  1. Melbourne Heart are the new team this season, eh? I'll pencil that one in then. The All Whites/Paraguay game is on the Tuesday...

Yea we can't let the new kids beat us at home! They did get their first win last week and they're not a bad team really, a few A-League campaigners in the squad. You've got our number I think just let us know if you're gonna make it and we'll sort out a beer before or after the game :)

As for the All Whites game, would love to be there but being a weekday.. stupid employment...

  2. Did you get them mounted, framed and hung? ;-)

I managed along to the Central Coast game yesterday. I reckon Thistle could make a good fist of it in this league - just not the current team!

We're going to be in Welly for the Melbourne Heart game (Oct 17) kind of as a birthday present for little bro-in-law (15) - Sunday evening game hopefully a nice day! Anyone going or keen to go also?

  3. Got to disagree here, although it was a bit of a soft one it was a penalty and New Zealand can have no real complaints. The Italian was trying to run forward and the NZ guy got a firm grip on the guys top and pulls him back, when the NZ player releases the shirt the Itailians momentum caused him to go down (he made it look worse than it was though). Think about it, if you are trying to run forward and someone tugs your shirt you will lurch forward when the 'tugger' lets you go, thus causing you to lose balance.

Yep I feel ya, however watching the replay in slow motion, it's a long time between the shirt being let go and him going down, there was nowhere near enough in the shirt tug for that kind of dive. I do understand the physics of what you're saying, but there's another factor in this equation - hence the quote. It's not the penalty that I'm annoyed about, it's the way the Italians were so quick to go to ground (they're not the only ones guilty of this of course) throughout the entire match. Every time our forwards (Killen and Fallon in particular) came within three feet of the ball, the nearest Italian player clutched his face and fell to the ground. The pre-match predictions were that it would be men against boys. I question who those terms should refer to.

As for Smeltz being offside when we scored, yea he sure was  However there is a difference between benefiting from a bad call and downright cheating. In real time I don't think anybody saw that there was a slight deflection off Winston Reid's head, except Reid himself of course.

  4. I saw that with the sound down at a mate's house. That was a full-on drag the fellow back proper shirt hold. Totally cheating. Players should walk for shirt pulling as well. I hate Italian cheating and I'm really bitter and prejudiced against the toerags, but even I would concede that the ref was right.

Not denying that there was a foul there, but the way he fully milked it and threw himself to the ground like he'd been assaulted was disgusting. Don't agree that it was a "full-on drag the fellow back shirt hold" though, no worse than the 1000 other times it has happened in this tournament without punishment and even if it was, that doesn't make someone fall forwards. Hence that quote.

  5. I should be able to make that, also hoping to get tickets for the Boca Juniors game (public sale on Wednesday I believe). Will we coordinate ticket buying?

Boca! Of course! I forgot about that! Um so we're actually quite keen to go to that one instead... probably can't make both and this one suits us much better (Mrs won't need to get time off work) plus there are a few hotels in Welly doing "Phoenix vs Boca specials" which makes it's pretty good value. Tickets on sale Wednesday you say, shouldn't have too much trouble getting tickets if we get in early ?

  6. Really hope they don't use that as a template with that stupid centurian shoulder.

However, remove the shoulder and pick, ghana away, cameroon away, ivory coast home from this:

    link here

i'd love it if they turned out in this

but of all the puma tops i've seen, i'd say this with red n yellow hoops and a black panel collar, or this, but with a smaller sponsor space would be the best template

Yea centurion shoulder thing is ugly, but I also think that single colour v-neck type thingy they've got going in those other Puma shirts (yea like those ones, tottenham, lazio etc) ruins those shirts. The current one is fine! Make the hoops go right the way around and it'd be perfect!

  7. Speaking of which, during the Nigeria v Greece match, a nigerian player was (admittedly correctly) sent-off after hitting out with his foot at a greek player on the touchline. Now, this wasn't what annoyed me, but what happened next did, and no commentator or pundit picked up on it or even seemed to notice it! The "victim" who has been brushed on the leg by the Nigerian paused for a split-second, noticed the referee approach and then collapsed on to the floor holding his face and rolling around as if he had been brutally assaulted. He should have walked aswell in my opinion!

Case and point. The Guatemalan ref in the NZ v Italy game was crap too. Their goal came from a dive that Michael Phelps would be proud of. Sure, there was a little bit of a shirt tug in there, but when he decided to fall over there was nobody touching him.

I liked this quote from the Sydney Morning Herald reporter Dan Silkstone - "Italian football can defy the laws of physics; only here does a small pull backwards on the shirt send a grown man tumbling forwards."

  8. Worse than crap refs (like the Spanish and Malian blokes mentioned) are divers. Plenty of fouls and cards are given when the player claiming to be fouled just falls over. The job is hard enough for referees without players trying to cheat them into giving a free kick. I don't know how the Scots feel about it but here in NZ, in particular at club level, anyone who takes a dive, or even milks a tackle that may have even been a foul, is considered a f**king twat.

Nearly all teams at this world cup have at least a couple of these cheating ********. That's what ruins the beautiful game more than crap referees. Sadly, it is also one of the reasons rugby is big in NZ (not as big as you'd be led to believe though - there are more registered footballers than rugby players here) as any act such as diving or something even vaguely comparable in any other sport is considered bad sportsmanship and perpetrators are not welcome on most teams. It's a part of our sporting culture that I agree with. Just get back up straight away and go for the ball! You might get it and score if the ref doesn't call it!

Crap referees and unsportsmanlike behaviour are both unfortunate and unavoidable.

  9. To all of us in NZ, we talked about this earlier in the year but now that I see the schedule is out I thought I'd put the word out. First home game at Westpac is Friday the 13th (hmm) August. I'm definitely keen so if we can all make it there we must meet up before the game for that sherry, or whatever you're into B)

    Who's in?

  10. I got New Zealand too. Be lucky if they score a goal!

Hey come on that's a bit harsh! A bit of a cliche too - we're not actually a crap team you know! Beat the Serbs a few days back, narrow loss to Aussie (2-1) too. Also had a decent showing against Italy last year, leading for most of the game only to lose 4-3 in the end. They'll score a goal alright, and will probably pick up a win or at least a draw, maybe two.

  11. Guess what will happen now? -a- Creepy dishonest Labour activists & daft voters will not accept that Brown blew billions of pounds due to financial incompetence (you're supposed to save some money when in surplus) -b- blame the tories for all the cuts that are coming. I'll bet they will accept zero responsibility for what's coming. Typical labour, inherit a healthy economy, ruin it, and leave the wreckage for someone else to clean up.

Spot on. It seems to be a common theme around the world that. Happened here in NZ too - Labour govt here ruined our economy after three terms in a row (gaining re-election twice on empty promises and rhetoric) but thankfully we saw the light and kicked them out at the last election. Things are MUCH better two years after their removal. Lets just hope lessons are learned - don't vote left unless you're happy to have an ever increasing government presence in your life.

  12. Unemployment now up to 2.5 million!

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8634241.stm

Is this supposed to be in the much vaunted 'National Interest'?

Absolutely disgraceful so-called government thus far. At this rate unemployment will have risen to over 3 million by the weekend. The Lib Dems, to be fair, must take their share of the blame too.

Haha that made me laugh a little. I'm not sure I even know what you're on about really - if the situation really is that bad then it's obviously due to the previous govt who held power for years, not the new one that has been in only days. Not to mention that that link is to an article written a few weeks ago.

I take quite an interest in UK politics and was happy to see Mr Brown and his cronies ousted. Perhaps this new govt will put a stop to the excessive spending of taxpayers' money, maybe even enough to lower taxes. It happens all over the world - a left-wing govt gets in and spends as much of the peoples' money as it can, only to end up making a mess of things. Which is when the people turn to a right-wing party to clean up the mess. It happened in NZ recently, and has happened just now there in the UK.

  13. One of the reasons I became a Thistle man was because unlike the old firm fans, Jags fans seemed to love and follow their club, including going to Firhill on match day, whether the team was winning or not! The Jags fans I met in Glasgow seemed to be jovial and happy to support their team regardless of the results, or for that matter any possible issues with the stadium or atmosphere therein. On the other hand the gers and celts fans I met were often angry souls who slagged off their team if they performed poorly - even booing the team they claim to love (which I find disgusting).

None of the excuses I have read here for not fully supporting our club suffice in my opinion. If you make feeble excuses to stay away then things are only going to get worse. Get out there and support our team! If I lived in Glasgow I'd be at every game I could possibly make, even if we were at the bottom of division 3 and Firhill was falling to bits. I don't think there's any excuse for this treachery! B)
