing guys who pretty much played every game for him in winning teams as he didn’t think they’d make the step up.

The players deserve to enjoy today and the party to follow for their efforts this season.

Will be interesting to see our activity over the summer.

  10. Decent enough game, a few players still look a bit short of sharpness.

Penrice and O'Ware looked pretty suspect down that left side, very poor positioning from Penrice for the second.

Liked the look of Mckenna when he came on, tough in the tackle and carried the ball well.

Glass looked useful although not sure he has the pace to play wide. Shea Gordon was pretty anonymous, not sure what he brings to the team with the other options available.

Would disagree with that. There was cover but there were also three full backs who were injured before Lawless was put there - Mustapha Dumbuya, Callum Booth and Christie Elliott.

Fair point, I'd forgotten all about Dumbuya.

  12. Stevie Lawless was messed around by Archibald?

The same Stevie Lawless that was on record thanking Archibald for standing by him and saving his career after the ban for betting on matches?

So Archibald is now to blame for a Premier League player (who probably just had the best season of his career) for not wanting to return to League 1 Thistle?!

Lawless ended up playing LWB due to the injures we had at the time and the lack of cover (that is something you can blame Archie for).  He played well there and has ironically also started games there for Livi as well.

We need to forget the past and move on.

Doolan and Erskine were great players for us but neither were up to it in their last spell with us. Sure, we'll be playing at a level below but I think there will be plenty of players out of contract who will be better bets for us.

Aye, he's not one of the 14.

Fox, Sneddon, Williamson, O'Ware, Brownlie, Penrice, Bannigan, Gordon, Niang, Zanatta, Lyons, Mansell, Graham, and Rudden.

Depressing to see how many of or current team are still in contract for next year/two years.

It still baffles me the length of contracts handed to some by Caldwell/McCall as reward for what has essentially been 2 years of complete failure in the championship.

  14. I think any Jags fan still looking at the playoffs are kidding themselves on.

Survival this season will be a success (in relative terms).

The new players need to get themselves up to speed straight away for us to have any chance. Thankfully it looks as though Brian Graham has and hopefully Rudden will join him.

Mackinnon isn’t fit and carrying extra weight but I thought he played the defensive role well last night. His positional sense is very good which helps to make up for his lack of pace.

Zanatta was a bit more positive as well.

Cole’s decision making last night wasn’t great, needs to get his head up a bit more.

Realistically we need to win next week. The longer we wait for our form to turn the more detached we’ll become.

  15. Some of the new signings looked decent, some of them didn’t.

I thought after a really poor start we played well and deservedly took the lead.

Penalty looked soft but we played poorly after losing the equaliser. Too many players making the wrong decision and just an all round lack of quality from both teams.

I hope we can turn this round but I don’t see where a lot of fans get their confidence from. We don’t score enough and can’t keep a clean sheet, if that doesn’t change soon then there is only one outcome.

Its sad to see how far we’ve fallen in such a short space of time.

I think that is a tad unfair on Miller. He might wave his arms about and look disappointed when play breaks down - but I don’t think you can accuse him of not trying to be involved unlike Cardle yesterday who appeared at least to me to try as hard as possible to stay out of the road of the ball

Fastest Cardle moved yesterday was his sprint to be subbed. Contributes next to nothing, often ends up getting in Williamson’s way. Doesn’t have the pace to go on the outside of the full back so constantly cuts infield. Must be a piece of piss to mark.

Austin looked to have a bit of pace and power about him, get him in ahead of Cardle.

  17. O’Ware should never be captain of this team. Never his fault, always pointing the finger at a teammate.

It’s so predictable now it’s hard to even get angry. Play well for 30 mins, don’t score then collapse.

Our midfield is weak as piss, teams just run through them to be faced by the most brittle defence I’ve seen in a long time.

Mackinnon would be a vast improvement and might actually bring some heart and fight to the team.

  18. Other than that great chance in the first half, Penicuik didn't really have any clear cut chances despite having lots of possession.

They were well organised and did brilliantly considering how early they went behind.

The early goal probably worked against us. The players thought they would coast it and proceeded to put in well below 100%.

Possibly the laziest front 2 ever seen in a Jags jersey, Harkins and Zanatta should be embarrased by that performance.

The captain should be setting the standard but O'Ware struts around as if he's some world beater. Booting the ball away, swearing at team mates, always taking the easy option isn't the kind of standard I'd be looking for in my captain. His absence last season seemed to increase folks perception of how good he is in my opinion.

January can't come soon enough for McCall. His hands are tied at the minute but setting up 3-5-2 against a non league team at home didn't exactly set a positive tone.

Not sure any player could put his hand up and say they played well although Slater at least seem to be putting in the effort. Could hear him a few times giving Zanatta a hard time for being a lazy b*stard.

Big improvents needed on Tuesday if we are to get anything.
