  1. I hope this is the right place to add my tuppenceworth on the question of league reconstruction. Scotland has 42 senior teams, so three divisions each of 14 teams seems the obvious solution. Each team plays each other team once at home and once away = 26 matches. Each division then splits into a top 7 and a bottom 7, and these play each other team in their group once at home and once away = a further 12 matches, making a total of 38 league matches (which is two more than in a 10-team division playing each other 4 times). Two up and two down between the divisions, please. Add in the Scottish Cup, the League Cup, and the Alba Cup and that should provide sufficient variation without rupturing the whole Scottish system for ever. It also means the OF will effectively be guaranteed their 4 games per year in the League, so the TV companies should be happy. The fractionally bigger number of league matches should also help the continued existence of those teams which need a drip-feed of attendance income. I don't think there is any call for regionalised divisions in a country the size of Scotland. In practical terms, how many times per season are Stranraer going to be drawn against Ross County? And please let's be realistic about how many full-time clubs Scotland can cope with! Comments welcome.

  2. Did anyone hear Alec Smith - currently Chairman of the Scottish Managers' Association - on Radio Scotland this morning? He advocated precisely the structure which I have always wished to see. Let me say more. You start from the current 42 senior teams in Scotland, add six more from the Juniors/Highland League/East of Scotland League/etc., in order to reach a total of 48 senior teams. From these you construct three leagues of 16, which is the absolute ideal number in any league arrangement. Teams play each other home and away - and the SPL can have a split if they want it, in order to guarantee four OF games per season. Two up, two down throughout. Sectional League Cup in each of the three divisions, so that you have sufficient games for everyone. Add in the Scottish Cup, the League Cup, and the Alba Cup - and hey presto, you have got something which should retain the punters' interest throughout the season!

  3. I honestly don't believe that Rangers and Celtic are the big drivers behind the closed shop stuff. I've long believed that its the Hearts/Hibs/Aberdeens/Dundee Utds of the world that are terrified of change. The OF may get 4 games a season against each other---but Aberdeen get to play *8* games against one or other of the OF.

For me, the big thing that *has* to change is the number of teams relegated/promoted. If it were me I'd be really tempted to keep the leagues exactly as they are, but with the bottom 3 getting automatically relegated from the SPL, bottom 2 automatically relegated from the SFL1 and SFL2, and some kind of system to allow relegation at the bottom of SFL3 so that junior teams etc could have a fair crack at the seniors. I think that would make Scottish football much more interesting.

  4. I assume that Admin will jump promptly on this sort of unwarranted comment. All that I have submitted here(and elsewhere) to Tom Hosie has been both appreciated and acknowledged. My intention - consistently - is to assist in the process of raising standards at PTFC. There WILL be more to follow and it WILL be grammatically and syntactically accurate. Today's win was pleasing. Who will it be in the semi-final?

  5. Before this thread disappears off of the foot of the page, I did promise Tom Hosie I would return with further corrections for the programme. So, to keep the thread going, let's turn to page 3 of the Falkirk programme(24.08.2010)middle column thereof: "We haven't defended it well but the ball has basically just hit ..." should read: We didn't defend it well but the ball basically just hit ...

I realise this is simply a matter of tense usage, but we need to get it right! Incidentally, in the first column we have "the Thistle fans that came down", which should of course be 'the Thistle fans WHO came down'. Lots more to follow in due course - for the moment I need to get to Firhill for the Ayr United game!

  6. Could I enter a request, please, for the team line-ups to be clearly printed in the programme? There haven't been any team lines in the last two programmes, which pretty well renders them useless. And please don't let the printers add an extra 1000 to the attendance at the Berwick game. Moreover, please note that the correct form for the unofficial bounce games is "closed-door match", NOT "close door match". Thank you for your kind attention - I will send you other items for correction as I spot them.
