Having an academy also creates future supporters, even if they don't make the first team. Not just the kids, but parents and friends can become regular supporters.

Considerations such as funding an Academy and bringing scouting in-house (vs outsourcing) should be based on overall economic value - not just sticker price - for reasons exactly such as this.

On the balance sheet, I suspect the Academy is a loss for us.  But community value, the part it plays in keeping us regarded as a serious club, and other benefits can’t be ignored.  And these won’t show up as line items on the financials but they are undeniably present.

  2. Derek Adams is a sports journo’s dream.

”Thanks Gaffer, as a follow-up question, could I get you to dig yourself a deeper hole?”

”Why yes, thank you for asking.  The entire club, its supporters and families, are shite.”

  3. So can these 8 pages be summed up as:

    1) Ideally the prior year losses would be offset by a plan to reduce operating costs or increase revenue through “normal trading”.

    2) JJ has not seen a comprehensive plan as outlined in #1 above.  It could be argued that one doesn’t exist.  Yet.  Hopefully.

    3) The TJF money is good and valid, but it shouldn’t need to be used to paper over the aforementioned losses.  Those losses should be reduced through generation of increased “normal” (read: coming from operations) revenue or reduction in operating costs

    4) The USA money is either highly welcome, or somewhat contentious, due to the urgent cash flow situation we were in and the issuance of shares/board position that accompany it.  Only a select few will know how truly bad things were that necessitated the decision, which hopefully will be a one-time only deal once the CTA is in place and beneficiaries are consulted on such matters going forward.

    5) We all agree the toilets need fixing - first the women’s then the men’s.  LIB has been suspiciously quiet about the toilets while the menfolk fight this battle.  This underscores the forum power dynamic and indicates she’s really the one who runs things here.

Hopefully that all covers it and we can all go get a beer.  I’ll be back over in November around the US Thanksgiving holiday and will buy the first round.

What an utterly dismissive statement to make - we got 10% increase last year without “Investing Anything” so what your admitting is that

    a) Fan Growth has nothing to do with the Club Board -and there is no strategy or resource put behind it

    b) That you are justifying Investment & Resource in Hospitality because it gets a better return -than Growing the Fan Base ( with no actual numbers to support this theory )

Now Woodland Jag has argued strongly that the Board have some sort of plan to address Revenues -and put us in Breakeven. ( Ive argued the opposite )  Ive given him and TJF a hard time saying there propping up something thats not sustainable

The complacency of the statement on Fan Growth -shows beyond any doubt that there is no plan on any level and a fundamental lack of understanding as to where the Club Revenues come from

I don’t see too much unreasonable with wanting a Club Board to understand club revenue sources and build a plan to maximize those.

    Two questions:

    1) Is it unreasonable for the board to not have a super comprehensive plan on this yet given that it’s been in flux for some time?

    2) Are you more or less confident in the current board than you were with the board that ran us into 300k losses?  Or does it remain to be seen?

McGuigan came through the university team at Edinburgh.

To put a damper on it, we tried years ago to bring students and Freshers to Firhill and it failed pretty miserably. It's not a long term solution in any case. Students are only on campus around 25 weeks of the year and tend to return home when their 4 years are over.

That’s a fair point.  I wasn’t sure if Glasgow Uni students stayed local for breaks and holidays.

Still, I could see potential because there’s a continuing cycle of students.  Maybe give international students free or discounted Jagzone/PPV so they can continue supporting after they graduate? (Edit to add:  Just a year after they graduate)

Ive pumped a decent amount of cash into Thistle despite not being remotely local.  Building that bond is definitely possible.

  6. Also I’d just like to point out that we’ve had more discussion about women’s sanitary products (and their availability) this week than at any point in my time on the forum.  That’s probably progress.

At the risk of being crass, but in the interest of notoriety, I’d like to be the first to openly say the word….

    Tampons.

Thistle Archive Admin, please record this day for posterity.  Thank you.

The obvious way to promote the club at the 3 Glasgow universities would be a stall at the year start Freshers Week in September.  Too late for this season, but good for the future.

Some support or interest in the universities' football teams (male and female) may also produce dividends.

Why wait?  I’d say get in there now.  I like the idea about some kind of partnership with the Uni team.  Did McGuigan not come to us from a Uni team?

  8. Are there any Scottish clubs - fan-owned or not - that have significantly been able to increase their fan base?  Or that have been able to sustain smaller upward trends year over year?  And how closely did these trends coincide with performance on the pitch?

Glasgow seems like a potentially unique challenge - lots of competition for your entertainment dollar, er, pound, compared to other locales.

OK stop saying “investment” we sold off Assetts to get Cash in to Cover our losses its as simple as that

I’m a little fuzzy on your definition of “investment” because buying/selling shares of a company in a cash transaction is precisely what investing is.  Unless we sold other assets I’m not aware of?

  10. I think JJ has a point.  Simply put, I would like to know what our board’s approach to budgeting is, given the loss incurred from last season and the need to constantly marry promotion ambitions with sustainability.  Are there scenarios in which we take calculated risks (e.g., if DU goes up but a club like Livi - who likely wouldn’t overspend to go back up - comes down, do we “go for it” and spend a little more ourselves?)

I am willing to accept that the position was so dire that we needed urgent funding to stabilize things, but I’d like to be reassured that this isn’t the go-forward plan.  I’d prefer the majority of McClymont’s money be used as a safety net or an investment into something revenue generating, not the player budget.

Side question - was there a web conferencing component to this AGM?   Or was it only available to direct shareholders and not beneficiaries?

  11. If ever a Thistle team has been cemented into a specific spot in the table, it’s this one.

Glimmers of greatness that we can’t seem to sustain, which is still more than half the league can offer.

    Onwards and hopefully upwards.

So have the management resigned themselves to another season in the championship or do they have other more short term targets?

Honestly that would be the smart thing to do - use the rest of this season to try bedding in some new signings for next season while trying to maintain a playoff spot.

That looks like a sensible "Devil's advocate" question to me. It raises the question about whether fans' forums need to (or should) be informed of all the details that are going on at the club.

And then, could misinformation be deliberately released.?......   And then could counter-misinformation be put out by rivals..... etc. etc. ?

    Ma heid's buzzled!

My guess is the closest we’ll come to seeing those figures is in the “other operating income” line of the income statement.  And even then it probably will be lumped in with other income so we won’t know the exact amount.

I kind of doubt players would be demanding more money due to the results.  A player who signed a contract should have accepted no less than market value (or a combination of market value and personal value, which is what I suspect Lawless might have done - agreeing to less money because he loves being here).

Diack showed more in his cameo last night, Adeloye barely moved.

Adeloye’s MO seems to be getting into the box and backing down his defender, which he’s pretty good at.

But at this point, if we have our own Academy kids that show ability at this level, as Diack did, we probably need to be playing them more. (I’d also love to see Zander McKenzie played in whatever his preferred position is)

If we can maintain some distance between 3rd and 4th, I hope Dools takes advantage of this by playing the kids.
