Personally I would have Stephen O’Donnell back in a heart beat. I know he’s 31 now but he is a regular starter in the premier league and still looks in great shape. I believe he’s out of contract in the summer and would be a realistic target as someone who is still will liked at the club. I understand the age aspect but I see no reason why he couldn’t give us a good few years in the championship if he’s still performing at premier league level. Also a threat going forward to try and fill the gap McMillan will leave.

Also added factor he will likely be a mate of Doolans as a former team mate for many years.

If and when we lose McMillan, which we will at some point, I’d like to see us try for Carson at ICT. I’ve never seen him play less than 8 out of 10 for them.

  3. Being skint we were always going to have to use the loan market well and you would have to say the 3 we have brought in on loan so far all look very good acquisitions on paper at least. The 2 loan signings today for me are very positive ones. Doolan proving he is no mug in the window either so far with some great extensions and (hopefully) some very decent new signings. I think one more centre back, a utility defender who can play left back or defensive midfield. A lee hodson type if you will and a winger to cover lawless and fitzy. That should be us just about good to go.

From what I have seen in the last 2 weeks, I would agree that Stanway needs another spell on loan but Lyon looks better than Williamson as a Turner replacement.

Agreed here, I think stanway has a lot of potential but personally think his performances in the league cup games were slightly overrated by a lot of fans. I thought personally against Falkirk and united he looked a little bit out of his depths at times in all honesty. Lyon on the other hand I think has serious talent. He finds brilliant pockets is space and is a very positive and creative footballer from what I’ve seen so far. Can chip in with a goal and assist by the looks of it. I would like to see him given a good chance this season to become hopefully our next best asset since fitzy first time around. A loan for stanway for another year might be best should squad size allow. Everyone is mentioning Mackenzie as cover at full back and wide which I think is unfortunate for him slightly, I think his best position is in midfield and I think given the choice himself he would likely ideally feature in a more out and out midfield role, oppose to a winger or full back. Such is the circumstances of this season upcoming though that looks to be his role and I just hope it won’t stop his progression somewhat. He’s is a capable full back regardless due to his attitude. Finally, would also agree re Alston signing in some above posts. This 100% says to me Robinson is going to be out for a while and this is a cover signing knowing he’s going to be crocked for the opening weeks/months of the season.

  5. Great results for us tonight, as mentioned above though makes the draws at home to accies and particularly cove more frustrating. If we’d have won one of or both of those fixtures as we should have with the amount of chances we created, we could have opened up a small gap already. If we had done so we could have looked at Fridays game in Inverness as a fixture where you would accept a point or could afford a slip up. It’s important we start winning more or less all of our home games against the bottom 5 sides to ensure we have the breathing space to draw or lose here and there in the more difficult away fixtures. I’m still very happy with the start we’ve made to the season but need to make sure that 5-1 thrashing becomes a habit at firhill.

  6. I struggle to see how IMC can ever logically bring smith back in the team when you consider the players we have available in the forward areas. He is nowhere near good enough and offers far less than fitzy, mullin or even Weston and that’s not even including the starting wide players from last week. Again this is a game we need to be winning if we are serious about a promotion challenge imo but I said this before accies as well, so I certainly won’t be expecting a repeat of last week.

Love to see Tiffoney back starting games but that'll largely depend on his overall fitness, and to a lesser extent how much teamwork he's done in practice. He's returning to play with a handful of new teammates and McCall may well favour his previous attacking line up, sans Tiff, to gel first. Plus, obviously if one centreback returns then McCall has already got a decision to make re who drops out further up the park. If Tiffoney starts then two players will have to be benched from a last week's successful starters. With that in mind I'd expect Tiff and Turner to be subs.

We went thru last season with McCall unaware what his strongest line up was. That's still the problem today but by and large that's now a good problem. I reckon McCall will "go canny" and start Banzo, Doc and McKinnon (three men to do the job of two). Fine perhaps for a tough away game but far less so when we're at home. That said there's a case for erring on the cautious side early in the season. Don't doubt McKinnon can/will get forward but I'd like to see Bannigan do likewise, play further up the park.

One other thing, and a niggling worry, I hope the grass is cut low and playing fast & true. Not being at Dens makes it harder to comment but I'm assuming the surface up there was excellent.  We certainly responded well.

I would personally like to see us go for it and try blow accies away. With doch sitting deeper and McKinnon/Turner playing more attacking from box to box. If we could get a centre back fit for this, move McMillan back out to right back. I think with him and Milne overlapping lawless and fitzy with the creativity of turner/ McKinnon we should be able to blow accies away while they are still a bit short. With Weston, dowds, mullin and tiff all to come on if we can’t break them down. We should really be winning this game if we’re serious about a title challenge and hopefully convincingly at that. So with all that said as previously mentioned I’m predicting a 0-0.

    How so?

You don’t think the additions of Mullen, dowds, lawless, fitzy and Weston plus 2 attacking full backs won’t be more attacking and score more goals than tiff did alone last year? With foster and McKenna at full back and literally no depth up front or a single natural wide right sided player. I think it’s fair to say we will be more attacking and won’t rely on tiff so much.

Fair to say we have the players to score plenty. Whether the style can be changed to create the chances for them is another question. We are not noted as a side that creates chances over the last few seasons.

Hoping Turner playing in his proper position as an attacking midfielder and McKinnon can maybe add a bit more spark to create through the middle with some balls into forwards feet and in behind. Something we didn’t do at all last season was ever cut teams open. I wouldn’t even be opposed to playing Lawless in turners role with fitzy and tiff wide. He has great vision and can thread a pass.I’m sure he would be a good option in there if we are playing a team who are sitting in deep at firhill that we are trying to break down.

I have the feeling that Fitzpatrick and Lawless could do some serious damage to other teams this season.

    And once Tiffoney is back.......

Shades of McQuade, Lawrie and Gibson?

A fully fit Tiffoney and milne down the same side will be hard for any side in our league to stop. The best left(or right) hand side of any team in the league by miles. Tiff should be able to far more damage this season as well. Last year he was our only out ball so teams just comfortably doubled up on him as we had no over lap from full backs or any natural dangerous players on the right. Add in a terrible pitch surface it was near impossible for him to do much at times. With danger from full backs over lapping on both sides and 2/3 very decent dangerous right hand sided attackers now and a new surface into the bargain. He should be able to cause absolute havoc again now that teams can’t just double up on him. We might even see another level to his game if he can stay fit.

  11. I would probably say Dundee are now my most hated club in spfl outwith the ugly sisters and airdrie (Clyde are a bit to irrelevant now). So would love  to get one over them as we certainly owe them it. As for the starting lineup what would everyone like to see? I think sneddon deserves the nod for now and the back line picks itself basically if tunji and aero are out. I would personally like to see us go 4-4-2

                          Sneddon

    McMillan  Brownlie    holt    Milne

      Fitzy      turner       Doch    Lawless

                      Mullen    Graham

I do however get that it’s unlikely we’d change the formation that we’ve used in the league cup group stage and that Mullen perhaps isint match fit. I just always think players play well against former teams and I think he’d be well up for it. Realistically we will probably stick to 4-3-3 in which case I’d have the same gk and back line with banzo turner and doch. Leaving fitzy and lawless either side of graham in the front 3.

  12. Still no sign of this defender then before the weekend. Looking a bit light at the back just now. After having raved about how good this window has been I can’t help but feel that we are a bit top heavy looking at it. We only have 4 out and out midfielders and we mostly play with 3 in the middle. We only have 5 defenders now with it looking like aero gonna be out for a while. Fair to say we will score plenty but I also think we might concede a lot as well. Should be entertaining either way!

Guys on P and B reckon it's Lee Hodson of Kilmarnock.

It makes sense going off  McCalls description, it does seem like an odd move in his part though as he is likely only ever going to play in the absence of McMillan or Milne to suspension or injury. Seems like a bad move on his part to go back down to a league he just won on loan to be cover as back up. Guess he believes in his own ability to take a place which is good to have. If it even is him at all of course.

Is Stuart Bannigan so bad these days? I don’t know because I haven’t been to actual games and you need to do that it I think, to take in a particular player’s overall performance. TV shifts around a lot. Seems a bit sad, if true, considering his contribution over many years, that he seems to be being disparaged in some of the ways I’ve seen on here. Players lose their effectiveness after their ‘peak’ slowly or sometimes quickly. Is Stuart one of the former or latter? If it is indeed ‘game over’ for him with Thistle I hope that his ‘end’ is dealt with much more sensitively and lot more fairly than what happened to two of our other ‘greats’, ie Chris Erskine and Kris Doolan. The way they were treated by Caldwell and by definition (by the club) was an absolute disgrace. I felt an apology should have been made to them, (publicly) after GC thankfully departed PTFC. The Chair could have done it, because she seemed to associate herself particularly with Caldwell’s appointment. Putting them in the H of F was right but that would surely have happened anyway. Their ‘treatment’ prior to leaving Firhill was a separate issue and that shaming action was never publicly assuaged.

I think the pitch really killed banzo’s game in the second half of last season as he likes to spray the ball around. I don’t think he’s done by any means but I do believe that we don’t need him and docherty in the midfield together in most games as they are somewhat similar. I think when he plays well he can dictate the pace of a game but my gripe with Bannigan has always been his lack of wanting to play forward/ killer passes in recent years. I think he slows the game at times by going sideways, would love to see him try balls in behind and down the channels more often as he  definitely has the range of passing to do it.

Looking at this it would be good to get a defender on loan who can play full back in either side. Looking at it we are obviously going with the approach of using our centre backs as cover for full back. Holt on the left and muirhead for rb. Fingers crossed neither Milne or McMillan miss any significant amount of games as I think they will be pivotal to our play style this season.

Best thing about our Team so far is we really can play a variety of different formations quite comfortably with the players we have. Feel like last season we couldn’t change it up enough especially if we were behind or even level and going for win.

Agree completely. It is refreshing to see we have looked at our problem positions from last year and addresses the imbalanced parts the squad accordingly. Also nice to see how many players are actually ours, this must be the fewest loan players we’ve had in a season for quite some time.

I think we want one of them to be near 20 on their own and the others to be 10+.

That’s always the hope but I think I’m being realistic if we are sticking with 4-3-3. Only one will likely will be on the field at a time so I reckon it’s a realistic prediction but would obviously like to see one on 20+ or all on 10 or more but it’s probably unlikely. I saw we scored 46 goals last season but we had a lot of 1-0s and 0-0s. So I was working off the basis maybe 60ish would be a realistic target for a team challenging top spot. Maybe 30 from the strikers and 30 from the wingers, midfield and defenders.  All complete guess work of course but the squad for this season does look good on paper.

  18. I am delighted with the signing of Mullen personally. A few st mirren mates of mine speak very highly of him and never wanted him to leave. Top scorer in a rotten Dundee team last season as well I think is good business considering we also have graham and dowds. Not prolific as such but something different and with the way our squad is balanced this year I’m hoping we’ll be getting a lot more goals from midfield and out wide. So If graham, Mullen and dowds can notch up around 25ish between them we might be in with a good challenge.

I was disappointed because it was an opportunity to get the fans excited for the new season and maybe generate some interest in ST sales, which seem to be flagging. I guess we need to make allowances for the heat, but even at 2-0, we were one mistake away from it being nervy.

I take your points re excitement and season ticket sales, perhaps a point I didn’t consider. I just think games like that, when it is that easy it’s hard to inject intensity and if it wasn’t for poor finishing I think on the performance we could have won by quite a few. I suspect Saturday will provide a better challenge to see how exciting we can be at home with our new shiny pitch. :D

  20. Think some on here are being a bit negative. It was basically a friendly that game we must have had about 85% of the ball and their keeper made at least 3 brilliant saves off the top my head as well as a few other chances we could have easily won by 4 or 5 (although you could argue poor finishing I guess). We where so so comfortable that we didn’t really need to up a gear in all honesty. Job done, onto Montrose and a win secures top spot which is something we haven’t managed for a few years so have to be happy with that. I do agree however that the team that started today lacked pace and one of if not both fitzy and tiff when fit should both play on the wings in my opinion. Lastly, how good is it having full backs who over lap, get forward and deliver dangerous crosses? What a difference from last season it’s a genuine night and day scenario.

  21. I remember Elliot scoring on his debut as a striker against accies. I thought we’d found a gem but he was pretty useless as a striker on the whole. However, I do think he want on to have a good time with thistle and I really liked him as a full back bar that short spell where he fell apart as captain . Also giving me one of my favourite jags moments ever at Airdrie.

  22. 2 hours ago, jags on tour said:

                                            Lawless

                                            Graham

I suspect a 4-3-3 with one of the 3 cbs dropping out and cammy smith and lawless either side of/in and around graham. We all know McCall loves smith and he did score against rangers the other day so expect to see him starting somewhere on the back of that. That then leaves a back up keeper with whichever centre back misses out. Accompanied by lyons, owens, Stanway and a few other young boys to fill out the bench.

Last season we were fortunate to a degree to have Foster in so much as he was equally proficient playing left back as he was at right back. This season we've Muirhead providing right back cover and Holt available to cover left back. Akinola we're told can play as a right back. As Holt is a likely starter as a centreback we might just need (or want) further left sided cover. I don't think Hendrie would've been the answer. A possibility would be signing a player who could play equally well as an attacking wide right (a mirror of Tiffoney) and attack minded leftback. The lad that was on loan at Ayr perhaps? His name escapes me.

Think maybe you are thinking of the lad James Maxwell? Ayr fans seem to rate him but not sure what his best position is. Technically speaking he’d be a good fit for us if he can play midfield and cover at left back should Milne get injured. Can’t say I’ve seen enough of him to comment personally on how good he is though.
