Yes, to my mind he struggles with coaching players and tweaking systems. I don't believe he conciously make that sub to get the defence higher it was more that he just wanted to get more attackers on the pitch to chase a goal.

His approach to management is very much centred on trying to create competition for spaces and if you don't hit his mark you are out the team. He also seems to have a fairly cavalier attitude to chasing games. Yesterday we ended up 3-2-5 formation which is great if it works but will sometimes cost us a draw or make us suffer a big loss.

BTW - anyone know how Saunders is? He would be a big miss if injured

I don't think caldwell looks to create competition for spaces in this team.  He plays five at the back and so doesn't play with wingers. Our wingers cardle and fitzy will always be on the bench,  doesn't matter what they do in training or when they eventual come on. Cardle came on yesterday not because of the managers tactical brain, But because of mcmillians injury. He then brings on storey yes he can run fast and upset defenders but can he score no. Fitzys on the bench has scored more goals in less minutes on the park than  storey. And again brings him on not as a tactical sub but because of injury and puts him in defence as he said in his interveiw

A game of three thirds with Thistle starting brightly again with Falkirk doing littl of anything for the first 30 minutes. Unfortunately we were unable to make more of apparent superiority at the time as the Bairns awoke from their slumber in the last 15 minutes of the half scoring a decent goal from their POV. They carried their resurgence into the second half with McShane fairly rattling the post. We were certainly off the boil and as mentioned the midfield trio of Bannigan, Spittal and Slater were well off the boil, imo. I think the midweek exertions for both teams took their toll and the last half hour was pretty dire with little in the way of chances. Fitzpatrick and Harkins were fairl anonymous with Storey being the pick of the bunch.

A draw probably the fair result overall but it feels like points dropped rather than one gained. The oil tanker edges forward to Friday in what is looking like a must win game, then again they all are until we can reach 40 points...

To me spittal looked like he was playing in a back five rather than part of the midfield.  When bringing on storey and fitzpatrick I thought Caldwell was going for a win. Then when he brought on Harkins he tould fitzpatrick to move back into spittal position. In his interview Caldwell said he put on negative subs to keep  the draw.  Can't understand this guys tactics

Agree. But the lack of creativity in the team worries me. At least one creative midfielder is badly needed .

We do have a creative midfielder. Fitzpatrick but every time the manager puts him on if ever it's as a striker. Hope the boy leaves this is not a club that can develope anything or anybody at the moment.

And so it continues.....reported Norwich have tabled an offer and The blue filth are monitoring the situation ......but it’s from the Sun

Daily record reporting it now. Another player out the door.

Why? Was he poor when he came on or do you know something we don't?

And spare me the 'Fitzpatrick as saviour' stuff. The lad's clearly not ready for a sustained run in the first XI.

And how do you know he's not ready for a sustained run he's never got one.

Just hoping Gary doesn't turn his tanker 360 degrees. Think darts and stop at 180.

Don't think anyone has yet posted a team for today.

Given the good first half last week, I suspect that the same team will be given the nod to start. Personally I would take out Storey (after his shocking second half showing following on his first half brilliance) and keep him for pace and/or desperation near the end of the game. I would start Erskine (who I am convinced will give his best and is better working his way into a game from the beginning or at least from half-time, but has rarely worked well as a later "impact substitute"), but I appreciate that others might prefer Cardle. I hope that we keep the more attacking roles for both Bannigan and Slater. Assuming that Saunders is now fully fit and that Harkins can last a bit longer, that might give us flexibility for more dynamic substitutions.

My only concern is as to who makes the tackles in the midfield, but you cannot have everything!

Is fitzpatrick not good enough anymore?

I don't think that Caldwell sees him as a regular starter yet and he would clearly want to bring his own men into the squad. Fitzpatrick was always a favorite to be dropped

But caldwell sees storey as a regular starter. That's says everything about caldwell. I thought that bring in his own men ment we were getting rid of the rubbish in my opinion the rubbish are still sitting on that bench and playing on that park. Caldwell took the easy option by benching and dropping the young players rather than dealing with the real problems on that team.

Nonsense, led the line well allowing Quitongo to express himself, the two set ups , one for Quitongo in the first half and the other for Fitzpatrick in the second half were equisite , the only downside were the chances which he possibly should have scored , we looked a different team with Doolan playing from the nonsense of the previous week . He was the only change from the team that played against Morton and made a big difference in how we played  today .

So Doolan was the difference between last week and today, get a grip.  He's a striker who's not scoring end of!

Storey did okay on Saturday.  His pace causes problems and he made a great pass that set up the move for our best chance of the game through Spittal.
Spittal was poor on Saturday but we are short of options.

Fitzpatrick is not ready to start games. Throwing him into a team playing poorly is not what he needs either. I do think he has been unlucky not to feature more from the bench however.

So much for GC's in-depth analysis of the players, fitzpatrick can't even get on the bench.

                                        Bell

    Elliott      Kewon     Mcginty    Melbourne

                  McCarthy       Bannigan

                Spittal    Erskine   Storey

                             Quitongo

Think Penrice may drop to the bench as his form has dipped considerably. Tough to drop Slater out but we need to add a bit of steel to that midfield and  McCarthy would bring that.
Would really like to add Coulibaly to that team but with McCarthy and  Quitongo unlikely to last 90 mins it would be risky to bring another in that will not last the whole game. If we are struggling at halftime and don't see why we can't bring him on. I thought he might have done that against Ayr

So we should drop Penrice because his form has dipped, but still play spittal, erskine, and storey. When did their form ever start?

I think Slater has been one of our better players this season so find it surprising he’s taking a fair bit of criticism on here. Bannigan gets caught on the ball and we lose a goal from it,then yesterday Slater was told to go deep and start play from there because Bannigan kept misplacing passes. Second half Bannigan looked knackered yet escaped with little criticism. Yesterday the goal was lost because of our defenders and Bells inability to clear or catch in his 6yd box. Yet again the midfield is called into question. Then people say Spittal should have took the free kick late on but he’s had a few free kicks and not scored so didn’t see anything wrong in someone else being given the chance. The manager sees our players up close all week and will pick players he obviously feels can do a job, but there’s guys  on here for instance saying we should play Jeffries and Melbourne etc. There’s a reason why these guys haven’t pushed into the starting lineup even when we are struggling and that’s because they’re no better than who’s starting. I do feel sorry for Sneddon though because I think the lad should have kept his place.

I agree Slater has been one of our better players, but there's no way fitzpatrick is no better than some of that staring line up. Storey 49 apps 3 goals striker. Fitzpatrick 8 apps 3 goals midfielder. Come on!!
