Between Ross county 9th september and Hearts 19th November we won 11 points from 10 league games under the management of Alan Archibald.

Does anyone on here think it's likely that if we let Archie go we might replace him with a guy who has managed English Premiership and Championship clubs, worked as assistant manager and first team coach for Jose Mourinho, Ruud Gullit, Kenny Dalglish, Gianfranco Zola, been part of coaching and management teams who have won multiple English league titles and cups ... and hand him sufficient cash in this budget to sign a 30 year old free agent midfielder with well over 100 EPL appearances, former player of the year at his club, who was valued at over £5million at one point in his career, before suffering injury which has stunted his appearances for 2 years and was injured while his club was relegated from the premiership....
.. or is it more likely we might get someone of the Owen Coyle calibre, who in his last 4 managerial appointments has a win % ratio lower than our current gaffer's and who since joining Ross county in september has won 3 matches in 10, lost 5 and drawn 2, seeing the club fall from 10th to 11th place in the league.

I thought that stewards were in place partly to protect members of the public not to attack them. Even if they were allowed to manhandle them (they aren't) you'd have thought a prior warning would be commonplace.
In mitigation, they could argue they were protecting members of the public who had paid for a seat to watch the football from having their view obscured and their free movement about the stadium hindered. While verbal negotiation should have been exhausted and then the matter left to police, there was the possibility other fans may have joined the small gathering and created a larger obstruction.

However, after all that previous effort from the young lad, this was lazy in comparison. He was lauded for liaising with the Ibrox and Firhill staff to agree and coordinate a fine display of support for his team... This time he just took it upon himself to have a dig at the opposition, from an area you might be moved on from for quietly standing, suppin a bovril while waiting on your pal coming back from the pi55er.
I'll stay out the rights and wrongs re the political side of things. If you're making a general point then apologies. However re this specific incident you're incorrect. There were no mitigating circumstances to compensate for what was simply an act of petty thuggery, an action outside the remit of any steward, badged or otherwise.
JJ, are you completely ignoring my previous post? You're either trying to involve logic (albeit your logic) into what should have happened, but most certainly didn't, or you're doubting the veracity of my previous post.
The mitigation would surely be that it is within the stewards' remit to attempt to prevent spectators from standing, loitering or otherwise, from the access passageways and stairways.

CGMB, you're an intelligent guy, I'm sure you know that I know you know I wasn't saying you were condoning Orcdom. Far from it.
I will 'cede to you that perhaps the flying of the Yes Saltire or Catalan's indie flag is not particularly cool or imaginative (or even appropriate) at a Thistle game, but it's certainly not "pathetic" and I'm certainly not going to condemn any of our supporters for doing so, ESPECIALLY in that heaving cesspit of a place. And those boys certainly didn't deserve to be treated in the way they were.
We'll need to agree to disagree on what's acceptable and what's not in the good fight.

I take humbrage with your calling our supporters on Saturday pathetic.
Just to quote you one random example, I'll tell YOU what's pathetic.
A red hand of Ulster banner (what's that got to do with Scotland?) hung at Ibrox on Saturday with the (cleverly written) slogan "Here lies a soldier".
You'd have to be zipped up at the back to believe that's a WWI "tribute".

The logic in your comparison is Rangers fans are getting away with murder therefore we should be allowed to commit an assault. The banners were not a neutral, disinterested call for peace or denouncement of discrimination, sectarianism or anything else. They were promoting specific opposition groups to "them", which are not "us". They weren't in support of "us" they were intended to offend "them".
It is this reasoning which perpetuates grievances and escalates the tit for tat abuse. My enemy's enemy is my friend.

On a previous occasion - http://www.wearethis...202#entry215202 - and others, I have been responding to someone suggesting we should possibly attempt to align PTFC to a political cause and I was asserting balance.
The reason for my sarcastic tone here is, I again question who might be first to think it out of order. Would the parkheid stewards have to act so "outrageously", or would some jags fans be more likely to police themselves, on that occasion?
I have said previously the best wind up to sevco would possibly be a red black and yellow union flag bearing the legend "F**k the Rangers" on it. However, I also have stated before that I think national flags at club games is lazy and sycophantic, particularly when they don't even have your club's colours on them never mind club's name. Be proud of what we are, Partick Thistle, an independent mongrel nation, not a mere affiliate, foot-soldier battalion, of another. We belong to no other. F**k the SPFL and the SFA, shite ref's and stupid rules about all seater stadia have ****** us about for decades.

The flags were a wind-up, not an attempt to align PTFC to any political cause - Thistle fans in general are above that. It certainly worked, I thought it was pretty brave and impressive for 2 young people with 2 flags to incense about 20,000 people.

Still think there is case for us working on a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 formation as an interim default while we are missing Osman, Booth and Elliot. Set up to frustrate, contain and hit on the break. Feel our way into the game then use what we have off the bench to tailor our attack.
I appreciate the style Archie wants to instil, but it's proving hard to assert ourselves with so many out. "Rope-a-dope" does not mean abandoning your principles, rather just picking your moment to show your hand. Last three games we have been pretty dopey and on the ropes but not by design. It's arguable we showed more fight and determination yesterday, that we were able to assert ourselves better, but it's surely not debatable that we rode our luck a bit before delivering the sucker punches.
That said...
The game is 90mins.
The season is 38 games....
Archie's army is marching on,
Partick Thistle are for ever and ever.

We started each our league cup group games with 5 Thistle Weir players in the squad.
Nisbet made an appearance in each one. Started in perth in the next round, was key in setting up 2 of 3 goals, and is now a fairly regular first team sub.
Penrice played two full games. His loan to Livingston is a step up from East fife last year where he made 14 starts at left back and he now seams to be forcing his way to first team regular in midfield.
McCarthy is certainly breaking through. On the bench for (all?) games this season. Having made 3 starts last season, having (just?) turned 18, he must now be approaching double figures for first team appearances.
Neil Mclaughlin and Mark Lammont have both been farmed out to the fourth tier.
The Thistle Weir production line is in motion.
Despite going through the group unbeaten, beating St. Johnstone convincingly in the next round and eventually being put out in ET by rangers, there was a fair amount of concern expressed on here about how we played ( "honkin" ) and how our squad was looking ( "threadbare" ) early on in the season.
We have to remember where we've come from. I might be wrong here, but I think it was Ian McCall who first drew attention to how neglected our youth policy was, how short sighted we had become as a football club and attempted to do something about it by at least starting up and running 2 or 3 proper youth teams playing regularly. While other clubs might not have a comparable "thistleweir" set up, I wonder and doubt if they have let things slip as far as we had not so long ago.
When the phrase "starting from nothing" is being used in defence of ThistleWeir, while not only more or less accurate, I think it fair to say the the ultimate vision for the project is for it to be a step up from what may have been an acceptable youth program in years gone by. More than simply running teams or having close links to dedicated boys clubs, but to provide a professional and comprehensive program of physical, tactical and skills training with a pre-planned structure of progression. Not simply working with who turns up but attracting those who we'd like to work with, bringing in the standard of youth players to meet the level we want them to compete at as well as developing those who have been with us since boys.
The training facility is essential. Regardless of our former financial woes, It is a disgrace that we like too many in "Pro" football clubs in Scotland have operated for over a century with no dedicated training filed or footballing hub to work on their game, away from where they present the show.
While the Weirs cash is fortunate and much appreciated gift, I suggest it has been far from squandered by those who have taken up the challenge set down by the initial cash injection. Gerry Britton has left a career in the law to dedicate himself to the dream. He and others around him have ticked all the boxes to suggest they are worth further backing. They have made the grade in terms of having Thistle weir recognised as fit to to compete at the highest level available in Scotland.
While financial returns are yet to fully bud and the business model may need more work and attention, most "start ups" involve a large degree of risk and take time over and above effort and organisation to establish themselves as reliable, regular sources of steady income. The project has earned respect and it's management credibly deserve further investment.
The two significant grants from the Weirs suggest they might share my optimism and confidence. I agree that this year is once more crucial to the project's progression. Success breeds success no matter how small, and we are in a fortunate position that survival in the top flight means we have an opportunity, thanks to the Weirs, to capitalise on that perhaps more than others. Though not certain yet, another top flight season and bricks going up at the training ground and I would be, I'm reasonably confident that it is not ultimately crucial to the survival of the youth program.
I think we are committed, credibly organised and will deliver a decent "academy" that will start to build a well regarded reputation across, not just Scotland, but the whole UK and potentially peak the interest of some on the continent with what we can produce.

Are we playing Storey out of position? I certainly didn't think we signed him to play in place of Doolan or just as a back up. I can't see many advocating two up as a default formation (we're struggling enough in midfield as it is). Imo we signed Storey to compensate, nay improve on, the loss of Azeez. Storey is strong and has genuine pace. Given these attributes if the guy can't cut in from the right or left and offer a goal scoring threat and/or assists to Doolan it says more about him than the position he's being played.
Defence aside as I see it we've four new additions to the side, Spittal, Storey, Sammon and Banzo. Spittal is the only one of that quartet that I can say has knocked it off so far. Banzo for obvious reasons hasn't been up to speed and, tho' I'm guessing, I reckon Sammon has neither surpassed or fallen short of expectations. Storey has simply not lived up to expectations to date.
eta playing Spittal means we really have to compensate somewhere for his lack of pace and that puts pressure on the manager to play Storey.
If I were king, right now I'd definitely be toying with 4-4-2/4-4-1-1, Doolan, Sammon and 9 others. I thought Sammon was magnificent leading the charge alone against the soothside-tasseled-orange-nipple-ticklers. Adding Dools, with about half an hour left, got us the goal we needed.
Midfield would require a dose of discipline and training ground rehearsal, a change of mentality for some of our more attacking players maybe. But surely most players will still be familiar with 4 across the middle and a flat back 4.

Realistically we are missing one right back, one left back and a CM from starting lineup.
Realistically you have listed 7 players that have started for us in the past year and come to a conclusion referring to only 3.
Osman is both our club captain and key defensive midfielder. It is arguable that the preferred replacement for his absence might be Bannigan, and Fraser when he was fit (though he has not played for over a year) also offered some competition for the place.
Booth is our only specified dedicated left back. It is arguable that Archie should have sought proper cover for him in the pre-season. However, McGinn was a fairly late addition to the squad (late august), and may well have been chosen after the search for a suitable left back was exhausted. Booth was injured in the first game after McGinn signed and Elliot, who had played left back capably in the previous season, provided decent cover over for almost 4 full games (only being beaten in extra time by rangers) until he too was injured.
We are missing two key players at left back and three players who have provided decent contributions from the centre of midfield.
Furthermore, Lawless has been, I would guess, in our top 3/4 goal scorers and "assist" charts since promotion. To brush over his absence is bizarre.

regarding Dumbaya and Fraser they have barely played in over 2 years there’s obviously something far more serious with their injuries and not sure they could be seen as integral parts of the squad for well over a year now
Dumbaya came back into the matchday squad at the end of January this year and remained on the team sheet until mid April.
He played a total of 7 full games, was an unused sub 3 times and was subbed once.
He played on both the right and left of a back 4 and 3/5 formation and the team lost games only to Aberdeen and Rangers during that time.
His run in the team coincided almost directly with the team's 8 game unbeaten run which lifted us from 10th in the league to 6th and kept us there till the split.
Last season we won a total of 10 games. Mustapha started in 4 of them.
It might also be noted that MD played every minute of our 6 game unbeaten run with a 4 game winning streak the previous season which lifted us from 11th to 5th just before Christmas.
I don't know the severity of his injury. However as far as I am aware he has been kept out with 3 different, specific problems while with us. That said, he does seem to have a recurring weakness in one of his knees.
I've posted about this before, and it's been hinted their are other issues with his return. He's older now and injuries may well have worn him down, however I have no evidence to confirm that. Therefore I hope he might still return and once more prove himself to be a very useful asset to the the squad.
I'm not attempting to make out he is our potential saviour, and it may well be my hope for his return is forlorn if the truth is his injuries are overwhelming. However, the stats show that he has been an integral part of our team in their most successful periods over the last two seasons.
