  1. Last season finishing in the Top 6 was incredible, especially given what I had seen. If it wasn't for the singing and the beer it would have been even more traumatic. As for narrow wins for and against, its our inability to kill teams off that repeatedly cost us. That's my point relating to the amount of goals we score.

Whatever way you look at it and I look at it, we need to be doing a lot better over the next few games

    No arguments there

    "argue"? ...

I'd debate over last year's "...Top 6 incredible,,," and "...a lot better....". :smartass:

In our 8 game unbeaten run at the end of last year, we faced only 2 of the top six sides before the split. We were unbeaten against 5 of the bottom 6 all season. The lottery of fixture list made that run stand out.

We missed out on top six in the previous year by one goal.

Sure we need to up our game and injuries mean it's surely going to be tougher for us. However...

    • Celtic - we lost a fairly early goal, they were dominant, but we held out and had a late penalty shout.
    • Aberdeen - we came from behind twice and so did they. Their first comeback assisted by a daft penalty.
    • We dropped 2 points in dingwall to a late, soft pen.
    • If we could repeat our result against rangers that'd be 3 points we never had last year.

... This time last year we were alone at bottom on the same points. We rose to 7th though october and were bottom again by Christmas. I absolutely agree we need a win and sooner the better, but a draw against killie will...

    • Not put us bottom of the league
    • retain an undefeated run against bottom 6 teams
    • be achieved with important players out injured that should return later in the year.

We need improvement. But we have not been a total disaster. Motherwell was the exception. While little positive can be taken from the last game, much can be learnt and we've got an extra week to work with that knowledge to prepare a better plan for our injury struck squad.

Heids up, chins high, chests oot troops! A few battles lost, but the war is far from done. Archies army marches on.

Killie put squirrels in their pies.

  2. The St Mirren game has been the only exception to the rule, it was quickly followed by Airdrie and Stranraer which wee for the most part utterly forgettable.

Its doesn't matter if we only lose by a goal to celtic or Aberdeen or anyone, its still a defeat.

We need to beat Killie, surely. As I said on Saturday though, if we don't, there will be a few of you pointing the finger at Billy Bowie for bringing in a new manager rather than our own misgivings.

    Exception to what rule?

It is relevant in relation to how we are competing in games. It is significant in relation to goal difference.

Last season Dundee and Ross county ended on the same points. Dundee got more money for having better goal difference. In 1992 we were promoted because we finished with better goal difference than Hamilton. While we might not be title contenders, with the split in the league it increases the prospects of goal difference being crucial.

We need to beat someone. Killie look like the best bet right now. Losing by the odd goal against Celtic, scoring 3 against aberdeen and holding rangers to a draw suggests it we might be worth a punt against anyone.

  3. Comparing it to last season to fob off is meaningless. What we are seeing is a pattern of poor and slow starts. We should be winning at least one game out of three against Ross County, St Johnstone and Motherwell in a passable season.

There is going to be a season where, having shown no bottle or urgency in the opening set of fixtures, we're not going to suddenly click and turn it around. It's perfectly legitimate and reasonable for fans to worry that this might be that time. The team is getting plagued by injuries at precisely the point in the season when everyone's conditioning is supposed to be optimal. We've conceded late goals or done something stupid against every team we've led against, and there is a losing mentality on the park that can't be swatted away on the basis we had one good result in the cup at McDiarmid Park and beat one out of two second tier diddies.

Those saying that we need to lower our expectations because we've only lost to teams ahead of us are missing the point. A lot of these teams are ahead of us in part because they took points off us.

We don't expect to be picking up lots of points against the top brass of the league, but Ross County and Motherwell aren't top brass. They're cack. And unless we get at least 3 points from one of Killie, Dundee and Hamilton, so are we.

We haven't had a season since promotion we have not suffered at least one defeat against county. So far, we are on track to improve on that.

We have taken a single point at Fir park since promotion. We have two fixtures to improve on that.

St. Johnstone have finished top 6 in every season since we got promoted. They are the top 6 side we have probably the best record against.

However, last season we took no points off rangers and got beat in our first game v. eventual top six finishers hearts. This year we have held both to draws... an improvement!

I appreciate we are desperate for a win, and that I'm making a bit of a "swings and roundabouts" excuse of an argument. However, the current table shows we have played the top 6 sides, drawn against 2 of the bottom 6 and have yet to play the other 3 poorest starters. There is a real concern over our mounting injury woes, and improvement on last season's conclusion seems distant, but results and performances thus far do not indicate we are unable to achieve a "passable season".

We finished top 6 last year. While not what we hope for, we can afford a couple of steps back this season. Given that a club like Hibs replaced ICT, our season ticket sales have not soared, and we are making a significant leap forward with the training facility, perhaps we should accept that after years of progression up the league tables, our ambition to climb requires some patience if it is to be sustainable. Consolidation both on and off the park must happen so that improving results are set in decent foundations. For now, perhaps "passable" remains "survival" in this league.

  4. We dont score enough goals, we concede too many goals and our build up is excruciating. Excitement has also been sparse. Its been this negative loop for 2/3 years!!!!

Calm yourself down. Why should my opinion invalidate my argument? Present your case to argue my point on excitement and amount of goals scored?? Last season I attended 11 league games and witnessed 1 win (2-0 Dundee 28th December), maybe you can then appreciate that what I have seen has been dismal. We haven't changed our style this season and its going to take a major upturn in fortune to reverse the results.

Last season we went on an 8 game unbeaten run and finished top 6 for the first time since promotion. In pre-season we made 8 new signings and announced plans for a state of the art new training facility.

This season, while results have been poor and we sit lowly in the table, not all performances can be labelled such.

We are one of only two teams to concede only a single goal to Celtic in the league, we got beat by the odd goal in 7 by Aberdeen, we held Rangers to a draw over 180 minutes of football by scoring 3 goals. This included playing with 3 centre forwards on the park in order to snatch a last minute goal to take them to extra time in the league cup. Defeated by the odd goal against St Johnstone in the league, we previously pumped them 3-0 away from home in the cup. Motherwell have a a very good home record so far. They have been beaten at fir park only by the odd goal against only aberdeen and rangers and have scored at least 2 goals in each of their other home fixtures to secure 4 victories conceding only once.

The current table shows we have played the top 6 sides, drawn against 2 of the bottom 6 and have yet to play the other 3 poorest starters.

We started the season playing what most would generally consider our favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. We switched to a 3/5 at the back formation which was working quite effectively for 3 games. Player suspension and injury has inevitably disrupted our possibilities and consistency. Double injuries at both Left back and in defensive midfield have made team formation and player selection peculiarly tricky.

ETA - We also put 5 past current championship toppers st. mirren, conceding nil.

  5. Our formation is not settled. While we have decent strength in depth but, we don't have perfect like-for-like cover. One injury can effect the formation we suit and therefore have a knock on effect on who plays in several positions. For example, Osman being out might mean we persist with a back 3/5 more often, with more attacking wing backs or revert to a more defensively minded back 4.

We call it "a back 3", but against the h*ns we shaped up more 5-1-3-1. Jam tarts it was looking more 3-4-1-2

Personally, I'd prefer the back 4 against most teams.

Taylor-Sinclair was probably our most effective attacking "wing-back" as opposed to dedicated defensive "Full back". In our first season up we persisted with a back 4 and while ATS continued to to his flying full back thing well, we were caught out by better players being able to exploit our attacking ambitions.

I think we have the midfield and attacking personnel now to really make a go of it playing 4-2-3-1, 4-1-3-2 or 4-2-2-2 and take more control of games further up the park and through the middle. But, I do concede 3 centre backs has been working well in the last 3 games and it might be the best way forward for now.

3,4, or 5 at the back affects this current Eliiot/Booth debate. Christie has only played on the left of a back 4 once this season and only a handful of times previously.

There's not much between Christie and Callum in terms of basic skills, commitment or speed. Christie has been terrific taking on the challenge of moving from an attacking to defensive player. His enthusiasm and determination whether on the left or right is commendable.

Booth's experience at the back gives him the edge when it comes to reading the game and getting the balance right between the attacking ambition of a wing back and defensive responsibility of a full back.

Christie is decent defensively and confident pushing forward. He's not really had the chance to refine his game for a specific position. His energy and determination aren't always sufficient cover for lack of experience.

With a back 3/5, I'd say there's a real battle for the jersey. Back 4 and Booth would walk back in tomorrow. Booth ain't back tomorrow. Opportunity for Christie to gain that valuable experience.

  6. To be honest, it's the opposite for me. With Booth missing it's demonstrating just how good Elliott is. I prefer him over booth at left back.

I agree Christie's showing what an asset and how versatile he is.

However, he's only been on the left in the last 3 games. At county we played a back 4 but for the old firm soothside snobs and Jam tarts we started with 3 centre halfs.

He's got a chance to make it a good problem for the gaffer. Let's see how we shape up in the next 4 games.

Definitely puts the pressure on Booth.... and others...

3 at the back and Christie probably shades it on a returning from injury Booth. However, he's maybe better than both McGinn and Nitriansky on the right in that formation.

The back 3 is strong but I'd prefer to see us playing a back 4 against most teams. Right now, as good as Elliot has been, I'd still be more confident with a fit Booth in a back 4 and from what I've seen probably McGinn on the right.

Asides from being handed the gloves, I think the defensive midfield is about the only place Elliot hasn't been given a run out. Might be worth a wee experiment if Abdul is out for months... ... seriously... why not? He's absolutely earned a place in the team... just figuring out how to build it around him is the hard part!

    Rave on Christie Elliot!!!

  7. Theres more chance of having Dembele play for us that Dumbuya. Why are we holding ot for him to return from injury? He is a chronic sick note

Its all ifs and buts with Muzzy and that isn't what we need. I must be reading your post wrong about being hard to sell as I don't know where that was said. Besides, who would buy a race horse with 3 legs?

Ifs buts and hard luck. No we don't need that, but a fit Muzzy would be useful.

He'd a good first season with us. Ankle and knee niggles but we must've got a decent 20 odd games out him and handed him a two year extension.

He did his achilles pre-season last year. Came back , won 4 lost 2 drew 2 of the games he played in. Then his knee went right out.

Free him halfway through a contract don't make sense. Wouldn't be free for us and unless he is a right off we could rue letting him go too early.

We've got plenty RB cover now, but McGinn didn't come in till end of august. The club ain't holding out for Muzzy. Seems to me they are holding out for decent affordable players and giving them a fair chance.

I'd love to see Muzzy back. Not saying it's likely or essential, just think he's worthy of hope.

I think Dumbuya's race is run. Freed at Christmas?

Maybe. But he came in last february and did a decent shift.

There might still be something there. Pace is a big part of his value. Injury might rob him of it, but at 30 he might have a couple of years left if he recovers well.

He had 3 seasons of 20+ games then 20+ in his first with us. Don't think he's necessarily "injury prone" just think it's maybe our donald duck.

Think it depends on his recovery and if we can get better cover at LB lined up for the window or next year. Elliot, Nitriansky and McGinn would be adequate if we had better cover for Booth.

If we knew more about his injury then could say yay or nay.

This. There's apparently more to this story than meets the eye.

McGinn's a very good replacement, so time for everyone to move on.

    Whaddaya know Barney?

  8. Theres more chance of having Dembele play for us that Dumbuya. Why are we holding ot for him to return from injury? He is a chronic sick note

Holding out for him? We signed 2 right backs in McGinn and Nitriansky and groomed Elliot for the role. Christie's made about 15 starts at RB now.

It's hard to sell an injured 30 year old player and who know's his contract details?

His deal takes him up to the end of this season. He maybe offers a little of the three alternatives in one package. If he can return by the turn of the year, keep his pace after recovery, he's worth keeping

If you mean "we" fans... Mustapha's a good player. I hope he returns.

  9. Frustrated again but remain very positive.

Aye, our squad is better than last year. Storey Sammon and Spittal > Pogba Amoo and Azeez. Be nice to have been able to hold onto Lindsay but he'd have proper competition in Devine, Keown and Turnbull.

Erskine, Sammon, Booth and Cerny would all have started that match if they had been available. We also have Osman out, Dumbaya and Fraser to come back hopefully at some point.

We dropped 2 points, losing a "goal" by a matter of inches. Really disappointing we doth protest it not enough. Perhaps a worrying resignation to losing late goals that our boys didn't make more of a fuss.

Look at the gif. Is it Turnbull hobbling back into the box as a hearts midfielder surges in and behind Callachan? We lost that "goal" effectively down to 10 men. We woz robbed, and should have been screaming at the ref about the crime.

I'd have liked to have seen us starting with Lawless, or bringing him on for Storey at half time. Miles didn't have a bad game, but i thought Stevie earned his place after the rangers game. If not, he's the type of player who could have come on at HT and kept the hustle on a Hearts side that are still to gel. Levein doesn't know how to play them yet.

Bring on the 'Well. With a fully fit squad, we'd tank them.

    For example :

    Cerny

    Dumbuya Devine Turnbull Booth

    Osman Barton

    Spittal Erskine Lawless

    Doolan

    Scully

    Keown

    Elliot

    McGinn

    Bannigan

    Edwards

    Storey

    Sammon

.... I'd be pretty confident against anyone with that, or a combination thereof... Nitriansky, Nisbet Fraser and McCarthy could all come in without too much grumbling....

As it is, heading to fir park, 50/50, hard to call. No shame in that.

    :fan:

    "goal"? ... yer f**kin pie!!! :sad1: ...

  10. Are Hearts considered another of those teams with much greater resources so against whom many people don't really expect us to win? If so, then doesn't it start to look like there are only one or two teams in the league that we can realistically compete against?

    Semantics.

I don't expect us to beat anyone in the league. Maybe after a few months and we've seen how all the terms are performing you could start saying we are probable favourites or not in some games. I'd baulk at pointing the finger and scoffing at the chumps just yet.

However, I firmly believe we can realistically beat anyone on the league, green old firm included, despite our prudent budget.

We were one of only three teams to take points off the Glasgow east end Hibernian brotherhood last year and so far this year they've put 4 past Hearts, County and Accies while their famous "way" only got them a single goal against us.

We showed in the last two games we're capable against the sticky fingered blue bhoys, lost to a late goal against the Sheep tamperin riggers, and stomped on St, perth in the cup before they bored their way to victory in the league.

It's not the best start again. Results are all important, and they ain't good enough yet. But we are competing, punching above our weight.

It's a 38 round bout, we're down on points but taken our blows reasonably well. Sitting in the corner, our cuts man gotta keep us tidy but he ain't too busy yet, we're hardly marked really. We know what we've got to do, throwin in the towel ain't an option. Maybe we're not title fighters but we're more than just sparring partners. We can hurt you ... and we will.

  11. Frustrated but very positive.

Fair play to Archie for going for it, but I didn't think the late goal momentum was there. We were pushing at the end of regular time, doing well and giving them problems. They were getting a bit sloppy but they didn't look out of it. It was mixed emotions for me when we had 5 players on the halfway line kicking off the extra time. Pride and trepidation. Mon eh ******' Theeeeesell!!!! ... but for fugs ache keep the heid.

Thought at the time he should have brought Bannigan on for the start of ET. Stevie had a decent game, but that was his first full 90 for ages and, not gubbed, but looked like he'd run his race.

I'd have thought about pulling Barton back and reforming the back 3 too. Possibly trying Nitriansky for Elliot. Christie was terrific and was still busting a gut for us, but his efforts were starting to show. His concentration was slipping and he was, in fairness to him ambitiously and positively, wandering and leaving us a bit exposed. Edwards still had it in him to push forward and with a fresh pair of legs in Banningan it would possibly have been enough in a tired midfield on both sides. Their subs were up front and at the back.

Far from thinking we should try and hold out for pens. With the three strikers on we always had a shout playing the long ball. Doolans goal showed what a predator he can be in a clustered box if it breaks to him. Thought Sammon was magnificent tonight, Sammon & Doolan shows real promise and Nisbet looked a bit out his depth but keen, confident and able.

They were there for the taking, but didn't look overly rattled. We had to get a grip, settle a bit. Got the feeling we rushed into ET, excited and a bit naive. Plenty can happen in half an hour. Maybe Archie forgot about the the Extra time extra sub allowance and Herrera certainly had an impact for them and us.

Anyhoo, doff my cap to the gaffer. We gave a good account of ourselves and an improvement in the head to head with the 'orribile 'uns after 4 straight league defeats last year. Still a few mistakes that could on another day have been punished and left us looking weak. But, We've shown we are a threat, have credible attacking options, strong decent depth in midfield and not too shabby at the back. We know we have more to give if injuries and suspensions are avoided.

Heids up. Nae shame. Nae fear. We're ****** Thistle, well win when we want. Bring on the Jambos.

  12. Strange picture!

Is that Gregor Stevens on the left? Joe Carson on the right

It looks like Alan Logan, Jamie Doyle, Donnie McKinnon and John Workman at the front, but tracksuit doesn't fit in with the era of some of them

I'd go with Joe Carson, the other 'tache sporter is John Donnelly. Din't play many games but, on his day, arguably our most creative player in the mid 80's. Maybe not the most glamorous boast, but one of my earliest Thistle heroes.

  13. Be fair on Maxy. He's quoted but the questions he was asked are not.

His quotes are fairly standard issue for any club. He implies the club are ambitious to push for the best possible results but more importantly emphasises "there is no way that we are being complacent."

I would suggest and hope that means the club are making contingency plans and applying some thought to unwanted scenarios. Surely a good thing.

I still firmly believe Archie is the "best fit" manager the club has had since McParland (yes, better than Lambie... start a new thread if you want :) ). Though better technical, more experienced C.V.s might be tendered for the job, I believe it would be a struggle to find a replacement who would have a better feel or understanding of the nature, finance and mechanics of the operation at Firhill or one who would be prepared to accept or be familiar with the adjustments which would be forced on them in the worst case scenario of relegation.

Before taking the gamble of trying to improve on Archie, it would be prudent of the the club to consider with some austere self critique whether the improved support from the board to the manager has been sufficiently keeping up to speed with the unquestionably improving standard of opposition in the SPL. The return of an apparently reconstituted Hibs in exchange for ICT, for example, perhaps raises the bar just that little bit higher than we are currently jumping.

On the other hand, while I very much doubt it, it is not beyond thought that Archie may feel, despite improving circumstances at the club, he has taken it as far as he can in this league, and resign. He has had alternate offers and while perhaps none on the table at present, may decide to walk before he falls. Again, in fairness to Maxy, on this point he does give some credit of responsibility to the gaffer, "I’m also not saying that we are sitting here as a board thinking we’ll just give it as long as it takes to turn around. The manager doesn’t want that either."

Such quotes will be used by some as a "red line" statement of intent to push the club into a corner and hold them to account in a crisis . However, as a fan, I'm willing to give some benefit of doubt, allow for some wriggle room and defend them.

Nobody's bigger than the club and all that. But for now we are very proudly, confidently and defiantly - ARCHIBALD'S RED AND YELLOW ARMY!!!

  14. Don't get to excited people

Sammon stats since leaving Killie are as follows,

26 goals in 228 league and cup matches

By my reckoning if he plays in all games we'll be lucky to witness 5 goals.

Think I'd rather have taken my chances with an unproven English League 2 striker than a proven non goal scorer. Oh well.

Storey on the other hand has at least got a bit more potential I suppose.

Too brief. Shite reckoning. Bit harsh.

Sammon left Killie during the January transfer window mid-season '10-'11, after scoring 15 goals in 23 games in the SPL, to play for Wigan in the EPL. He made only 9 starts in 32 appearances for the Latics and scored only 1 top flight in englandshire goal.

In the summer of 2012 Derby paid over £1million to try him out in Championship :

    • Season 1 - 8 goals in 41 starts.
    • Season 2 - 2 goals mostly used off the bench.
    • Season 3 - loaned out to other Championship clubs, Ipswich and Rotherham.
    • season 4 - loaned out to League 1 Sheffield Utd. - 5 goals, 15 starts, 27 appearances.

Free transfer from Derby to Hearts to start season 16/17, makes about 8 starts for Hearts scoring once before being loaned out, he scored 5 goals (+1 penalty) in 15 SPL games for Killie at the end of last season.

Not jizzin masel over the big man... But ... Maybe we've got him just at the right time.

    :fan:

  15. You've got to to give credit to Dundee for making a game of it.

They are a good group of professionals and in fairness their gaffer has them well organised.

They gave it a real go and, to be honest, probably just ran out of steam towards the end.

They made it tough for Accies and never gave up, fair play to them, it was no walkover.

100% respect for them as a club.

It's never easy but, they'll get over this, eventually.

There is no doubt in my mind that they'll be back fighting next season, providing strong competition against the likes of Brechin, Dumbarton and Livingston ...

    But...

... At the end of the day, Scottish Football needs it's big clubs playing in its top division.

For a club like Hamilton Academical to be relegated could have caused a footballing armageddon in terms of the knock on effect to other teams.

When you're talking about football club's, there's football clubs and there are some club's that are more than football clubs and I think that wee bit of extra something special just shone through on the day.

Accies have had a tough year, both on and off the park, but they are a class act and it would have been a travesty for them to go down.

I think it was the right result, when all's said and done.

  17. At least their European Cup and Invincible successes reinforce the truth that great achievements come in 50 year cycles. Roll on 2021.

...For we've made a promise. That we shall fulfill....!

  18.

    Nothing is ever Jackie's fault.

Fair enough stand up for Scottish football and he has a right to defend himself, but, his arguments are full of contradictions, obtuse allegations and angling for personal credit.

Celtic got a draw at the Etihad with a goal from Patrick Roberts, on loan from Man City. What wages is Roberts on and which Scot's youngsters are being kept out the team by his presence?

Andrew Robertson was released by Celtic age 15 allegedly for being "too wee" and Jackie more or less stole him from Queens Park and punted him on for a huge profit after one season to an EPL club.

Jackie signed Christie Elliot as a centre forward and stuck him out on loan to the Wee Rovers after a year and a half. It was Archie who spotted his attributes and coached him into a decent player.

He left us because he overrated the "infrastructure" at DU and belittled our club's ability to compete. It's a projection of his own attitude to say English football does the same in their opinion of Scottish players.

Jackie's got talent and proved it with us and to some extent with DU. He could still be a decent manager, but he needs to purge himself of his arrogant, old firm mindset, accept he's not in the "big time" and has no entitlement to it. At celtic everything was laid on a plate for him, at york city he's gonna have to go to the shops, set the table, prepare his own meal and muck in with the washing up ....

"Chief Executive" ... in the 6th tier of English football... because his pal owns the club... which he led to relegation... yeah Jackie sounds good, but do york city really need a "chief executive"?

I was gutted when he left too. Didn't like the way he did it, but recognised the loss. But, thank f*ck we got rid of the whining, prima donna, snobby TART!!! ... and had the good fortune to have a decent, well grounded, unassuming, grafter, grateful for the opportunity and willing to accept the conditions and face challenge to take us forward.

  19. They cost me £5.04 each. Might get a discount for ordering 500. So, outlay about £2500. Potential profit £2500. Need to sell 250 to get the outlay back.

I might have gone for another hundred a while ago but the fact that it actually took six weeks to sell the last batch put me off.

Tbh Lindau I'm a bit tired and could do with a holiday. Fortunately, I'm leaving in 11 hours. Viva Cuba! :D

If you return refreshed and inspired, or full of rum and confidently puffin on a big stoagie, and ready to do another batch.... Maybe the second edition could have the colours inverted.... ... Y'know like red background, with " KR1S D00LAN"... ... ... Then, 1st edition would retain it's "limited" appeal... provenance and future value!

  20. If the club had a you tube channel set up when Kingsley hit the scene there may have been some easy cash in it.... but it ain't all about direct cash income.

While I'm pretty sure most likely customers are willing to take a punt on it to find out, Youtube could be a decent place to showcase the Jagzone content, quality and value with teaser montages and edits that might entice a few lone, tight-wad :thumbsup2: nomads to a purchase subscription.

The club have a facebook page & Twitter, Youtube could be used as another social media tool for publicity. Even once a month, short, summary, video posts of random/out of date Jagzone content would add to the clubs online presence and display, life, activity and progress at the club to the outside world.
