A prerequisite for a professional football player is to work hard for their team mates and that’s where Fitzy lets himself down , strolled about the park tonight contributing next to nothing with absolutely no work ethic .

If you take Harry Milne tonight , had a torrid first 20 minutes but still showed for the ball and worked his bollocks off for the good of our Club and eventually came on to a game .

    Will Fitzy ever change?

The work ethic thing. I'd like to see how the stats compare across the team. Compare Fitzpatrick to Neilson for example? I sometimes think Fitzpatrick gets undue criticism because we know what he's capable of.

  2. I was watching highlights from the Queens Park and Ayr United play-off games at lunch time - what a glorious run of games that was! Having Fitzpatrick, Tiffoney, Lawless, Turner and McMillan all in top form, and everyone else chipping in, including supporters - one of those few and far between times.

Not going to happen this time... Alway live in hope though!

Not sure Crawford would cut it in the Premiership. Tongue in cheek maybe, but I'm uncertain how we can be offering terms when we don't know what division we'll be in. I can see some players dropping down to being considered squad players if we were to go up. These players tho' would be regular starters in our current division. Certainly Crawford currently qualifies at that level. Again even putting our unknown league status aside,Β  I'm wondering whether signing a central midfielder is that much of a priority

I think it's a bit of a juggling act and you can't leave all recruitment until the outcome of the playoffs is known. Maybe there's some conditional contract terms - additional payments if we end up in top division sort of thing.

I think it makes good sense to get a few players in early, especially players like Crawford who are obvious targets for clubs in top half of the championship. Yes it's a gamble, but on balance of probability, a gamble that's more likely to pay off than not.

Iirc Tomi wasn't very popular down at Swindon.Β

I wouldn't mind seeing him at Firhill next season but that depends on what league we're in. And in general this is a downside to these extended (possibly) play offs. Players at our current level tend to value security and any protracted delay is undermining. Clubs like Dunfermline, Ayr, Morton will have already joined Falkirk in preparation for next season.Β

I think this a significant drawback of getting in to the playoffs. Once again we'll be playing player recruitment catch-up. Not just because of the uncertainty but also because the management team will rightly be focused on other things.

As for Tomi - he's a great option to have around. I'd be happy see him sign.

Feel sorry for young Stanway his first league goal and it now counts for nothing..

Suspect quite a few players scored their first league goal in a defeat. Sure he'll remember it regardless of the scoreline.

  6. Very end of season dead rubber feel to that. Midfield had no control and gave them lots of free yards. I've yet to see Neilson play well there - his distribution was better when he played at centre-half. The stats don't lie though - the current defensive arrangement is working very well.

  7. Happy with a point although the sooner we secure a play-off place, the better, so we can regroup and potentially rest players. Get the feeling we're now running on fumes and Stevie went off injured today apparently.

Oh and why did it take so long for Mitchell to get back in the team? He has his faults but I concluded yonks ago that we are more solid defensively when plays. Added to fact his distribution is tons better.

  8. Fitzpatrick didn't have his best game, however he nearly scored and made a couple of chances, unlike some other attacking players.

He is very obviously a confidence player. You can see him berating himself when things don't come off. I think that's the attitude problem - not backing himself and letting his head go down. Needs to learn to stay positive regardless how he's playing.

  9. Just about worth the win because we had the more clearcut chances. But a disjointed performance and thought we would pay for one of the many free kicks we gave them.

McBeth great in defence but don't think Neilson in midfield works. Game seemed to pass him by.

Oh and wish the bloke who sits somewhere behind a moans about Doolan never being a manager would give it a rest.

  10. Okay. Downvote rescinded now you've explained what you meant. Your initial comment came across as just being a very negative write off of a young player.

Hope James continues to progress - he comes across as likeable with a good attitude.

I'm going against the grain here - but that was a poor performance by a team that could and should be doing much better against such poor opposition. Winning by 1 goal in three isn't nearly good enough, and only by dint of a good save did we not come away with another draw after going 2 up.

<rant> This passing along the back line is wasting time that should be spent getting the ball up the park to where it threatens the opposition, among our most effective players, the goal scorers. Instead, our heroes seem to suffer from the delusion that they're displaying the talents of Real Madrid to the yokels and wearing them down: sorry, boys, but you aren't at that level - not even in work rate, and it shows in the huge number of goals you concede. Yet another clean sheet thrown away today.

As for throw-ins, we shouldn't complain about the opposition being smarter, but learn from them: why don't we use long throw-ins? Is none of these players capable of throwing a ball into the box or, for that matter, to one of our own players? By all appearances, that is the case. There certainly doesn't seem to be any work on throw-ins during training, let alone thought given to the most common set piece in the game. :wall:

Fitzgerald is obviously crocked but is still being played although he's slower than usual and in discomfort, if not pain. Why isn't he being given time to recover?

We and everyone else in the division knows that this team is suspect when high balls come into the box, but instead of ensuring there's an out ball (!) and breaking quickly to relieve the pressure, which they showed today they're capable of, they cling on to the ball in defence, allowing the opposition to get organised for the oh-so-predictable attack down one wing, followed by the cross in. As for free kicks into the box and corners.... Why bother? No imagination; no speed; only Robinson and Graham seem prepared to pounce on opportunities as they occur. (Since the game against ICT, Robinson has provided much-needed tenacity in the centre.)

As for bringing has-been Bannigan on... Well, he conceded a needless free kick and the team conceded a goal after that subsitution: enough said.

Our defence is still honking, despite finally arriving at a centre-back pairing that seems effective. Why? Because both full-backs think they're really wingers born in the wrong bodies (or something like that).Β  After all this time, Milne still can't trap for toffee, and McMillan regularly gets stranded upfield while the opposition breaks - leaving Lawless to fill in at right-back. Both full-backs also need to be made aware that they should - must - be able to play with either foot, or be caught out time and time again.

    </rant>

I remember I used to go to clubs and moan about the music until a friend asked why I went if I didn't enjoy it. It was a fair point - I stopped going to clubs.

The point being if you get so little enjoyment from watching Thistle, that your primary reaction from our first win in two months or so is as above, you perhaps need to find something else to do on a Saturday afternoon.

Unless of course you enjoy being angry, in which case fill your boots.

  12. Good to get the win. Morton are so one dimensional, although it's been working for them.

Performance was good enough and thankfully the pitch wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting. We should start to see it improve now, which will hopefully help Fitz and Stevie.

  13. Definitely should be winning this. And I know it's not a popular view but I don't think we were too far off it on Tues evening.

My main concern is the pitch which will make it difficult to move the ball quickly - where it's reasonable to expect us to have the advantage over Morton.

I also don't think experimenting with players in unnatural positions is the way to go - it might have positive impact, but on the balance of probability it's more likely not to work out.

Play the best players available in their natural positions, focus on getting the basics right, concentrate on the job in hand, keep the heid and results will come.

Just not sure about tomorrow because of that pitch ...
