I agree with Fearchar …. do we have the GK coach / scout we need? As an example, I wonder if anyone at the club has had a look at Jordan Longmuir [Pollok Juniors GK]. He has better positional sense than Fox and has the ability to organise his defence to his requirements which is another thing Fox has lost recently. I know there is a big difference between Juniors and Championship level of play, but I honestly see a far better keeper in Longmuir than Fox.

I saw the Pollok keeper earlier in the season and didn't rate him. Think the Auchinleck Talbot keeper is better than Fox though. He's proved himself against decent opposition too.

I don't recall McCall playing 3-5-2 much with Ayr so I would agree we are likely to play diamond in a 4-4-2. I suspect it will be like this

                                                Fox

    O'Connell-Saunders-O'Ware-Penrice

                                   MacKinnon

                  Cole                                  Bannigan

                                  Zannatta

                      Rudden           Graham

Hopefully we sign a left sided central defender in which case Saunders drops out and O'Ware moves across. I think Zannatta will play just behind the front players as per Chris Erskine where he may be able to cause a bit more chaos. Its not impossible it becomes a 4-3-3 with Graham in the centre and Rudden and Zannatta either side. I think Zannatta's pace makes him a key component but sticking him on the wing means he has limited chance to influence play.

I think it will be a 352 tomorrow with O'Connor and Graham replacing Robson and Miller who started v Celtic. If it is a diamond in midfield your team could be right but I think Barjonas would maybe start ahead of Zanatta.

I thought Palmer was nearly there. Just a shade short in the combative side of things.  Barjolas is a year or so ahead of Cammy with more first team experience.  So even on a like for like basis we're quids in.

Palmer a League One calibre player just now. I agree with you, Barjonas is a better player.

  4. I like Barjonas as a player, he's neat and tidy but I'm not sure how he'll fit in. Does Saturday's team mean 352 is going to be persevered with? MacKinnon, Cole, Bannigan, Slater and Barjonas as options in centre mid. Couldn't believed that Robson was asked to play right wing back but he did have a better 2nd half. Can they not get someone from the youths that is right footed to play as a wing back though?

    What we expect from Rudden?

    I don't know him

He did well with Falkirk. Not great in the air. At his best inside the box. When things were not going well at Falkirk he wouldn't be averse to arguing with more senior players, granted I only saw him a couple of times though. Hopefully the likes of MacKinnon will help set the right mentality.

Jordan Houston right back of Rangers currently on loan at Ayr (Maybe up by now) rumoured to be joining Thistle on a permanent deal.

I rate this kid. Think he could become a better centre mid than right back. Think he is a better overall player than Kelly of Rangers on loan at Ayr.

Both are just kids and so not in the 'experience will get us out of this (see Anderson)' category.  Lewis a defender and Barjonas a midfielder so neither obvious replacements or filling the most obvious needs (that I can see) for any of the current squad unless they really are as good as their jaundiced supporters views of "both are class (source: WhatsApp)".

Barjonas is a good little player. Saw him play for Raith. He's better than Palmer that's for sure! Maybe Banzo would then play as sole CDM with Cole and Barjonas playing higher up the park?  Then again if the Cammy Smith and Barjonas rumours are true I'm not sure about systems as Smith is a 10.

Part 2 of the event on Wednesday evening here:

    https://ptfc.co.uk/ptfc-news/the-season-ahead-with-gary-caldwell-part-two/

I have been reading here about us having no scouts and there was a little voice in my head saying "I remember something being discussed about scouts" so have a look at this from 1 min 5 seconds in:

    https://ptfc.co.uk/ptfc-news/update-from-the-chairman-and-manager/

Thanks for this Fawlty Towers. I don't understand why there is 3 scouts in England but no set scouts in Scotland just "contacts". What benefits have the Club seen from these 3 scouts in England? Will this be more beneficial to the Club if/when we get back to the Premiership?

Dunno ThistleD, McGinty came through the Manchester United youth academy so unlikely as cambridge is a helluva distance from Manchester.

Bobby Dinnie was head scout for us back in the day. I don't know if he got a wage or if he got a cut of a fee?

I don't think we need scouting of opposition for general games as there is so much TV coverage from even the home clubs recording footage, but I do think we are missing a trick. One of my mates dad was head of scouting for Scotland and north England for Manchester city in the 90's. He got a wage if sorts but got his travel expenses and got into as many games for free due to club reciprocal agreement. Would something like this appeal to ex players who are say over 60 and who have a pension. Their motivation would be that they wouldn't have to put their hands in their own pockets and would be involved in football, kind of idea. Or if they identified a future star they'd get a cut of a transfer fee? Just thinking out loud.

Good shout re ex pro's fella.

Yeah I knew McGinty was at Man U and Torquay sorry I should have quantified my point. I thought the scout from Cambridge was maybe a scout for league 2/conference potential signings?! Sandbank has said that big Conrad recommended McGinty which I didn't know. Hoping for a big season from McGinty.

Scouting used to be the beating heart of clubs like Thistle, is it the academy system everyone has that has ended this? Or do other clubs still have scouting teams.

How do we populate the academy teams if it's not a scouting network that identifies kids playing football for schools, scouts, local boys, clubs etc then approaches the parents with a view to getting their kid sign up for the academy or is the academy full of kids who are if mixed ability cos it's places are paid for by the parents? Genuine question.

When I was much younger I helped coach a kids team in springburn and we had scouts at games fairly regularly. Two of the kids got taken to clubs and eventually made the break through. Can I assure that their respective parents could never have afforded to pay for their kids to attend an academy.

Seems by the sound of it that the scouting in general has fallen by the wayside, if there's no academy scouting or future opposition scouting? Have we not got a scout from the Cambridge area? Maybe he identified the likes of McGinty as a possible signing.

First all not being a Gary Caldwell fan , I have to say he was very eloquent and came across well .

If I was playing Devils Advocate , it looks like he overanalyses things on the park . Seems to be big on fitness which is fine as long as you’ve got ability to go with it . Think the way it was set up with no microphones at the back didn’t help and I think Gary Caldwell and Gerry got off lightly with some of the questions.

Gary Caldwell mentioned his preferred system of 3 - 5 -2  and is obviously big on stats but playing that system you need 2 wing backs who are going to bomb forward and give us width and get assists , last year Penrice had 2 assists , Christie Elliott had 4 , these stats were conveniently not mentioned

Were told that the reserve team was getting scrapped but no mention of how we’re going to fill the void and give the youngsters a pathway to the first team ( Glasgow Cup excepted )

Think they all got off lightly regarding the treatment of Kris Doolan and it’ll be interesting to see who they bring in , at this moment we’ve no strikers and if they bring in 2 or 3 strikers as good as Doolan I’d be surprised.

Training Academy is slightly behind because of Planning etc.

No mention of scouting system apart from a internet scouting system

Give Caldwell credit for fronting up but I’m far from convinced we’re on the right lines .

Can you elaborate more on this internet scouting system? Is this just for potential signings and is it stats based? I wondering if it's like the sort of system Brentford use a la moneyball that costs a few grand.

No mention of scouting future opposition and what the set up is?

Gutted I couldn't make the night, surely it shouldn't have been a surprise that 230 fans would want to go?!
