  1. I suspect he was speaking in the immediate aftermath of bitter disappointment and he just decided to drag everyone down with him.

How many times do fans say “never going back” on the way out of a game after defeat only to pitch up the following week in the hope/expectation/crass stupidity that things will change?

Derek will be ok after Roy has given him a nice cup of warm milk and told him that things will look better by Monday.

D you remember where that game was played? Anniesland?

It was at Firhill and I’ve edited it to correct the year! It was 1971 not 1972 (can’t type)

In hindsight I think it must have been the  4-1 game on March 27 that I was at as I do seem to remember the students scoring and the scorer taking the applause from his fellow students in a rather self effacing - not to say - embarrassed manner!

JeanieD, that would have been the Combined Reserve League. In addition to Glasgow University, other participants included Glasgow Corporation Transport and Jordanhill College. Thistle won both the Autumn and Spring versions of the tournament in 1970-71!!!

From wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_Reserve_Football_League#:~:text=The Combined Reserve Football League, the Scottish Reserve Football League.😞The Combined Reserve Football League was formed in 1958 as a reserve football league for the Scottish Football League Second Division sides that were excluded from the Scottish Reserve Football League.

I believe the Glasgow University game I must have seen was the 2-0 game in Feb 1971 (the first team were drawing 1-1 at Berwick) it certainly wasn’t one sided as far as the score line was concerned but it was one sided as far as the run of play went as far as I can recall with my fading memory.

  4. Used to be a reasonable alternative to go along to a reserve match on a semi-regular basis to see players regaining fitness, or regaining form, or younger players waiting their turn to possibly break into the first team.

I particularly remember the reserve teams that always seemed to start: "Thomson, Holmes and Whittaker" which would nowadays be a pretty good keeper and full-back combination in any Premier League team I might suggest.

Of course, nowadays there are different leagues, age ranges, financial considerations etc, and the concept of a reserve team has, imo, become a bit blurred and, as a result, the results are possibly less relevant.

A great many supporters from - dare I say it - my era would positively delight at the prospect of going along to see the likes of the players mentioned above and others - especially Alf Stamp - who made the pittance of the gate money paid on admission absolutely irrelevant.

Other than the Reserve Cup win(s) I particularly remember a "Combination League"? match against Glasgow University when we were in the second division.  The "away" support easily outnumbered the home support! - although the result was never truly in doubt. As a 9 year old I was particularly disappointed that my late father chose to support his "alma mater" rather than his team of choice but he did assure me it was for that match only!

  5. Personally I thought RR deserved their victory. They hunted in packs whereas we looked like 11 individuals,  and Raith seemed to get more motivated and stronger in the adversity of going behind thus the two late-ish goals.

There seems to be a lack of belief running through us just now - no killer instinct, almost a feeling of feeling sorry for ourselves when we go behind and surprised when we go in front.

  6. Article on BBC website highlights Raith’s recent success with regard to scoring significant late goals. Given our historic generosity late in games I can’t help but worry about the latter stages tonight assuming the game is still relatively close at that time.

  7. Personally I feel that volunteering gives me a bigger "buzz" (to coin an old phrase much in vogue when I was young/less old)  than donating - but there again that might suggest that volunteering for me is more self-seeking than it maybe should be!!!!!

Perhaps there really is no such thing as altruism.

I personally witnessed a majority (6 out of 11) of the above. Can anyone beat that?

Arriving at the game late and missing the goal does not count!

Poor John Gray - scored twice that night but that was the game of Denis’s goal!!

As an aside I saw that goal, Calum’s and Fleck’s so only 3

  9. As an aside I was passing "Lesser Hampden" the other day and noticed it had a large sign outside stating that it was now to be called the "City Stadium" - which seems a bit neglectful of history but isn't nearly as bad as some ground names which have sprung up in recent times.

  10. This might be one for the PT Archive experts but by joining Clyde as manager does that make McCall the first person to have had a connection to the remaining or indeed previous (if you prefer)  "Glasgow" sides.

As far as I know (which might not be much) - he started at Celtic before arriving at Queen's Park then via Dunfermline (not a Glasgow side!) to Glasgow Rangers and ultimately arrived at Firhill after a few detours, culminating in his appointment by Clyde.

His career might be described as either very lucky or very unlucky dependant on your point of view in this regard.
