  1. Got all the outfield players by memory and by a process of elimination can only find one match these outfield players played together. I reckon it's away to Blackpool on 5 August 1967. Had to admit defeat about the keeper however. He only played a handfull of matches but won't name him in case anyone else wants to have a guess.

  2. Agreed. All the players mentioned played in 4 games at Firhill v St Mirren. Bone played in all 4:-

    18.11.78

    and

    31.3.79

    31.1.81

    6.2.82

On the basis that Thistle's shorts look "less black" than St Mirren's, I assume they are red so that probably rules out Nov 78. (Red shorts 79-83.)

Nothing much else to go on. All played at roughly the same time of the year. Pitch/Weather no help.

  3. ^ Thanks afk, that's highly illustrative. "Bertie roolz ok". And at least Archie has never been a "never"! As a matter of interest (probably only to me) was your root source the Statto tables for game finish positions? I wouldn't mind seeing how those figures change if you stuck with "Top 6" all the way as opposed to "Top half". I remember looking at this Top 6 business in Zatafact when I noted: "Thistle, on average, finish the season as Scotland's 11th most succesful League club. This represents a sharp decline in fortunes since the Jags were relegated from the Premier League in 1981-82. At that time, Thistle finished, on average, as Scotland's 9th most succesful League club. The Top 6 feat seems to be very much the preserve of the old school Thistle." http://www.wearethistle.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/8327-zatafact-140-seasons-of-the-indomitable-p-t-f-c/page__view__findpost__p__149649

Courtesy of Mr Satto. The seasons that were 10 teams rather than 12 showing top 6 rather than top 5 were:-

    76/77.....7

    77/78.....20

    78/79.....22

    79/80.....16

    80/81.....23

    81/82.....1

    94/95.....2

    95/96.....5

  4. Talk of the top 6...............

Including last night, Thistle have played 513 games in the Prem League/SPL/SPFL. Only on 96 occasions (19%) have the tables shown us in the top half of either a 10 or a 12 team league after each match. By far the most successful time was out first stint. Since then it's true that we have seldom troubled the scorers as the figures below illustrate. If we are measured against teams such as Kilmarnock and St Johnstone then there does appear to be a problem with establishing ourselves as a top-flight team with realistic ambitions to finish mid-table. We have finished 5th only once in a 10-team league and never better than 8th in a 12-team league.

  5. Thought at first it was Raith Rovers at Starks Park but the logo on the strip is the clue ie, "Kelly Copiers".

Think it's Chico scoring at Dens Park on 25 Aug 1990 in a 1-1 draw. Davie Elliott in attendance.

Duncan, Robertson, Elliott, Duffy, Peebles, Tierney, Law, Campbell, McGlashan, Flood, Charnley (English and Gallagher).

  6. Good call Stu. Could be Bayview.

Found some old photos of the ground and the building to the right of the stand looks to fit the bill but either before or after this match, the floodlights were on vertical poles along the pitch in the photo.

Still, if we go with Charlie Smith, Johnny Gibson, Nobby Clark and Frank Coulston it can only be 15 Aug 1970. LC 1-1. The only game all 4 played in at Bayview.

3 Oct 1970 will give you Smith, Clark and Coulston. 2nd Div 0-0.

18 Aug 1971 you can have Clark and Coulston. L Cup 3-2.

    4 Dec 1971 shows just Coulston. 1st Div 3-1.

20 Sep 1972 shows Clark and Coulston. L Cup 0-1.

28 Oct 1972 shows Clark, Gibson, Coulston. 1st Div 1-0.

  7. Don't remember too many grounds that had the floodlights on stalks above stand/enclosure but I'll open the bidding and say it's Rugby Park - although not sure why Kilmarnock would be playing in white.

Could be Billy Cunningham running back which would make it one of 7 matches between between 60-61 and 68-69. Don't recognise anyone else so very little to go on.

  8. A'm no playin' any more!

You're quite right. Not Firhill. 29 December 1979 was the only time the identified players played at Cappielow.

3-1 win Melrose (2) and McAdam. Hutchison for Morton

Rough, MacKinnon, Whittaker, Campbell, McAdam, Anderson, Doyle (J), Melrose, O'Hara, Gibson, Park (Jardine).

(Still think it's Doyle on the line however.)

  9. That's pretty impressive, afc. Title gives it as Firhill, 1915, vs. Aberdeen. Feck it,....I'm gonna take a look at the squads and have a go at identifying the two Jags. ETA: There is no squad photo for that season (in the official history book), so maybe forever a mystery. The squad photo for season 1917-18 identifies only Alec Raisbeck, but all the players are identified for season 1920-21, and three outfield players played in that Aberdeen match in 1915: Hamilton, McMullan, and Bowie. No obvious likenesses with the players in the above photo, however.

A wild guess but could one of them be Willie Whittle? He played in both home games in 1915. I assume the Thistle players are forwards! Look at his photo on page 45 of the OH.

  10. Agreed. Forgot about the dogs. Still think it's a dead ringer for Cunningham - but it can't be!

Ormond played in 10 games at Firhill between Sept 1949 and March 1956. Haven't looked any later than that because the dog racing stopped sometime in 1954 so presumably by 1956 the poles had been taken down.

In 8 of these games McGowan was No 2. Kerr once and Husband once.

Ledgerwood was the keeper in 7, Smith twice and Henderson once.

    The dates are:-

    21.1.50, 19.1.52, 13.12.52, 18.12.54 (but it doesn't look like December/January)

    17.9.49

    20.4.51

    11.8.51

    9.8.52

    20.2.54

    31 3.56

Perhaps narrows it down to a possible 6. Anyone else?

  11. The easiest way to identify the match and the Thistle players here is probably to start with the non-Thistle player!

ETA: That's not a young Archie in the background.

    vs_Hibs_56.png

Could be way off here but I'll start the bidding with Willie Ormond playing for Hibs. Not certain it's Firhill. (What are these vertical poles? No floodlights on the roof.) Easter Road?

Looks like Billy Cunningham in the background but can't find a match these two played in to narrow things down.

  12. As far back as scorers are known (roughly 1880s), when Chris Doolan scored his 4th goal last night he became the 28th player to score 4 or more goals in a match for Thistle's first team (all competitions and friendlies). This has been achieved 45 times:-

    Player scored 9 - once

    Player scored 6 - twice

    Player scored 5 - 8 times

    Player scored 4 - 34 times

Guess which team has had it happen to them most often......

  13. Spot on, AFK. Though as it was season 1954-55, an August League Cup came would have been in 1954. The other player certainly looks like Gibb from his squad photo.

Kerr really seems to have been Mr. Versatility for us. In his 253 games he played at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, moving from being a full-back/centre-half/wing-half to being the No. 1 choice as centre forward for the entire 1958-59 season.

Life would be simpler if calendar years ran from 1 August to 31 July!

  14. Defo Shawfield.

So was the previous pic from a friendly or challenge mark against Tottenham Hotspur?

Matches home and away against Newcastle, Hearts, Hibs, Spurs and Manchester City were planned as part of an Anglo-Scottish Floodlight League but the SFL ordered the clubs to withdraw because it was not an existing competition (rather, it had been "invented" for the purpose and the SFL couldn't have that). Some of the games did take place but had to be billed as friendlies and the tournament came to nothing.

This spawned a new rule ("Rule 67") forbidding any member club from participating in any competition not sanctioned by the league.

  15. The next three are oldies but goodies from Stu Jag's site. The oldies on the forum should easily recognise the ground here. Any other info? GW430_6.jpg

Definitely Shawfield. Hellish place to watch a game. Lights obscured the view, terracing steps were "shallow", pitch was narrow and the game was all throw-ins.

Number 6 is Andy Kerr. Thankfully his number is showing and although he played at Shawfield 5 times, he only played once at left-half.

28 August 1955 in the League Cup (0-2).

Ledgerwood, McGowan, Gibb, Thomson, Davidson, Kerr, McKenzie, Harvey, Crowe, Wright, Henderson.

Could the other Thistle player be Bobby Gibb?

  16. I don't remember seeing this one before. Taken from Stu Jag's site:

An interesting one for the identification sleuths.

    Spurs_Away.jpg

My guess is that it's Tottenham Hotspur at the Lane. White shirts, dark shorts and the logo on the stand roof.

    So that makes it 26 Sept 1956 (1-4) or 1 March 1958 (1-4).

Given the mud in the box, looks like March. Davie Mathers standing with his legs apart. (He played in both games.) Willie Crawford just over his left shoulder? Could be Dougie Baird on the line but can't do any better. Team that day was:-

Ledgerwood, Hogan, Baird, Mathers, Crawford, Donlevy, Smith, Wright, Kerr, McParland, Ewing.

  17. Recognise McKinnon, and Duncan. Makes it one of only 6 games at Celtic Park. Doesn't look like Nov 66, Dec 66 and 69 or Jan 69 (grass, weather etc). Reduces the options to 2..................

    17 August 1968 LC 0-4

    or

    15 March 1969 L 0-1

Recognise Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Connelly and Gemmell. Marrying up the Celtic numbers that are visible with teams in the press means it is likely to be 17 August 1968. If so, No 7 for Thistle looks like McLindon from the back.

Ritchie, Cumming, Brown, Cunningham, McKinnon, O'Neill, McLindon, Bone, Coulson, Flanagan, Duncan (Gallagher).

Simpson, Gemmell, O'Neill, Murdoch, McNeill, Brogan, Johnstone, Connelly, Wallace, Lennox, Hughes (Auld).

Looks like Flannigan being crowded out. Have a notion the other Thistle player might be either Gallagher on as a sub or Cumming - purely on the basis that it doesn't look like any of the rest of them. Can't put a name to the face.

  18. Same here. My immediate reaction was that it was Jim Gallacher in goal. If so, that makes it Clydebank.

Background is no help. Don't recognise the adverts. It could be Kilbowie.

If the strip makes it season 1987-88 then unfortunately Thistle played Clydebank 6 times that season - 3 at home, 3 away and Eddie Gallagher played in all 6 of them.

If that's him scoring then it can only be 28 Nov (A), 20 Feb (A) or 23 Feb (H).

    If not, it's 22 Aug (A), 3 Oct (H) or 27 Feb (H).
