I think it was Cowdenbeath we beat in the semi-final?

Cheers AF - and thanks as well to PTD for his response.

The Rangers one still rankles given that the referee, Alan Ferguson, pretty much admitted after the game that he had not applied the rules properly.

Barney, my recollection was the ref was Jim McGillivray, an Edinburgh taxi driver to trade?

My wife and I returned to Waverley station after a weekend in London not long after this game and we let the couple behind us in the queue take his taxi when we saw he was the driver.  After the game I remember he said something along the lines of preventing a riot by not sending Paul Gascoigne off for fighting with Tom Smith.  No such reluctance to send our boys off though.  I think he did the decent thing and retired from reffing shortly afterwards.

  3. I have no time for the guy, but I thought the control and cross for their goal by Liam Craig was the best bit of skill in the entire match.

Nice of him to even things up later, as I think it was him who needlessly brought Ryan Edwards down for the pen.

  4. Yes (see Dundee derby part II)

Is there another country in the world where you could sit through a match waiting for the next round draw, and the exact same tie gets drawn out again? They're not even in the same division and they'll have played each other twice at the same venue in the opening weeks of the season.

  5. Was just in from the pub but I'm sure I heard the Morton player Jamie Lindsay being referred to on numerous occasions in last night's Sportscene as Liam Lindsay. Anyone confirm or was I simply having another of my senior moments?

I heard that too m'lady (though I'm also well past the first flush of youth).

  6. It occurred to me midway through the first half that nowadays I have virtually no expectation of us scoring in front of the North Stand. I think I've seen three (Thistle) goals there all season.

Some interesting discussion on here about how we play and why. One thing I would say is, despite this being our most successful team for 30 years, the style won't bring any new punters in the gates and without that, it's hard to see how we kick on from here.

  7. Re Dallas, yes he was poor but at least he didn't give any of the penalty claims - there plenty refs who would have done and ruined or day!

Agree with this. I didn't catch the (alleged) tug on Irvine, but if Reckford had gone down when Banzo was pulling him back on the bye-line, the ref had a decision to make. Maybe because he's a full-back he kept on his feet. I'm sure a forward player would have gone down.

  8. I agree with OTIG - the NS set-up definitely differentiates us from similar size clubs. I would imagine some fans of these clubs would love to have a dedicated stand where they can stand with mates and have a song or two if they fancy it.

Prior to the current set-up, watching most games at Firhill was like watching on a huge flatscreen TV with the volume turned off. I was a JHS regular until halfway through last season (primarily due to the over 16s rule as I often attend with my son) but since the age limit was dropped we've watched every home game from the NS. It's not perfect, and I don't think anyone would say it is, but you do go home feeling like you've actually been to a football match which often wasn't the case for me prior to the NS being opened up to Jags fans. For that reason, unless the cost is absolutely prohibitive, I believe the NS should remain as is.

  9. Ridiculous tackle, definite red card. Really feel for the guys who've made the effort to go along - Banzo's let them and his teammates down. He just can't or won't learn.

Purely hypothetical, but does anyone think a Celtic player would have got a straight red in similar circumstances?

  10. Had the amazing good fortune to be in the area on the last night of our holiday. The figure of 40 Jags fans was about right. One chap had flown in from Amsterdam only 90 minutes earlier. Also among the crowd - 3 FC Koeln fans (still on a high from the previous evening, no doubt) and a wee chap in a Celtic top.

I was there with my wife and two boys. I saw David Beattie walking round before KO and had a quick chat. He then sat in amongst the Jags fans, discussing Piccolo's loan and signing targets (no names that I heard though). Seems we've got enough midfielders, but a couple of CBs and another striker are top of the list. I thought the LB from Wigan looked decent, esp in the 2nd half when he sent over some decent crosses but I didn't really see enough from Magney to form an opinion. I'm glad I know what Ryan Stevenson is capable of, because he didn't make much of an impression last night! Sure there's much more to come from him though when he gets to know his new teammates. McDaid and Duggan played well when they came on. The longer the game went, the more Thistle created and the final score seemed about right to me.

Anyway, long story short, DB took the wee man's top away at the start and presented it to him fully signed by the whole squad at the end. He also brought Dools over for a photo opportunity pitchside at the end. I'm afraid I couldn't resist it and, after my boys had their turn, I hopped over the advertising boards myself for a quick snap. Well, you don't get to meet a Thistle legend every night! Fantastic end to a great holiday for us.
