Good result from Morton today.
On reflection I was wrong to praise the team selection of playing 3 up front. I would still advocate playing 2 up front in a 3-5-2 formation which is what I hoped we would do today to combat Ayr's formation head on!
I think from now on I will leave comment on team selection and tactics to those who know.
The only caveat I would make as regards Morton would be that if they beat us next week they will be 6 points behind us with 2 games in hand - the “prize” of 4th place might become a 3 way tussle.
-
They haven’t conceded in 5 games - going 2 ! behind perhaps not the best move 🤔😂
-
Might be a bit breezy down the coast.
-
Undeserved victory - but happy for those who were brave enough to go along (and have some sympathy for the home support which pitched up)

I have just witnessed one of the most laughable free kicks I have ever seen - comedically bad 😂🙁

Did Flanagan leave after we were confirmed relegatees in early 1970? I thought he'd gone earlier in the season than that. Surprised to see there doesn't appear to be an Archives article on him; he was a good wee player for us.
John departed in October 1970 just after a 1-0 defeat at Brechin. Admittedly this was our last defeat of the season but the team was still “bedding in” and the early results had been a bit mediocre up to that point ( a draw at home to Dumbarton the following week wasn’t really encouraging but after that results started to flow). Perhaps John took the opportunity that seemed a good idea at the time - a few weeks later I saw him score for Clyde against a very good Aberdeen team and his move didn’t seem like a bad one (although Aberdeen scraped a 2-1 win at Shawfield that day).

A few names for the old timers to dwell on from the 1960s Jags.. My memory might not be that great in terms of the clubs they left us for.hey
Neil Duffy (my personal favourite all time Jags player) left us to go to St Johnstone
Ian Cowan (left us to go to Falkirk)
Gordon Whitelaw (to Dundee Utd)
Billy Hainey (to Dundee Utd)
John Flannigan (to Clyde)
Tommy Gibb (to Newcastle Utd)
Sandy Brown (to Everton)
and from a later era:
Alex Forsyth (to Manchester Utd)
Alan Hansen (to Liverpool)
Ronnie Glavin (to Celtic)
Cowan, Duffy and Flannigan as far as I recall had their beat days with the Jags.
Brown and Gibb had mixed success enjoying some good times but never totally convincing the fans that they were the real deal.
Whitelaw, Hainey, Forsyth and Glavin all enjoyed success with their new clubs and definitively played at a higher level
Alan Hansen - became a Liverpool legend!
I am sure the above list can be added to and my views debated. But isn't that football!!
As regards John Flanagan his departure was, as I remember, rather acrimonious insofar as he perhaps thought he was better than a second division player. He was a good enough player - indeed one of my favourites in the relegated 69-70 team - but perhaps jumped too soon? In hindsight a League Cup winners medal and not being relegated with Clyde that same season might have been a better reward. Maybe “doing well” post Thistle might not be the most appropriate thread given the above?

16 games possible 48 points
current form perhaps 12-15 points?
perhaps more realistically 15-22 points - 4, 5 or 6 wins - 4, 5 or 6 draws - 7, 8 or 9 defeats
-
With any luck the game on Friday could be iced off (Clyde’s game was on yesterday I know but the forecast is pretty poor for the rest of the week - especially Friday). Then another blank week due to Cup elimination so potentially a 3 week break which I think some might welcome?
-
Attendance 3,938 apparently- freezing day miserable conditions to get there but will there be a higher home attendance in the rest of the season? Given our plight the financial damage of such a result is almost the worst aspect of today.

I thought Dunfermline looked a reasonable side against Falkirk in the 3-3 game recently so this isn’t really a surprise given we are highly average at best.
-
We perhaps stole a win against Queens Park so it all balances out in the end ……………sometimes

The club didn’t release the top, the Jags Foundation did. The club and SPFL allowed us to wear it for this game where TJF have also taken full hospitality for 180 members.
Fair enough, it’s was just a passing observation. It is a nice gesture albeit I still think the strip isn’t quite of the Auld era.

Perhaps the article needs a bit more careful reading?
Special dispensation for an unnecessary 4th strip then?
-
Perhaps time is confusing my old brain but my memory of the strip of that era was that the stripes were chubbier and the middle one at the front was red.
Tomorrow’s replica is ok but a 4th strip? ……….isn’t that a bit unnecessary? In fairness they do say “reminiscent” of the Auld era strip so I am perhaps being churlish as regards detail!🤔🤒

If Dunfermline play the same way they played when they went goals behind against Falkirk last week then it will be another tight game - new manager or not.
-
First time a late goal has done for us in a while - used to happen a lot but it’s relatively rarity makes it all the worse!
-
High tide at Greenock is at 1243 tomorrow just FYI
-
It would be nice - albeit surprising - if this game was postponed as early as possible.

Take a point?

Enough of this Tranche warfare - Christmas truce should be permanent

Ayr United ⚪️⚫️ vs Partick Thistle 🔴🟡

As others on here have posted, it is certainly the case that performances have been very poor - but equally alarmingly our league position is actually better than these dire performances deserve (in my opinion).
In the relatively recent past our performances were generally ok but utterly ruined by the concession of a plethora of late goals. Crushingly disappointing but at least the general play was ok. We seem to have regressed and, again only in my view and as stated above, have accrued more points this season than we deserve (eg Ayr at home, Hamilton at their place a fortnight ago, Dunfermline home and away).
Personally not convinced a change in manager - other than the “dead dog bounce” we might get for the first few games - is the answer. Similarly not convinced of the current corporate structure at the club but again unsure if a change would necessarily result in improvements in investments both on and off the park.
Sadly I cannot offer any enlightened solution to this current malaise but suspect that the next 3 months might be a painful watch.
