  1. Think that's a bit harsh on Erskine. Queens dealt with our midfield very well. Erskine stepped up a gear in extra time and with him, Doolan, Forbes and Elliott on the park we started to look a little more of a threat, something we failed in the opening 90 minutes. This could be because both teams tired and a handful of our players didn't (as a handful of Queens also didn't).

I hope you are right mate and you probably are but the thought did cross my mind and it's not beyond the realms of possibility. But right now what we need is positivity so I will withdraw that thought and go with your own more trusting and positive explanation.
  2. Interesting BBC gossip said "Erskine is destined to join Paton who has already signed a pre-contract" this morning, and now the Paton part has been removed.

Could this explain Erskine's performance yesterday where he was non existent? If you are guaranteed a move elsewhere are you not more likely to make sure you don't end up with an injury. If Archie knows he is definitely for the off then he may well leave him out of the side and replace him with someone who is fighting for a new contract.

  3. Read my post again. I was in no way condoning football hooligans - I've been about long enough to have seen the so-called casual firms in action; to include those of the Thistle variety. Wasn't my thing then and certainly not my thing now. Point I was trying to make (badly) was that the fans (best term I can use) I spoke to were up to support Thistle and claimed to have been to few games; that's all I can report back - if you know better then I bow to your superior knowledge and feel free to tell of their plans to riot etc. As far as I'm aware, nothing happened involving the Spurs fans and the young fans who ran onto the park were most definitely our young, erm, casuals. I see them week in week out at games.

With regard to the Spurs casuals leaving early, to be quite honest I missed this as I was too busy watching the game and trying to get the team to raise their game. A pointless exercise given how we played yesterday. But if you and a few others were transfixed by a few Londoners in our ranks then your call. For reasons unknown, the protocol among casuals has always been to leave en mass before the end of a game. Is this to draw attention to themselves? Who knows and who cares?

Returning to the nice young casual I spoke to, he was actually a Mod; but maybe some of his chums were more casual like. I didn't check the labels on their clothing. But I do agree that there should be NO place for football hooligans at Firhill. Will we ever get rid of those who enjoy causing trouble - and I include a few Thistle fans in this category, probably not.

    Hope this clarifies matters...

I do accept that you are not condoning football hooligans at games and glad that you emphasised that point of view. For myself, I reiterate the point that whilst welcoming anyone who wishes to come along and genuinely support the Jags we should still be vigilant against the rogue element and that means not lamely accepting any banner being unfurled particularly on national TV (42 years from now). Again, would people have been so relaxed if a banner from either side of the OF was draped over an exit simply because they had a soft spot for the Jags. I don't think so? But I am sure your conversation with with the young Mod was fine and hope you were able to drown your sorrows like the rest of us.
  4. Whatever pleases you mate. Fact is they came up to support Thistle and that happens to be their flag. I'm not a fan of the so-called casuals but did speak to one or two in a boozer after the game and they seemed fine. To be honest, I've a spot spot for Spurs and try to get down once or twice a season - similar soft spot for Ajax. Of Engerlish teams, Spurs in particular have nothing in common with the far-right elements in English football. In fact they are hated by most clubs. You'll maybe remember west Ham fans and their hissing noises to denote the gas chambers at Auschwitz etc.

To be honest, I find your comments quite xenophobic and not really what i'd expect from a Jags fan. next time you're at a game listen for a few moments and I'm sure you'll hear many English accents. After recent events, to be hopefully joined by a few welsh fans who seemed to enjoy the atmosphere. But not for you, you'll be asking for proof of place of birth and Scotashness!!

Closing point is that the casuals get singled out for things they don't really do i.e. was there any trouble yesterday? I understand a few Aberdeen fans came down to support us - gather it's the Thistle in the middle thing; but no mention of them. And what of the sizable Mod contingent who lead the singing? Do you not like them either? Not enough tartan army outfits? I despair!

It seems YOU are easily pleased mate. So you spoke to a nice casual in a pub who seemed fine therefore we should just ignore the whole casual culture which historically has got nothing to do with football and more to do with aggro. If they are there to lend their support why leave such a tightly balanced game well before the end? Was the action they were looking for not up to scratch? It's nothing to do with being English. Had Aberdeen casuals put up their banner that too would have been unacceptable or how about a big banner with Rangers/Chelsea? Don't be so naive, the connotations are obvious as well documented in other posts. Thistle fans should distance themselves from this contingent completely.

  5. guy in front of me ripped it down at half time. ppl singing wrong club wrong flag.

Well done to that guy. That banner was really getting on my wick. nothing to do with Thistle and put up by a couple of casuals, although helped to do so by genuine Jags fans. What was that all about?

  6. As we all know Forbes has an excellent delivery but I do feel he is a bit of a luxury player who is good to watch when you are winning. At this stage we need people to battle and chase back as well as playing the glossy stuff we have produced all season. I would keep him in on the bench at the moment.

  7. Impossible to predict, i am a bloody nervous wreck!

This made me go into hysterics with nervous laughter. It summed up how I feel just now. Almost every waking minute has me reliving goals, near misses, juggling permutations and my stomach is in a constant knot. Wouldn't swap it for anything. Brilliant Jags, brilliant!!
  8. Rough, Hansen and Forsyth were better than Fox, O'Donnell and Sinclair, in my opinion, but Muirhead and Balatoni are clearly better players than Campbell and Strachan (even allowing for Jackie Campbell being a Thistle legend!) Bannigan would have got in before Alex Rae, I think, but none of our other current midfielders would have kept Ronnie Glavin out of the team. As for the forwards, Erskine and McQuade are pretty much interchangable - and that says a lot coming from me - but I think Coulston, Bone and Lawrie would hold their places before any of our current forwards.

But the comparisons are completely valid - this side IS as good as that. IF we can keep most of them together (and even accepting the apparently inevitable loss of Paton and Erskine) I think we could really make our mark on the top division, whatever it ends up being called.

Excellent post. I have been running the comparisons around my head between the two teams for weeks now and agree with everything you have said. However I would add that the current team has been consistently the most exciting and enjoyable I have had the pleasure to watch in 45 years. It makes you realise what it must be like to be an OF fan when playing at home i.e. even when you go behind you still fully expect to come back and win comfortably. Brilliant stuff!!
