  1. On the subject of old tennis versus new tennis:

The speed of the game nowadays is much quicker but the rallies are on the whole much shorter and the incessant bouncing of the ball and fiddling with clothing before serving is seemingly endless - players nowadays have umbrellas for shade and seats during the breaks and don't even get their own drinks. Innumerable "toilet breaks" are also a feature nowadays and I doubt any modern day player would dream of wielding a wooden racket!

So yes the comparison is false but for me the days of Laver, Newcombe, Rosewall, Smith, Nastase, and even the year of Kodes and Metrovelli constituted a rather more enjoyable era in tennis than the wham, bam, thank you mam tennis that is on show these days.

Anyhoo - back to football and enough of this strawberries and cream and barley sugar nonsense!!!

  2. Regardless of how the play-off/play-offs go, and personally I’m not sure if we can beat Airdrie and even less sure we can beat Raith (and as for Ross/St Johnstone forget it). To survive in the top division recruitment over the summer would require to be massive, imaginative and, above all, expensive- almost inevitably throwing the club into considerable debt in the hope of surviving a few seasons to recoup the costs of the recruitment.
Much as it would be great to get promoted I’m not sure if the club is ready for such a step in its current financial position.

  3. Assuming Hamilton win the Championship Play-off at the expense of ICT (which I frankly doubt) - then the Championship next season will be a very geographically compact division (assuming we are still in it of course, which I suspect we will). Furthest away trip could be the Raith Rovers (again assuming they don't go up) and the longest distance between any 2 places will be between Ayr and Kirkcaldy.

Truly the "Lowland League" or given that that title is taken perhaps the League could be renamed the "Central Belt Championship".

  4. Dave MacKinnon was an excellent signing and gave us sterling service in the top division. He deserved to be playing at the level he attained with the now defunct Glasgow Rangers and was perhaps unfairly treated by them when the big time Charlies pitched up due to English clubs being banned from Europe post Heysel.
He also overcame health issues whilst at Firhill but thankfully returned stronger than ever.
I’m sure Dundee and Airdrie fans also remember him as a fine player.

  5. Meaningless game yet it’s on the telly - can’t understand why the Inverness or the QP (or a mix of both) games aren’t being shown.

  6. Recently the Archive has reported on 2 games which, in my view (and I still recall them) had  disappointing endings to triumphant evenings - namely winning the 2nd Division (old) title against Queen's Park in 1971 and winning the Glasgow Cup against some other Glasgow team in 1981.

In both instances no post-match victory celebrations occurred. As I recall after the QP game there was actually an announcement which specifically told the fans (almost all of whom had stayed in the ground) to, and I quote "go home!". Whilst at the 1981 game, as reported today - the presentation was made in the tea-room to presumably preclude any reaction from the defeated club's supporters (frankly they probably didn't give a monkey's in any case).

It would be nice to think that such situations, as regards the precluding of the celebration of a PTFC triumph wouldn't happen nowadays (albeit perhaps the probability of any triumph occurring  is perhaps less likely).

  7. Goal up but quickly equalised!

Must admit to having respect for Glasgow City - trailblazers for the women's game until the bigot twins came along with their money (and effectively financially doping the league - but hey ho!).

    Now 3-1 down !!!

    Finished 4-1.

  8. On a totally unrelated theme has anyone any idea why a yellow PTFC flag and purple-ish Partick Thistle Foundation flag were flying over the Jackie Husband this morning?
Just curious and given the strength of the wind I hope they weren’t shredded.

  9. Two things strike me about the hat-trick list - and it's been said before about them.

The Roxburgh one is almost forgotten because of Dan McLindon's solo effort and the Jimmy Bone one against East Fife is probably overshadowed by Denis's 45 yard screamer.

Seems a shame for Roxburgh and Bone as regards quantity being eclipsed by quality.

  10. Have never started a match thread before I presume that victory will bring me kudos for doing so and defeat will pile derision and unbounded bile upon me.
A chance for 4 wins in a row and revenge for the televised torture of a few weeks back?
Mind the weather and beware the possibilities of the Forth Crossing being impacted by high winds for all those attending.

PS I apologise for calling us “Partick” in the thread title but it kinda went with Pars !!
